Families received wrong remains of Air India crash victims: Lawyer

Relatives of a British victim killed in last month's Air India crash received a casket that contained mixed remains, a lawyer representing several families and UK media said on Wednesday. The family of a separate victim received the remains of another person, according to James Healy-Pratt, who is representing 20 British families who lost loved ones in the disaster. A total of 241 people on board the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner died when the plane crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad in western India on June 12. Some 169 Indian passengers and 52 British nationals were killed, making it one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of the number of British fatalities. Several people on the ground also died while only one passenger, British citizen Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived the crash. Firefighters carry a victim's body after the Air India flight 171 crashed in a residential area. File / AFP Healy-Pratt told the Press Association news agency that the return of victims' remains had been marred by serious errors, which had been identified following a probe by a British coroner. "In the first two caskets that were repatriated, in one of the caskets, there was co-mingling of DNA which did not relate to the deceased in that casket or the casket that accompanied it," he said. The lawyer added the coroner was then "able to determine that one particular loved one was not at all who the family thought they were." Miten Patel, whose mother Shobhana Patel died along with her husband in the disaster, told the BBC that "other remains" were found in her casket after her body was returned to Britain. Health workers shift the body of a victim, who died in the plane crash, to a cold storage at a hospital, in the aftermath of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash during take-off from an airport, in Ahmedabad, India, June 13, 2025. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi "People were tired and there was a lot of pressure. But there has to be a level of responsibility that you're sending the right bodies to the UK," he told the broadcaster. The Daily Mail newspaper first reported two cases in which the wrong remains were apparently returned to families in Britain. India's foreign ministry said all remains "were handled with utmost professionalism and with due regard for the dignity of the deceased." "We are continuing to work with the UK authorities on addressing any concerns related to this issue," the statement added. Agence France-Presse

Abandoned UK village dating back to Domesday Book is reopening next month – but visitors must beware of hidden danger

It has been left abandoned since WW2 LOST TO TIME Abandoned UK village dating back to Domesday Book is reopening next month – but visitors must beware of hidden danger Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AN ABANDONED village is set to reopen next month, as visitors are warned about historic dangers. However, a number of signs around the site warn visitors about a potential safety hazard. The signs read: "Danger unexploded military debris. Do not leave the carriageway." Behind the sign, pictures show a disused military tank, as well as a set of tank tracks next to a grassy mound. It includes up to 30 Routemaster buses, as well as other vehicles, that will run from Warminster to Imber, in addition to other villages in Salisbury Plain. Buses will operate for one day only on a regular service between 10am and 6pm. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £2 for children and can be used an unlimited amount on the day. This gives visitors the opportunity to explore other villages in the area. The following week Imber village will reopen to the public. Abandoned golf course where Justin Rose won his first tournament goes up for sale for £3.75m after closing down History While much of the village is no longer in tact, there are still a number of empty houses and cottages that can be explored. A pub called The Bell Inn still stands. Other buildings still standing include the manor house, Imber Court, a farmhouse, farm cottages, a small schoolhouse, and four housing blocks built in 1938. The nearby St Giles' Church dates back to the 13th century and became a Grade I listed building in 1987. A record of the Wiltshire village in the Domesday Book of 1086 shows it was an isolated community that relied heavily on agriculture. Having been owned by the Ministry of Defence since 1932, visitors are only welcome at the site for a few days each year. The opening times usually fall once in the spring, summer, and over the Christmas and New Year period. In 1943, its population of around 150 was evicted to provide a training ground for American troops during WW2. The site is still controlled by the Ministry of Defence, despite attempts from some locals to return. It was last open to the public at Easter, with photos showing the eerie village streets. 8 Around 150 locals were evicted during World War II as the site was used to train American troops Credit: Alamy 8 Bus routes run across the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire Credit: Alamy 8 A number of flat blocks built in 1938 can be seen Credit: Alamy

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary Black Sabbath frontman, died on July 22 at the age of 76. Following his death, a topic from the past involving his wife, Sharon Osbourne, has resurfaced: their previously discussed plan for assisted suicide in the event of an illness. The Osbourne family has been open about their struggles. Now, in the wake of Ozzy's passing, earlier comments made about end-of-life planning are being revisited by some. Press Association via AP Images What Sharon Osbourne Has Said About Assisted Suicide Sharon Osbourne previously expressed support for assisted suicide under certain circumstances. In her 2007 memoir Survivor: My Story – The Next Chapter, she revealed that she and Ozzy agreed to seek help from Dignitas, a Swiss assisted-suicide organization, if either of them developed dementia, per People. It stemmed from the death of Sharon's father, Don Arden, back in 2007, from Alzheimer's disease. In a September 2007 article that appeared in the Daily Mirror, Sharon said she "believes in euthanasia" and said the pair "have drawn up plans to go to the assisted suicide flat in Switzerland if we ever have an illness that affects our brains. If Ozzy or I ever got Alzheimer's, that's it — we'd be off." The talking point was revisited during an October 2023 episode of The Osbournes Podcast, where Sharon, Ozzy, son Jack and daughter Kelly appeared. Jack Osbourne turned to his mother and asked if they still had a plan to go to Switzerland. "Do you think that we're going to suffer?" Sharon replied. "Well, maybe! Isn't life already suffering?" Jack answered. "Yes, we all are, but I don't want it to actually hurt, as well," Sharon said. "Mental suffering is enough pain without physical. So, if you've got mental and physical - see ya." Ozzy was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and has had ongoing health issues since a 2019 fall. His legacy includes two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions, five Grammy wins, and global recognition. He died just weeks after sharing an emotional farewell with fans at Villa Park, which featured bands including Metallica and Guns N' Roses. Kelly Osbourne Comments on 'Suicide Pact' Claims in July 2025 However, daughter Kelly has pushed back on interpretations of the "pact." In an Instagram Story posted on July 11 — 11 days before Ozzy's death — she criticized viral content circulating about her parents. "Stop making articles or posts about how you think my parents are having a suicide pact," she said on the app, per E! News. "That was bulls*** my mom said to get attention one time. And my dad's not dying. Stop." Kelly also responded to AI-generated videos suggesting her father was unwell. "He's not dying," she said. "Yes, he has Parkinson's, and yes, his mobility is completely different than it used to be, but he's not dying. What is wrong with you?" How Many Kids Does Ozzy Osbourne Have? Ozzy Osbourne, original lead singer of Black Sabbath, released several solo albums, including No More Tears and Diary of a Madman. He is survived by six children. He had three children—Aimee, Kelly, and Jack—with Sharon Osbourne, and three others from previous relationships: Jessica, Louis, and Elliot. In a statement following his death, the Osbourne family said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," the statement reads. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis." Where was Ozzy Osbourne when he died? Ozzy Osbourne was surrounded by his family when he died, based on the statement. USA Today reports he died in Birmingham, England. In the hours after his death, tributes poured in from across the music industry. Rock musician Paul Stanley of KISS, rapper and actor Ice T, and rock band Pixies all shared messages of admiration and grief.

Constance Marten: Baby killing mum fancied herself as a photojournalist

Constance Marten and her partner and the father of her five children, Mark Gordon, were both convicted of the manslaughter by gross negligence of their newborn baby Victoria The woman who killed her own baby after she went on the run with her newborn in a bid to stop social services taking her away, once had dreams of becoming a photojournalist. ‌ Constance Marten shared her images as she joined a postgraduate journalism course with her fellow students and tutors. She told them she had been taking shots in America and wanted to focus her reporting on imagery. Her tutor Fiona Webster who was head of Diploma Training at the Press Association in London, said her shots were "really good". ‌ ‌ Marten, 37, was re-tried at the Old Bailey, alongside her partner and the f ather of her five children Mark Gordon, 49, accused of the manslaughter by gross negligence of her newborn baby Victoria. The pair both denied the charge but were unanimously found guilty. They will be sentenced in September. The defendants, of no fixed address, had already been found guilty of perverting the course of justice and concealing the birth of the child at their first trial. Marten and Gordon both lost an appeal against those convictions ‌ The Mirror exclusively reported how Marten had ranted about the judge and prosecutors in her case, comparing them to the Dementors characters in the Harry Potter series. In another insight into the absence of human connection, the diatribe barely referenced the death of little Victoria, but focused almost entirely on Marten complaining about her own situation. Around 10 years ago, before she met Gordon, Marten enrolled herself on a journalism course, having already interned at Al Jazeera, putting her skills from her degree in Middle Eastern studies and Arabic to good use. Journalist and broadcaster Fiona Webster, who taught her, remembered her well. ‌ She had introduced herself to the group as Toots, a family nickname that everyone then used as her name. Ms Webster told the Mirror: "Toots was confident and smiley, she told everyone that she had been in New York taking photos and wanted to become a photojournalist. I looked at her photos and I thought they were really good, she had taken some nice stuff." She added: "People on these intense courses often formed friendships very quickly, that often stick throughout their career. She was friendly with everybody and people liked her but I wouldn't say she had a close friend. ‌ "She felt a little bit like someone who could easily be taken advantage of. She was very trusting of people. She seemed a bit lost. "She wasn't as driven to be a journalist as most people on the course were. She was a little bit lost and slightly naive. She was really trying to do something and have a career and be independent it seemed." ‌ It was around this time that Marten started using photo sharing social media app Instagram. Her 23 posts to just 312 followers lurched between jokes, photos of her with friends and in the beginning some arty photographic shots. Her first half a dozen posts all from her first week of joining the website appear to be shots from her travels - a palm tree, a rack of shoes, an art gallery and a peacock. There is also an arty shot of a policeman staring out into the distance from his vantage point. In another shot of a rainbow of colours, she captioned: "Threadbare, 30,000 pieces of thread". And an almost entirely green coloured shot of a palm leaf which she didn't capture at all. Perhaps the most odd of all her images, was her very last Instagram post - a hastily snapped, with not a lot of photography skill, captured an advert for a Baby Yoga class. Posting the image, which gives a phone number along with a list of benefits your little one could achieve from the class, she added a comment which began with a laughing emoji and the words: "Don't learn to walk... Flex instead!"
