Prince William and Kate Middleton release adorable video to mark Prince George's 12th birthday

Kensington Palace has released adorable photos and a home video in honour of Prince George's 12th birthday. The second-in-line to the British throne, who was born on July 22, 2013, celebrated the milestone occasion alongside his siblings, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. In moments shared on the official Kensington Royal social media accounts, William, Prince of Wales and wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, wished their eldest child a happy birthday, releasing a portrait of the future King looking strikingly similar to his father. The image, taken by Josh Shinner, showed a beaming George leaning against a fence, dressed in a green vest and collared shirt. Royal fans were also treated to a wholesome video of George playing in the backyard with his siblings. In one moment, George and Charlotte could be seen carrying their baby brother Louis as the trio laughed at the camera. The young Prince's birthday comes amid speculation about where he will attend secondary school next year. George, Charlotte and Louis currently go to Lambrook Preparatory School in Berkshire, which teaches students aged from three to 13. It's expected after his 13th birthday, George will either board at Prince William's prestigious former school, Eton College, where Prince Harry was also a student, or Marlborough College, a coeducational college in Windsor where Catherine was a boarding student. Sources recently told Mail on Sunday Catherine's hopes were for all three of the couple's children to attend Marlborough College. 'Parents have been talking about nothing else and discussions have really ramped up in recent weeks but security is obviously a massive consideration,' an insider told the outlet. 'Prince George will have to be housed in an 'in house', these are the houses that are around the main quad of the school. 'The 'out houses' are scattered down the Bath Road, and these present more of a security risk as they are just big houses on their own and involve a lot more walking around which is the downside of Marlborough.' William and Catherine moved their family to Windsor in 2022 to be closer to their school, having previously lived at Kensington Palace in central London.

Twelve things you didn't know about Prince George: From his first royal tour at nine months old to his love of thunderstorms

For most 12-year-olds, birthdays mean cake, presents and being forced to write an endless list of thank you cards. But for Prince George, this year's birthday marks more than just a family celebration. Over the last decade, the world has watched him grow from a cheeky toddler into a charming young man. Today, his 12th birthday marks a significant step towards his future role as King. On July 22, 2013, a wood-and-gold easel announced the birth of Prince William and Princess Catherine's first child. The bells of Westminster Abbey rang out, landmarks were illuminated blue to symbolise the birth of a boy and gun salutes marked the occasion in London, Bermuda, New Zealand and Canada. The most eager royal observers and members of the press camped outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, keen to catch a glimpse of their future King before anybody else. From his first royal tour to his favourite football team, here are 12 things you may not have known about Prince George. Over the last decade, the world has watched Prince George grow from a cheeky toddler into a charming young man Prince Louis (L) and Prince George leave Buckingham Palace ahead of Trooping the Colour ceremony on June 14, 2025 He almost had a different name It was a name that was touted as one of the clear favourites by bookmakers and given the history of the monarchy - and in particular the House of Windsor - William and Kate naming their son George came as no surprise. Sharing a name with his great great grandfather - the Queen's father George VI - the name followed in a long tradition. But he almost had a different name. It was reported that the Waleses considered naming their son Alexander which Kate 'had her heart on'. Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl wrote in Vanity Fair that although 'Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had set her heart on the name Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn' ahead of his birth. Instead, they referred to him as a sweet nickname, 'our little grape.' The Times reported that the royal couple wrote their favourite names on pieces of paper, put them on the floor of their home, and let their cocker spaniel, Lupo, decide which one was the winner - down to what piece of paper he went to first. However, the name Alexander, ended up being included in George's full name - Prince George Alexander Louis. He will be the third George from the House of Windsor to take the throne should he keep the name when he eventually takes the crown. His birth made history When George was born on 22nd July 2013, it marked the second time that three generations in the line of succession have been alive simultaneously. The only other time that this has happened was during the reign of Queen Victoria. Prince Charles' visit to the hospital to see his new grandson was also an historic moment as it is believed to be the first time three direct male heirs to the throne had come together in more than 100 years. First royal tour at nine months old At just nine months old, George began his royal duties and accompanied his parents on their royal tour of New Zealand and Australia in April 2014. Only appearing twice during the tour, nevertheless he was dubbed as 'the star of the show'. The then Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott predicted in the Parliament House, Canberra, that George would one day be welcomed there as King of Australia. Australian media called him 'the republican slayer', after polls showed the lowest support for republicanism in the country for 35 years He loves thunderstorms While many children, pets and even adults are scared of thunderstorms, George apparently loves them. This was revealed when Kate visited a children's hospital where a boy told her a storm was coming. She replied: 'Yes, I know all about those. George likes storms, too!' He's an Alcaraz fan George and Charlotte look downcast at Wimbledon. It has been widely reported that the children are major fans of Alacaraz, who lost the match in four sets At this year's Wimbledon tennis tournament, footage of George and his sister Charlotte went viral as the royal siblings looking disappointed after the the men's final. The future King and his sister joined their parents in the royal box at SW19 to watch Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz take on Italian Jannik Sinner. It has been widely reported that the children are major fans of Alacaraz, who lost the match in four sets. Their love of tennis may have been inspired by the Princess of Wales, who is patron of the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, also known as the AELTC (which organises the day-to-day running of the prestigious tournament). As part of her duties, Kate, who has held the post since 2016, presents the trophy to the tournament's winner. It was during the presentation that the royal children looked downcast, adopting similar poses as they stood with their arms resting on the wall of the royal box. He has flown a plane William talks to George as the stand in front of the RAF Arrows aircraft, during a visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford - the world's largest military airshow in July 2016 The young Prince took his first flying lesson at the age of 11 and flew a single-engine Piper PA-28 with dual controls, a plane designed for flight training. His parents watched him take off and land at White Waltham Airfield near Maidenhead. Onlookers watched George in flight, one of whom told the Sun: 'He loved it. It's the right time to start. The royal family has a proud tradition of flying and it looks like George is next in line.' William and Catherine with George, Charlotte and Louis board a C17 place during their visit to the Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford on July 14, 2023 in Fairford Another person present at the airfield said: 'There were probably 30 or 40 people in the clubhouse. Catherine and William watched George take off. But they were relaxed about it. All three of them had been pretty chilled in the clubhouse.' Flying has been a longstanding tradition among the Royal Family, although Prince George has started to learn much earlier than his father and grandfather. William began aged 27 when he was training with the Royal Air Force, and later served with the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Prince Philip started training aged 31 and was awarded his 'wings' by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir William Dickson at a private ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 1953. He's expected to go to Eton Rumours have been swirling about which senior school the Prince and Princess of Wales will choose for George when he turns 13. Although William and Kate were spotted looking around a number of top schools, Eton and rival Marlborough College were clear front-runners. Eton – the alma mater of Prince William, where fees are more than £63,000 a year – is conveniently near the family home in Windsor. While Prince William thrived there, his brother, Prince Harry, discovered that it was the wrong choice for him Meanwhile, Kate is known to have flourished at Marlborough, and the co-ed school would allow Princess Charlotte to join her elder brother. But a well-placed palace source told The Mail on Sunday 'all roads lead to Eton'. He has seven godparents Royal babies traditionally have about six godparents. William and Kate, like Princess Diana, chose George's godparents to be a blend of traditional and more modern choices. His godparents are; Zara Tindall, Julia Samuel (a close friend of Princess Diana), Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, who met Kate during their school days at Marlborough College, Oliver Baker (a friend from St Andrews, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, who worked as a Private Secretary to Prince William and Kate until 2013 and William van Cutsem, the son of King Charles' late friend Hugh van Cutsem. Aston Villa fan, like his Pa! In April, George looked like William's 'mini me' as they enjoyed a five goal thriller at Villa Park as they watched their beloved Aston Villa face off against Paris Saint-Germain in a nail-biting Champions League clash. He was seen jumping out of his seat to cheer for Aston Villa as well as mirroring his dad's nervous expressions when the team was behind. During William and George's trip to Paris, William said he loves bonding with his son over their shared love of football. 'I want George to experience a night out away from home in a big European competition,' William said. 'I think those memories are really important to create.' George even dressed like his dad by wearing an Aston Villa scarf! He can no longer travel with William George and his father will have to fly separately now the young prince has turned 12 His 12th birthday marks a major milestone, which will also see a centuries-old royal rule that his own father also had to follow come into force. According to the protocol, two heirs to the throne cannot fly together when undertaking royal duties. The royal custom dictates that anyone over 12 years old in the line of succession cannot travel together for safety reasons. He has an unusual nickname During his time at Thomas's School, George was given the nickname P.G. by his classmates. Kate and William reportedly adopted the nickname, affectionately referring to their firstborn as PG Tips, as in the tea! A King for a new age Two heirs! Prince George turns 12: Inside the birth that sparked a frenzy - and why Meghan Markle 'felt sorry for Kate'

The bells of Westminster Abbey rang out, landmarks were illuminated blue to symbolise the birth of a boy and gun salutes marked the occasion in London, Bermuda, New Zealand and Canada. On this day 12 years ago, a wood-and-gold easel announced the birth that was celebrated all over the world as Prince William and Princess Catherine welcomed the birth of their son and heir to the throne. Within hours of Prince George Alexander Louis, Kate appeared on the steps of the Lindo Wing looking immaculately put-together to greet the world's media camping outside. The Princess of Wales - who was 31 at the time - radiated with happiness as she cuddled her newborn son and stood next to her proud husband William. Prince George was born at 4.24pm on July 22, 2013, weighing 8lb 6oz, at the same Paddington Hospital where his father was delivered 31 years earlier. Kate looked effortlessly stylish in a light blue polka dot dress, white heels and minimal makeup for her first public appearance as a mother. Even though Kate was following in her late mother-in-law's footsteps with her Lindo Wing appearance, her glamorous look subsequently upped the style stakes for all royal mothers going forward. But not everyone agreed with this decades-old tradition. An insider claimed that Meghan Markle 'felt sorry' for Kate Middleton after her public appearance following the birth of Prince George and later Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, particularly the photo calls at the Lindo Wing. This sentiment reportedly stemmed from Meghan's view that the public expectations surrounding these appearances were overly demanding for a new mother. Meghan reportedly felt that the Lindo Wing appearances were a stressful and unnecessary tradition. Some sources indicated that Meghan, a self-proclaimed feminist, may have viewed the post-birth photo calls as putting undue pressure on Kate and other women to present a perfect image shortly after giving birth. Meghan and Harry chose to keep the birth of their son, Archie, private and did not participate in the traditional Lindo Wing photo call. But others argued that Kate both honoured the tradition of the photocall, as well as providing a breath of fresh air by proudly showing her post-baby bump rather than hiding it. Parents from around the world heaped praises on Kate with Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard saying the Duchess had dispelled the 'myth that all mothers should be perfect postpartum'. 'Kate shows what a real mum looks like – and natural is beautiful' she added The Princess of Wales' blue polka dot dress has been widely regarded by many as a sweet nod to the late Princess Diana, who is pictured outside the Lindo Wing in 1982 after the birth of Prince William The Lindo Wing was also used for the birth of William in 1982 and Harry in 1984. This is while in 1977 the Princess Royal had Peter Phillips there, followed by daughter Zara in 1981. As such, the Princess of Wales' blue polka dot dress has been widely regarded by many as a sweet nod to the late Princess Diana. What's more, the royal had her own glam squad on standby in the hospital - as she emerged on the steps with a beautifully styled straight blow-dry and radiant face of makeup. During the hour the birth was announced 12 per cent of all the content read or watched around the world related to the new arrival. Shortly after seeing George, Prince Harry said one of his duties as an uncle was 'to make sure he has fun'. In 2018, Kate Middleton was seen on the steps of the Lindo Wing - just hours after giving birth to Prince Louis - looking equally as glamourous. For the occasion, Kate wore a pretty red dress with a lace-trim Peter Pan collar and nude suede heels. Her flawless appearance, neatly styled locks and full face of make-up in front of cameras was possibly regarded by Meghan as too much to bear just hours after delivery. Seeing double! Diana and Kate matched once again. Diana is pictured leaving the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital following the birth of Prince Harry on September 16, 1984 and Kate is pictured in 2018 after the birth of Prince Louis Prince Archie was born in the Portland Hospital in Westminster and his birth was only announced after the family of three had returned home to Frogmore Cottage In the Queen's 2013 Christmas broadcast, she spoke about her great-grandson Prince George and said the birth of a baby allows people to think about the future with renewed 'happiness and hope'. In her traditional message to the nation, the Queen also made an observation about the future for new parents - 'life will never be quite the same again'. Opting for an entirely different approach, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry broke from royal tradition in May 2019 and kept Archie's birth a fierce secret. Prince Archie was born in the Portland Hospital in Westminster and his birth was only announced after the family of three had returned home to Frogmore Cottage. The couple decided to hold their carefully managed photocall in St George's Hall at Windsor Castle - with just a handful of press present. For the occasion, Meghan oozed glamour in a crisp white belted blazer dress by British designer Grace Wales Bonner. She kept the look simple by pairing it with her pair of nude Manolo Blahnik BB pumps and kept her accessories to a minimum, wearing a simple Jennifer Meyer turquoise necklace. And in a further break from tradition, the new parents used their Instagram account to announce Archie's name. Over the last decade, the world has watched George grow from a cheeky toddler into a charming young man. And while most 12-year-olds celebrate with cake and presents, this year George's birthday marks more than just a family celebration. A rule set in place to protect the order of succession will come into place, meaning he can no longer travel on the same aircraft as another heir, in this case his father. This right of passage marks a significant step towards his future role as King. William and George showed their close bond during the men's singles final at Wimbledon George will likely feel a sense of duty to uphold the traditions of the Crown, much as Kate did with the photocalls. In February 2020, Kate admitted that she found it 'terrifying' to debut her three children to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing. The mother-of-three was speaking as a guest on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast when she was asked by host Giovanna Fletcher what it was like to stand in front of the crowds with a newborn baby in her arms. Ms Fletcher, who was speaking about Kate's first appearance with Prince George in 2013, asked: 'What was it like knowing that there were so many people outside after you've given birth and you're in your little cocoon with your new family?' The Duchess of Cambridge said: 'Slightly terrifying, I'm not going to lie. 'Everyone had been so supportive and both William and I were really conscious that this was something that everyone was excited about and we're hugely grateful for the support that the public had shown us, and actually for us to be able to share that joy and appreciation with the public, I felt was really important.

Princess Kate, Prince William attend Wimbledon men's final

Princess Catherine and Prince William attended the Wimbledon men's singles final Sunday along with their eldest two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Kate has attended the prestigious tennis tournament in London nearly every year since 2011, and she was also in attendance for Saturday's women's singles final. Despite that dismal match — Iga Swiatek crushed Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 — Kate brought the family back for Sunday's men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who most recently played a stirring final at the French Open in June. George, 11, and Charlotte, 10, have attended matches in the royal box on Centre Court alongside their parents before. George first attended the tournament in 2022, and Charlotte watched her first match in person the next year. However, Kate and William's youngest child, 7-year-old Prince Louis, has not yet attended the tournament. Kate has missed Wimbledon only once in the past 15 years, skipping in 2013 when she was several months pregnant with George. Last year, her appearance at the men's final between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic was one of the first times she stepped out in public after being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year. The Prince and Princess of Wales were not the only royals in attendance Sunday. King Felipe of Spain also watched the match, presumably cheering on his countryman, Alcaraz. _________
