‘The Walking Dead: Dead City' Boss Breaks Down That Maggie-Negan Game-Changing Choice in Season 2 Finale
[This story contains spoilers from season two finale.] Almost a decade ago, The Walking Dead took a baseball bat to its sprawling ensemble and changed the course of the show forever. Hard as it is to believe, Steven Yeun's Glenn was smashed out of the story all the way back in 2016. Nearly 10 years on, Lauren Cohan's Maggie has yet to satisfy vengeance against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the man who giddily beat her husband to death. At long last, Maggie finally had Negan dead to rights in the season two finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City, the spinoff show starring these two blood-crossed rivals — and just as she got up at bat, she decided to walk away from the plate. More from The Hollywood Reporter Norman Reedus to Lead Canneseries Jury Jon Bernthal to Return in 'Punisher' Special for Marvel and Disney+ 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' Season 3 First-Look Previews Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride's Long Journey Home Sunday night's Dead City finale, titled 'If History Were a Conflagration,' sees Negan deciding to go full heel in order to defeat Bruegel (Kim Coates), the franchise's newest psychopath, in a battle for supremacy over the post-apocalyptic New York City. Both men are vying for control over a game-changing supply of methane produced by walkers that could power the city back online. Maggie, meanwhile, is tasked by the Dama (Lisa Emery) with finding and assassinating Negan so she can finally move on from her decades-long grudge. With her son Hershel (Logan Kim) spurring her on, Maggie takes on the assignment, and even makes it as far as stabbing Negan in the back — only to suffer a crisis of conscience, realizing killing the man won't bring Glenn back, and finally accepting that the only way to move forward is to truly let go and find peace with Negan. If anyone thought Maggie would actually go through with killing Negan then good, showrunner Eli Jorné and team did their job. But killing the character off was never truly on the table — according to executive producer Scott M. Gimple, who oversees the Walking Dead franchise in its many iterations. 'We wanted you on the edge of your seat,' he tells The Hollywood Reporter. But ultimately, he says, this Walking Dead spinoff series is 'as much about Negan as it is about Maggie.' According to Gimple, the story choice boils down to wanting to find a new iteration of Negan and Maggie who can finally set aside their past and move forward toward a future where New York actually stands a chance of returning to civilization. 'For these two characters, if keeping Negan alive is holding on, is killing him actually letting go? I like how this goes right up to the edge of that choice, almost like it's A Christmas Carol, where she's all-but killed him, and has found that it's not fulfilling the journey she's been on for herself — the journey of who she was and who she's becoming. 'This has been a very long story,' he adds. 'It's been years and years that we've seen Maggie and Negan in this cycle. Maggie has been completely and totally justified in her hate and anger and trauma, but for the audience, we've been watching her live with that for so long. It's been eight years [of real time], and I want to see Maggie surmount this thing and evolve from it.' While a third season of Dead City has not yet been announced, Gimple ensures that any future stories told about Negan and Maggie won't be overly friendly now that the two have buried the hatchet. 'They're not going to be skipping and holding hands,' he says, 'but hate is corrosive to the person hating, and I think that's what this season portrayed. It's not necessarily sunshine and rainbows, but I do think this is a happy ending.' Maggie ends the season finding resolution with Negan. But her son? Not as much. Hershel is deeply disappointed in his mother's choice, and decides to stick with the Dama, the deadly woman who continues to corrupt the late Glenn's teenage son. Here, Maggie makes another choice, deciding to let Hershel follow his own path for the time being. 'It's funny to think about it this way, but this situation boils down to being a very difficult parenting decision,' says Gimple. 'It's kind of like letting your kid go off and follow a jam band. 'I don't approve of this, but it's your choice.' It's an enormous amount of faith Maggie's putting in Hershel at the end here. If she had killed Negan, maybe she'd get to have a relationship with her son right now. But if she had killed Negan, would she still be herself? And if not, what does that relationship with her son look like? It's complicated stuff.' How will Maggie and Negan, and even Maggie and Hershel, navigate the new turns in their relationships? Again, Gimple won't confirm a third season of Dead City just yet, but he does think about what the future holds for these characters. 'Where do they go from here? What do these choices mean, and what kinds of stories help us harness that relationship, that challenge, that showcase their new dynamics?' he asks. 'The last two seasons featured a dynamic that's now concluded [with Maggie and Negan settling their score]. Now, it's time to show you something different.' *** Walking Dead: Dead City season two is now available via AMC and AMC Plus. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Could Adapt a Classic Spider-Man vs. Punisher Storyline — GeekTyrant
Marvel studios is set to shake things up with Spider-Man: Brand New Day with the inclusion of Jon Bernthal's Punisher. It was a welcome surprise to learn that he's stepping into Peter Parker's world. A blood-soaked vigilante known for body counts, torture, and military-grade takedowns… teaming up (or clashing) with the MCU's most cheerful do-gooder who still gets carded buying glue? There's a interesting dynamic here to play with! It's also a tonal tightrope. The Punisher, especially in Bernthal's hands, isn't just violent, he's R-rated level brutal. Meanwhile, Tom Holland's Spider-Man lives in a PG-13 sandbox, cracking jokes with fun and playful action. Merging these two sensibilities without neutering one or alienating fans of the other is going to take serious finesse. This isn't new territory, though. In fact, the origin of their comic book relationship may be the perfect guide for how Marvel Studios could pull this off. Back in 1974, Frank Castle made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 . Created by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr., and Ross Andru, Castle wasn't the antihero we know today. He was introduced as a straight-up antagonist, a guy manipulated by the Jackal into believing Spider-Man had murdered Norman Osborn. Castle, a battle-hardened Marine out for vengeance, did what he does best… hunted his target with no questions asked. It was a classic setup that centered on a lethal, no-nonsense soldier going after a hero known for holding back and giving people the benefit of the doubt. The tension didn't just come from their awesome fight scenes; it came from their opposing worldviews. Ultimately, after plenty of punches and bullets, Spider-Man convinced Castle he'd been lied to. They walked away not as friends, but with a complicated mutual respect. That's the spark Brand New Day could reignite. In the MCU, Peter has the physical edge with his enhanced strength, Spider-Sense, web-shooters, the works. But Frank Castle isn't the kind of guy you beat just by punching harder. He fights dirty. He's relentless. And unlike Peter, he's not burdened by a no-kill rule. That kind of dynamic sets the stage for a conflict that could challenge Peter morally more than physically, maybe even forcing him to defend people he'd normally fight just to stop Frank from going too far. Spider-Man's been due for a more grounded, street-level story, and Brand New Day could finally deliver that. Especially considering where we last left Castle, breaking out of the prison Fisk tossed him into, and what's brewing in Daredevil: Born Again , where Wilson Fisk is cracking down on vigilantes and practically declaring war on masked heroes. If Spider-Man is out there dodging cops while Punisher's hunting criminals, they're bound to cross paths. There's also talk of a standalone Punisher special dropping before Brand New Day , which could lay the groundwork for his reentry into the MCU and explain how he ends up in Spidey's orbit. If Marvel leans into the tension between these two characters, not just as combatants but as symbols of clashing ideologies, Brand New Day could be more than just another Spidey sequel. It could be a return to the kind of morally complex storytelling that helped make these characters iconic in the first place.

Jon Bernthal's PUNISHER Will Appear in SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
No one on Earth-616 remembers Peter Parker after he sacrificed his identity to save the world in No Way Home. But while nobody in the MCU might know who he is anymore, we know one superhero who will appear in his next film. Jon Bernthal's Punisher is joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day. One of Marvel's most famous vigilantes is going to share the screen with everyone's favorite neighborhood Spider-Man. The Punisher himself is joining the cast of Marvel and Sony's next joint Spider-Man movie. (News we first heard about at The Hollywood Reporter.) The film will see Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon reprise their Home trilogy roles. The movie will also mark the MCU debut of Sadie Sink, whose role is still under wraps. It's unclear how Bernthal's Punisher will fit into his first MCU movie, as very little is known about the Spider-Man: Brand New Day's plot. (Though its controversial title does offer plenty of room to speculate.) What's obvious, though, is that Bernthal has quickly become a major part of the franchise. He recently returned to the role of Frank Castle—which he first played on Netflix's Marvel series—on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. He will also star in his own Marvel Punisher special, which he is writing. Now Bernthal's Punisher is going to appear in a film alongside one of the most popular, most beloved comic book superheroes ever, Spider-Man. Even the Punisher can't be angry about that. But somehow we know he'll find a way regardless. Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Production begins this summer in England, so we'll likely hear some more casting news sooner than later. We'll then officially get to see what kind of business the Punisher has with Peter Parker/that guy no one knows when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, 2026.
