Proton claims early order surge for X50

Malaysia's first national car company, Proton Holdings Bhd, has said it received 5,000 bookings for its all-new Proton X50 within the first ten days after it opened its order book in early July. The automaker launched an 'early bird' promotion campaign, which includes a MYR 1,000 (US$ 236) cash rebate for the first 10,000 buyers. The all-new B-segment X50 SUV, based on the Geely Geely Binyou L, will be officially launched in Malaysia this week, along with full pricing details. Proton claims the new model has 245 new dedicated parts that were developed as a result of more than 400,000 man-hours of R&D in collaboration with Geely. Proton confirmed that production is underway at its Tanjong Malim plant in Malaysia, as the company looks to begin deliveries immediately after the model's official launch, with at least the first 5,000 units expected to be delivered to customers by the end of August. The new X50 is powered by Geely's new i-GT 1.5 TD engine, coupled to a 7-speed DCT gearbox, delivering 133 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque. It also comes with an upgraded ADAS Level 2 system. Proton all-new X50 draws 5,000 bookings in 10 days ahead of launch

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has received 5,000 bookings for its all-new Proton X50 just 10 days after opening orders on July 5, averaging one booking every three minutes. This accounts for half of the 10,000 early bird units under a special launch promo, which includes a RM1,000 cash rebate, a limited edition Touch 'n Go card and an exclusive 'Gempak! Deal'. Full pricing will be revealed at the official launch on the evening of July 24, Proton said in a statement today. Proton Edar Sdn Bhd deputy chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said the strong response underscores Malaysians' enthusiasm for the model. "To build on this momentum, we'll begin offering test drives at our outlets from July 19 so customers can experience the X50 firsthand," he said. Zhang said Proton's Tanjong Malim plant has ramped up production to ensure immediate availability. "Our goal is to have at least 5,000 units ready for registration by end-August to minimise waiting times," he added. The new Proton X50, aimed at buyers with active lifestyles, features refreshed styling, a more powerful engine, and an upgraded 14.6-inch infotainment display. It also debuts Bahasa Melayu voice recognition and an enhanced Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System with semi-autonomous driving functions.

Proton gains market share despite June TIV slump

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd increased its market share in June despite a significant 21 per cent drop in Malaysia's total industry volume (TIV), which was driven by external economic pressures and evolving consumer sentiment. The national carmaker sold 11,069 units in June, a marginal year-on-year increase, bringing its year-to-date (YTD) sales to 72,156 units, the company said in a statement today. Proton's market share rose to 20.7 per cent in June, up from 19.6 per cent in May and 1.2 percentage points higher than its YTD average of 19.5 per cent. The company estimates the TIV dropped 21 per cent to 53,500 units in June, down from 68,007 units in May, amid mounting external economic pressures including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the recent expansion of the Sales and Service Tax. Export performance remained strong with 414 units shipped overseas in June, pushing total exports to 2,250 units in the first half, a 39.9 per cent increase from the same period last year. Leading this growth, the group's sole electric vehicle (EV), the Proton 7, recorded sales of 4,253 units across domestic and export markets in the first six months. The model currently holds a 24 per cent share of Malaysia's EV market. Proton Edar Sdn Bhd deputy chief executive officer Zhang Qiang said that despite the challenging landscape, the group managed to outperform the market to increase its share. "With new models arriving in our showrooms, the outlook is for the company to have a stronger second half of 2025 as we seek to increase sales for our internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV offerings," he said in a statement. Zhang added that despite lower overall sales in June, the Proton X50 remained the top seller in the B-segment sport utility vehicle (SUV) category, with 1,657 units sold in June, including 353 units for export markets. Total sales for the model reached 11,361 units for the first half of 2025, marking an 11.3 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. An all-new X50 will be launched later this month, featuring updated styling, a new 1.5-litre gasoline direct injection engine, and advanced driver assistance features, with pre-launch bookings beginning in June. Other segment leaders, including the Proton X90 and Proton S70, topped the D-segment SUV and C-segment sedan classes, respectively. Additionally, the Proton X70 saw the highest YoY growth, with 533 units sold in June and a total of 4,354 units in the first half, up 46.3 per cent compared to 2024. Looking ahead, Proton plans to expand the lineup to more countries and introduce new models. "The bulk of Proton's sales are from ICE models, but our EV and export segments are showing strong growth potential. "As EV infrastructure grows and buyer confidence improves, we are hopeful of a quantum leap in EV sales with the introduction of more models," Zhang added.

Proton targets over 2,000 monthly sales for new X50 SUV

SHAH ALAM: Proton Holdings Bhd aims to sell at least 'two thousand plus' units of the 'all-new' Proton X50 per month when it launches. Deputy chief executive officer of Proton Edar, Zhang Qiang, said that with the newly upgraded features, the new Proton X50 model would continue to be the nation's best-selling B-segment SUV. 'We are targeting to sell at least 2,000 plus units of this new Proton X50 per month,' he told reporters after the pre-launch of the latest Proton X50 model at Setia City Mall, Shah Alam today. Zhang said Proton Edar will start to accept bookings for the X50 new models, targeting 10,000 units before the official launch sometime this month. The new X50 comes with a bold new design and now features Malay language voice recognition. It is available in the executive, premium, and flagship variants, with the overall new add-on features valued at more than RM10,000. Since its debut in 2020, the Proton X50 has redefined the SUV segment in Malaysia, with over 140,000 units sold, positioning it as the nation's best-selling B-segment SUV for five consecutive years. - Bernama
