CM Revanth Reddy launches EAGLE to keep hawk's eye on drugs

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday announced the formation of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) to replace the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau, stating that the new entity will intensify surveillance and enforcement against drug-related activities. Speaking at a programme to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Shilpakala Vedika, Revanth said, 'Telangana has begun efforts to curb drugs and ganja. Even if one ganja plant is grown or drugs are brought into the state, EAGLE will monitor it. Be cautious.' He reiterated his aim of making Telangana a drug-free state, asserting that no drugs would be allowed to enter its borders. 'From Komaram Bheem to Chakali Ilamma, Doddi Komuraiah and Sarvai Papanna, many have inspired the people through various movements. Universities and colleges once served as platforms for the statehood struggle. Now, the state is facing a different challenge. We must ask ourselves if Telangana becoming a hub of ganja is a matter of self-respect or shame,' Revanth said. CM: No progress as long as drugs rule the roost The chief minister disclosed that soon after assuming office, he instructed officials to take strict action against drugs. Referring to India's performance at the Olympics, he said: 'A country with a population of 140 crore not winning a single gold medal, is that not an embarrassment? Can a country where drug use is widespread progress?' Revanth pointed out that states such as Punjab and Haryana were already facing severe drug-related challenges. 'Youth in those states have become addicted and families are suffering. Punjabis once led from the front in wars and the Freedom Movement, but the situation has changed,' he said.

Assets cited in case long held by Majithia's family: SAD hits back

Chandigarh: SAD Thursday said AAP in Punjab "violated the law" by registering a DA case against SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia , saying that it did not hold either a preliminary or regular probe. The party accused AAP of indulging in vendetta politics to gag Majithia and using the arrest to divert attention from the failure of its anti-drug campaign. Without naming any leaders, but in what ostensibly was a remark directed at AAP, SAD leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal cited Majithia's affluent background to claim he was innocent. He was speaking at a press conference, accompanied by party leaders Balwinder Singh Bhunder and Daljit Singh Cheema, "It makes me laugh. Those (AAP leaders) who fix punctures and repair telephones are levelling DA allegations on the person whose grandfather, and it is a matter of record, had a Rolls Royce in 1956. There were five Rolls Royce cars in India, and they (Majithia family) had three-four airplanes at that time," Grewal said. Grewal said the public prosecutor today stated that only a disproportionate assets case was registered against Majithia. "Even this is fabricated. The properties mentioned in the complaint were with the Majithia family even before Bikram was born," he added. Citing his 50-year legal experience, Grewal said there are executive instructions to hold a preliminary inquiry when a complaint is received in DA cases following which explanation is sought from the accused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo "After a preliminary inquiry, a regular inquiry is conducted," he said. Grewal added the drug situation in Punjab had not changed. "People are dying. Drugs are getting sold on a larger scale. Corruption has not stopped and they (AAP leaders) have not been able to give employment. Besides, law and order has collapsed; and democracy is dead," he said. Grewal accused AAP govt of misleading Punjabis and even committing contempt of court by stating that Majithia was arrested in a Rs 540-crore drug case. Claiming that Majithia had been subject to a media trial since 2015, Grewal termed the registration of a fresh case against Majithia as "murder of democracy and murder of the judicial system".
