Hawaii, worldwide love pouring in for Dakota Briley's recovery

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A young man on Oahu is fighting for his life after he was crushed by a car while he was standing on the side of the loved ones have received an outpouring of support since the crash on Saturday, June 14. 20-year-old Dakota Briley was unloading surfboards on the North Shore of Oahu near Chun's Beach on Saturday when the unthinkable happened. Police said an 18-year-old man was driving westbound on Kamehameha Highway when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit Briley, pinning him between two vehicles on the shoulder of the road. Briley is currently hospitalized at Queen's Medical Center, but his loved ones are clinging to hope — even in the darkest moments. 'I didn't want to believe it. I was in denial. And then I found out details. My friend was first there on the scene, and he was like, 'it's really bad,'' said Jason Magallanes, a longtime Briley family friend. 'But the good news is, I overheard the doctor saying yesterday that the bleeding and swelling stopped in his head, and there's some excessive bleeding in his hips, or pelvis, as well and they put that together, and they stop the bleeding with that.' Dakota also suffered fractures to his legs, skull, ribs and spine. His road to recovery is far from clear, but those that know him best said he has always been a warrior. Honolulu police investigate fatal crash in Haleiwa 'Working out, surfing, eating right. He's huge on diet, you know, 'Do the right thing and put the right stuff in your body and take care of your body.' And that's why I know he's strong. He's in a good position. And he's going to pull through but we do need prayers,' said longtime Briley Family Friend Tanoai Reed. 'If anybody is going to make it out of this, it's going to be the Dakota,' Magallanes said. 'He's stubborn. He has a fire and, he's a warrior.' Friends and family said the support has poured in from across Hawaii and the globe — over $130,000 have been raised on the GoFundMe for Dakota's medical expenses. Loved ones told KHON2 that Dakota will undergo a major surgery at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 where doctors will operate on his severely-damaged spine — they are still confident that continued prayers from the public and help from the doctors inside Queen's will see him through. 'Dakota, uncle loves you,' Reed said. 'You're going to make it through this. And, you know, no matter what happens afterwards, we're going to be there together and you got a huge, long life ahead of you.' 'Dakota, I love you. Just keep fighting and I know, I know God's going to heal you,' Magallanes said. 'The love is real overwhelming and, and we're all here for you.' Big changes coming to Wahiawa

WAHIAWA (KHON2) — Big changes are coming to Wahiawa. Old buildings are being demolished and modern facilities are going up. Blaze devastates newly revamped playground at Wahiawa park Many said it will help revitalize the old plantation town and help bring crime levels down. On Thursday, Wahiawa residents said they heard a loud boom coming from the former Wahiawa General Hospital. 'I looked outside and I couldn't believe it was finally happening,' said Keoni Ahlo, who owns several Wahiawa businesses including BioFit and Teaspresso across the street from the hospital. 'We had been hearing rumors about it coming down, we didn't know if it was true or not, but apparently it is true because they are tearing it down.' The dilapidated long-term care facility building was built in 1966 and closed back in 2022, then the hospital was taken over by Queen's Medical Center. 'It's been around for a while, and it's definitely something we're used to seeing every day, so seeing it gone is going to be quite unusual.' Queen's Medical Center hasn't announced plans for what will replace the Saturday, Wahiawa Public Library will close its doors as it prepares for a new chapter and will be demolished along with the Dept. of Education's Wahiawa High Core store front building. 'Both those buildings are sorely outdated,' explained Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz (D) Mililani Mauka, Wahiawa, Whitmore Village. 'I mean we're talking about almost termites holding it up.' In about two years, the library will be part of a three-story building along with a parking garage. 'We'll see a new library on the bottom, central district offices on the second floor, and community college classrooms on the third floor,' Dela Cruz explained. He said the Wahiawa Center for Workforce Excellence will provide educational opportunities for North Shore too. 'I think we'll see an uptake in usage of library especially for rural communities that might not have access to technology, computers and audio books, they can come to the library and that's all accessible to them,' Sen. Dela Cruz added. Construction is set to begin this summer and completed in Spring 2027. It will be located right next door to the new Civic Center which will house the new Satellite City Hall and have a two-story judicial building which is slated to open December 2025. Dela Cruz and others say all the work will help revitalize Wahiawa. Ask A Specialist: Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

HONOLULU (KHON2) — March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, when people 45 years and older get screened for colon cancer.'This is the third most common diagnosed cancer in the United States. It's also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with 150,000 new cases per year. Also, typically, symptoms of colon cancer do not appear until the later stages. Therefore, routine screenings are recommended so we can diagnose earlier and improve outcomes, said Lisa Kim, APRN at The Queen's Medical Center. Ask A Specialist: Calcium Score Test All adults 45 and older should be screened for colorectal cancer, however, certain conditions may require earlier screening: If you have a close relative with colorectal polyps or cancer If you have certain genetic & intestinal conditions If in doubt, ask your doctor 'Previously, the recommended age for colon cancer screening was age 50. However, recent studies found that younger adults are getting colon cancer with more frequency, prompting a change in the screening age from 50 to 45 years old,' said Kim. There are several ways to get screened for colorectal cancer: 'Colonoscopy, which is the most familiar, where a gastroenterologist looks into the colon for polyps, which could develop into colon cancer. Other tests include a stool-based study as well as a non-invasive CT colonography. However, if any of these tests are positive, then we would highly recommend a colonoscopy,' said Kim. The Queen's Medical Center Punchbowl campus has an out-patient, comprehensive colon screening program. Just ask your primary care physician for a referral.
