M'sian developers bag nine global awards in Lagos
Projects recognised for innovation, sustainability and community impact MALAYSIAN developers achieved significant recognition at the 33rd FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards in Lagos, Nigeria, securing nine accolades – five gold and four silver. These awards celebrate excellence in real estate development, recognising projects that prioritise innovation, sustainability and community impact. This year, Malaysian developers were honoured across various project categories, including affordable housing, office spaces, industrial parks and environmentally focused developments. FIABCI World president Ramon Riera Torroba commended the winners, stating that the awards celebrated developments that went beyond beauty and function. 'These are projects that embody innovation, sustainability and community impact – developments that give back to the environment and society in meaningful and lasting ways,' he said. FIABCI Prix d'Excellence committee president Laszlo Gonczi emphasised the awards' global reach, noting the rise of national competitions inspired by earlier efforts in Brazil, Malaysia and Singapore. 'This is more than a contest. It's a global forum where quality outweighs size and where David can truly defeat Goliath,' he said. He added that developers from countries without national competitions were encouraged to enter directly, many of whom later became the catalyst for the formation of local chapters. The Prix Secretariat secretary Dr Yu Kee Su, praised this year's entries for setting new industry benchmarks. 'Let us reaffirm our shared mission to shape spaces that are not only functional and beautiful, but also sustainable and future-ready,' he said. 'The integration of green building practices and smart technologies has never been more critical, and your work exemplifies the transformative power of these principles.' One of Malaysia's celebrated developers, SP Setia Bhd, stood out with two accolades at this year's ceremony. The group received a Gold Award for Sapphire by The Gardens in Melbourne, Australia (a residential high-rise) and a Silver Award for Amantara at Setia Eco Templer (residential low-rise). At the FIABCI elections for world vice-president (2025–2026), Yu was appointed for the role during the 75th FIABCI World Real Estate Congress in Lagos. 'I am deeply honoured and sincerely grateful for your trust and support,' said Yu, after two rounds of online voting via the FIABCI App. 'This recognition makes my 25-year journey in FIABCI, serving in various roles, all the more meaningful. 'The path was never easy, but your belief in me has made the journey worthwhile,' he said. This appointment comes as FIABCI-Malaysia prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary – a golden jubilee, to be marked by an event on Oct 9, at One World Hotel, Bandar Utama, Selangor. The celebration will highlight five decades of dedication to promoting real estate professionalism, elevating Malaysian developers onto the world stage and fostering strong international ties. The event will also honour Datuk Alan Tong, a past world president (2005–2006), who turns 90 in September, as well as remember the late Michael Geh Thuan Peng and Yeow Thit Sang, two past presidents, whose legacies continue to inspire the FIABCI community in Malaysia and beyond. Ryan Moore guides Camille Pissarro to French Derby success
Camille Pissarro was given a fine ride by Ryan Moore to provide trainer Aidan O'Brien with his second Qatar Prix du Jockey Club. A close-up third behind stablemate Henri Matisse in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains last month, the Ballydoyle inmate was sent off the bookmakers' favourite for the French Derby, his second taste of Classic action in France. From a position on the inside rail, his pilot had to be patient once the race started to unfold up the home straight, but Moore found the gaps at the right time to deliver his mount. Andre Fabre's Cualificar kept on for second ahead of John and Thady Gosden's Detain. The winner's stablemate Trinity College finished fourth after being up with pace alongside the Clarehaven-trained Bowmark for the majority of the contest.

Trackside buffet fuels race car drivers for Detroit Grand Prix
Detroit Grand Prix drivers and their crews spend hours at the track. So what do they eat? Many go with food from Scheper Event Group, whose buffet-style mobile restaurant travels with different race series. Kaitlin Scheper, who is overseeing Detroit's operation, said their 11-person crew is feeding 200-400 people for each meal at Detroit Christ Church, located along the race route. This is a small operation relative to some of the company's catering, where it feeds up to 1,500 people a meal, she said. This is Scheper's second year working with their mobile kitchen set up in the church parking lot. Many times, Scheper sets up its dining area in a big tent, but the church provides indoor seating and relief from the elements. The church can usually seat 120 comfortably, the church's associate for communications, Bethann Tesluk, said, but the Schepers crew can get teams in and out quickly throughout meal periods. Scheper said the meal space can be a place for drivers and crews to catch a break from the track and pits as well as to catch up with and banter with former co-workers and opponents they've known for many years. What do they eat? Schepers provides an array of foods, including salads, hot dogs, fried chicken, vegan options and more, but the driver-specific buffet is usually plain pasta or rice, a steamed vegetable and a simple meat, like chicken breast, Scheper said. 'This is a huge positive to the (Prix) series, just having this as an option for the teams because it's one less thing for the teams to have to worry about,' Scheper said. 'They don't have to necessarily worry about where I'm going to go get lunch for my crew when they're in the middle of a race, they know that there's an option on site.' Schepers Event Group coordinates with the race officials, but drivers and their teams pay by meal, with a heads up in advance, if they plan to eat with Schepers. Scott opts for Sandown with Bay City Roller
George Scott has skipped the Prix du Jockey Club with Bay City Roller who will instead make his seasonal reappearance in the Star Sports Heron Stakes – ground permitting. The unbeaten Champagne Stakes winner was being initially aimed at the Irish 2,000 Guineas before he had his attentions switched to the French Derby. However, with warm weather in France and rain forecast in the UK, Scott feels he has better chance of getting more suitable conditions at Sandown on Thursday evening. 'We've been battling with the weather. Every time we make a plan for him it seems to dry up,' he said. 'We're very keen to run him on good ground at the fastest. So although they water very well in France, it looks a very warm build up to that race and we just thought it was sensible with the rain around to redirect to Sandown. 'We've got the impression that 10 furlongs isn't going to be a problem but where we are at, with the lack of opportunities at this stage of the season, we've had to go where the race is so he'll start off at a mile.' He added: 'I'm very happy with the horse, he's training as well as you could hope and he's in really good shape. He's a horse who has won at the track so we won't be looking for any excuses, put it that way.'
