Gujarat HC extends Asaram's bail till July 7, cites pending certification
Jun 28, 2025 11:11 AM IST Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has extended controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu's temporary bail until July 7, citing pending certification from the national legal services authority (NLSA). The court has scheduled the next hearing for July 2, five days before the bail expires. (HT File Photo) Justice Ilesh J. Vora and justice P.M. Raval granted the 10-day extension on Friday. Asaram, 83, is serving life imprisonment for raping a female disciple at his ashram near Gandhinagar. A sessions court convicted him in January 2023 for rape and sodomy. He has also been convicted in a case in Rajasthan under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), where a special POCSO court in Jodhpur convicted him in 2018 for molesting minors at his ashram in August 2013. The Supreme Court, in January, granted interim bail to Asaram on medical grounds until March 31, while imposing several conditions, including a bar on meeting followers in large numbers. The Gujarat High Court then extended this bail by three months in March. In January last year, the top court refused to suspend his sentence in that case on health grounds, while allowing him to withdraw and request the High Court to expedite his appeal challenging the conviction. Senior advocate Shalin Mehta appeared for Asaram, while the state was represented by senior advocate B.B. Naik and public prosecutor Hardik Dave. The court has scheduled the next hearing for July 2, five days before the bail expires. In a related development, the Gujarat High Court recently granted Asaram's son, Narayan Sai—also serving a life sentence for rape—five days' bail to meet his father on humanitarian grounds.

'Difficult For Women To Find Life Partner After Breakup': High Court On Live-In Relationships
Last Updated: A Bench of Justice Siddharth noted that courts have been flooded with such cases ever since live-in relationships were 'legalised' by the Supreme Court The Allahabad High Court has observed that women suffer more in comparison to men when live-in relationships end, and it is difficult for women to find a life partner after a breakup. The court's observation came while granting bail to a man accused of sexually exploiting a woman under a false promise of marriage. A Bench of Justice Siddharth noted that courts have been flooded with such cases ever since live-in relationships were 'legalised' by the Supreme Court. 'These cases are coming to the Court because the concept of live-in-relationship is against the settled law in the Indian Middle Class Society," the Court said, as cited by Bar & Bench. Justice Siddharth said the concept of live-in-relationship goes against the interest of the women, 'since a man can marry even after a live-in-relationship with a woman or several women, but it is difficult for the women to find a life partner after a breakup. The Court observed that although live-in relationships appeal strongly to the younger generation, their negative consequences are evident in cases such as the one at hand. A woman filed a case against the petitioner, Shane Alam, stating that he had a sexual relationship with her based on a promise that he would marry her. She claimed that Alam later refused to marry her. Alam was booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act). Earlier this year, the Supreme Court has held that a woman, who has been in a long-term live-in relationship, may not be able to claim she was forced into a physical relationship by her partner under the promise of marriage and later file rape charges against him. The top court said that in such cases, it cannot be definitively concluded that physical relations occurred solely on the basis of a promise of marriage First Published: June 27, 2025, 14:36 IST
