Defence Ministry to discuss spy planes, air defence systems, sea mines in key acquisition meet
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): At a time when the Operation Sindoor is still on, the Defence Acquisition Council led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to meet this week to take up proposals worth over Rs one lakh crore for modernising the defence forces are expected to be taken up for clearance. The list of proposals worth over Rs one lakh crore for buying equipment for modernisation has been listed in the meeting agenda planned around end of this week, defence sources told ANI. To strengthen the air defence capabilities of the country, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-air missile system made by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would be taken up for clearance for the Indian Army. The project worth around Rs 30,000 crore, would be critical for the Indian Army's air defence capabilities as the system can be effective against targets up to 30 kms. The Indian Air Force would be putting up a proposal for buying three spy planes for keeping a track of enemy activities on the ground under the I-STAR programme. The Intelligence, Surveillance, Targetting and Reconnaissance aircraft would be critical for the Air Force's plans to take out ground targets in future, the sources said. The three aircraft would be acquired from an original equipment manufacturer and then be modified by the DRDO lab Centre for Airborne Systems in partnership with private partners. The Indian Navy would also be fielding a proposal for DRDO-developed Pressure-based Moored Mines at the meeting, which are to be used for targeting enemy submarines and surface ships. The project for upgrading the capabilities of the 84 Su-30MKI fighter jets is also expected to come up for discussion. The project has already been given the go-ahead by the DAC earlier. Underwater autonomous vessels are also scheduled to be taken up for clearance by the DAC, which would be meeting for the first time after the Operation Sindoor. The DAC is the highest body in the defence ministry for capital procurements for modernisation. (ANI)

Madurai district police introduce additional patrolling to curb crime
Madurai district police have introduced additional patrolling on arterial roads in the jurisdiction of their police stations that share border with Madurai city police. These four-wheeler patrols are in addition to the highway patrols and armed two-wheeler patrols already put in use to check incidents of crimes. 'We have studied the pattern of crime incidents reported in the last five years in the police stations bordering with Madurai city police limits and put these additional patrol vehicles on those select stretches of roads,' said Madurai Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind. The four patrol vehicles have been operating 24x7 in the areas like Tirumangalam, Perungudi, Alanganallur, Samayanallur, Oomachichikulam, Silaiman and Othakadai police station limits. An Inspector of Police said that these police stations have new residential areas which are thickly populated. 'These extension areas are easy targets for the criminals to strike at people and houses for snatching chains and burglary,' he added. The movement of the new patrol vehicle, with siren and flash lights, has only increased the visibility of police presence. This prevents the trouble-mongers to strike at their will. Since, these vehicles would be moving in the crime-prone areas already mapped by the district police, it makes the job tough for the criminals to strike at the soft targets. 'The police do enquire people who move in a suspicious manner in isolated areas,' he added. The movement of the patrol vehicles are also being monitored through GPS. The vehicles are assigned certain pockets which they need to touch every day. 'Their visits with the time along with GPS marking are reviewed regularly. In the event of any untoward incident reported in these mapped area, the movement of police personnel assigned to the particular area is taken up for enquiry,' the SP added. Armed policemen deployed on two-wheeler patrolling have been covering select routes under Alanganallur, Samayanallur, Silaiman, Karuppayorani, Asutinpatti and Perungudi police station limits. 'Their primary task is to keep a tab on rowdy elements and watch their movements,' said Mr. Arvind. With the police frequently knocking at their doors, the antisocial elements have a sense of fear that the they are under the watchful eyes of the police. Besides, Quick Reaction Team has been deployed on Vadipatti-Nagamalai Pudukottai highway to check crime incidences.
