One person dead after ‘extensive' listeriosis outbreak linked to recall of 141 ready meals

There are currently nine confirmed cases of listeriosis The Food Safety Authority (FSAI) of Ireland have said that there are nine cases of listeriosis confirmed as of Tuesday, July 22. The authority also confirmed that the HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been notified of and is investigating the death. The adult is confirmed to have had listeriosis. The FSAI has recalled 141 different ready-made meals and side dishes sold in leading supermarkets across Ireland following a confirmed "extensive outbreak" of listeriosis. The recalled products sold in Centra, Supervalu, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and various other stores are produced by Ballymaguire Foods. The majority are products connected to the individual supermarket retailer, but brands like the Happy Pear are also included. Products that are listed include chicken pasta bakes, turkey and ham dinners, spaghetti bolognese, beef stroganoff, chicken carbonara, beef lasagne, pilau rice and more. Supervalu's 'Signature Taste', 'Freshly Prepared' and 'Supervalu' ranges are impacted. Tesco's 'Irish Classics', 'Meals Made Easy' and 'Finest' ranges also have impacted products. Centra's ranges 'Centra', 'Freshly Prepared', 'Kitchen', 'Fuel'd Foods', 'Clean Cut', 'Happy Pear', and 'Food to Go' also have affected products. Aldi's 'Specially Selected' and 'Inspired Cuisine' contain affected products. A full list of the potentially contaminated products has been created by the Irish Independent in a searchable menu here: Notices have appeared in supermarkets including Supervalu. One notice urged consumers not to eat listed products. It also asked consumers to 'return it to your nearest store, where you will be issued a refund. "We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your co-operation,' it continued. The notice also included a helpline for Supervalu customers: 0214217619. Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. The incubation period is on average three weeks but can range between three and 70 days. More to follow.. Product recall notice in Raheny Supervalu yesterday News in 90 Seconds - July 23rd

FSAI recalls wide range of branded prepared dinners

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued a recall notice for a wide range of branded prepared dinners, across several different ingredients, branded ranges and retailers. The list of impacted products, which are supplied by Ballymaguire Foods, extends to well over 100 individual branded dinners and side dishes. It follows on from a recall notice issued last week for three products also supplied by Ballymaguire Foods. The prepared meals and side dishes listed are being recalled due to the possible presence of listeria monocytogenes. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale, the FSAI said. Most recalled products are sold individually by Tesco, Supervalu, Centra or Aldi. Separately, a significant minority are sold by both Supervalu and Centra, while a smaller minority are sold by various retailers. The impacted products come in the following ranges of Ballymaguire Food products: Irish Classics; Classic Kitchen; Meals Made Easy; Finest; Tesco; Signature Taste; Supervalu; Freshly Prepared; Centra; Kitchen; Fuel'd Foods; Clean Cut; Happy Pear; Food To Go; Specially Selected; Inspired Cuisine; From The Farm; Good Food Locally Sourced. The recalled products include many different meat and non-meat ingredients, and a small number of products are branded 'veggie', indicating no meat ingredients being included. Products of all pack sizes, all batches, and all best-before dates are implicated. For all products the country of origin is Ireland, according to the FSAI. Symptoms of listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average three weeks but can range between three and 70 days. Retailers are requested to remove the implicated products from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers or distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers. Caterers should not use the implicated products. Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated products. Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the implicated products and dispose of them.

This startup is bringing photos—and even video—to 911 calls

It's become commonplace to message someone a photo, text them an address, and switch to a video chat all in the middle of a phone call. But 911 systems, largely designed for the era of landlines, don't typically allow for those luxuries, even when callers are trying to communicate address information from a noisy environment or share a photo of an ongoing emergency. A startup called Prepared is working to change that, helping emergency call takers communicate more efficiently with people in situations where every second matters by enabling text, photo, and video communication and providing AI tools to transcribe and even translate conversations in real time. Cofounder and CEO Michael Chime says he had initially focused on providing an app to help schools during emergencies, having grown up near to a school shooting. During the COVID pandemic, when schools were closed, he communicated with school districts about additional features they might want, and several mentioned difficulty sharing detailed data with 911 centers during an emergency.

Fireproofing for the Future: New Wildfire-Resilient Neighborhood May be the New Paradigm

Los Angeles company's Southern California new-home community is built with IBHS's research-backed mitigation strategies to reduce the risk from wildfires L.A.-based KB Home, one of the largest homebuilders in the U.S., has unveiled the nation's first new-home community that meets the home- and neighborhood-level wildfire resilience standards developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), an independent nonprofit research organization dedicated to protecting homes and communities against natural disasters. Utilizing fire-resistant building materials, methods and features based on over a decade of IBHS wildfire research, KB Home's Dixon Trail community in Escondido is designed to IBHS's highest level of protection against direct flame contact, radiant heat and embers, which helps to meaningfully reduce the likelihood of wildfire spread. The Dixon Trail community will have 64 homes upon completion. Each home will be built to the 'Wildfire Prepared Home' plus standard and receive a designation certifying that it has met IBHS's most stringent requirements for homesitelevel fire mitigation. Dixon Trail will receive a provisional neighborhood-level designation based on its design, confirming that the community has implemented preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of initial ignitions from an approaching wildfire, protect against embers that could spark spot fires and slow fire spread if ignitions occur. Dixon Trail is the first applied use of the researched-based, community-level mitigation strategies of structure separation, fire pathway reduction and wildfire-resilient building materials under IBHS's new Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood standard. Once the neighborhood is completed and has passed an IBHS evaluation, a final Wildfire Prepared Neighborhood designation will be issued. 'In keeping with our tradition of innovation, we are pleased to offer today's buyers the ability to choose a wildfire-resilient home and community,' said Jeffrey Mezger, chairman and chief executive officer of KB Home. 'We are proud that our new Dixon Trail community, with its system of mitigation features, is the first in the nation to meet IBHS's wildfire resilience standards at the homesite level and at the neighborhood level.' Research shows that both homesite- and neighborhood- level strategies are key in preventing wildfires from becoming catastrophic. As a model of wildfire resiliency, Dixon Trail has incorporated research-backed mitigation actions into the design of its homesites, including the installation of Class A fire-rated roofs, noncombustible gutters, upgraded windows and doors, and ember- and flame-resistant vents as well as the creation of a five-foot noncombustible buffer around structures. At the neighborhood level, wildfire risk is reduced by separating almost all structures by more than 10 feet and decreasing potential fuels through the use of fire-resistant materials, like all-metal fence systems. 'With fire becoming an increasingly common threat in the West, it's crucial to reconsider how we construct communities in fire-prone regions,' said IBHS CEO Roy Wright. 'KB Home is at the forefront, implementing our research-driven wildfire mitigation strategies for both the parcel and neighborhood levels at Dixon Trail.' KB Home has a long-standing history of bringing innovation to homebuilding and achieving industry firsts. The company was founded in 1957 with the forward-thinking idea of building slab homes to make homeownership more affordable for first-time buyers. In 1976, KB Home introduced its first energy-efficient homes, setting the stage for future sustainability initiatives. Its first ENERGY STAR certified home was built in 2000, and in 2008, KB Home made a broad commitment to design all homes to be ENERGY STAR-certified. The company has continued to push boundaries, becoming the first national homebuilder to offer WaterSense labeled homes in 2010 and unveiling all-solar communities in 2011. More recently, in 2022, KB Home became the first national builder to adopt the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) highest water-efficiency standards in drought-prone regions and pioneered two all-electric, solar- and battery-powered microgrid communities. In 2024, the company accomplished a major milestone by building its 200,000th ENERGY STAR-certified home - more than any other builder in the country. KB Home's Dixon Trail community represents yet another milestone: the first IBHS-designated, wildfire-resilient neighborhood in the nation.
