India To Discuss Spy Planes, Air Defence Systems, Sea Mines In Key Acquisition Meet

India.com2 days ago
At a time when the Operation Sindoor is still on, the Defence Acquisition Council, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is scheduled to meet this week to take up proposals worth over Rs one lakh crore for modernising the defence forces are expected to be taken up for clearance.
The list of proposals worth over Rs one lakh crore for buying equipment for modernisation has been listed in the meeting agenda planned around the end of this week, defence sources told ANI.
To strengthen the air defence capabilities of the country, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-air missile system made by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would be taken up for clearance for the Indian Army.
The project, worth around Rs 30,000 crore, would be critical for the Indian Army's air defence capabilities as the system can be effective against targets up to 30 km.
The Indian Air Force would be putting up a proposal for buying three spy planes to keep a track of enemy activities on the ground under the I-STAR programme.
The Intelligence, Surveillance, Targetting and Reconnaissance aircraft would be critical for the Air Force's plans to take out ground targets in the future, the sources said.
The three aircraft would be acquired from an original equipment manufacturer and then be modified by the DRDO lab Centre for Airborne Systems in partnership with private partners.
The Indian Navy would also be fielding a proposal for DRDO-developed Pressure-based Moored Mines at the meeting, which are to be used for targeting enemy submarines and surface ships.
The project for upgrading the capabilities of the 84 Su-30MKI fighter jets is also expected to come up for discussion.
The project has already been given the go-ahead by the DAC earlier.
Underwater autonomous vessels are also scheduled to be taken up for clearance by the DAC, which would be meeting for the first time after the Operation Sindoor. The DAC is the highest body in the defence ministry for capital procurements for modernisation.

"Stepmotherly treatment": Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge slams Central government over pending relief funds to Himachal Pradesh

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday slammed the central government on the pending relief amount for Himachal Pradesh required during landslides and rainfall. In a post on social media X, Kharge wrote that the Himachal government had demanded a total relief package of Rs 9,000 crore. He further wrote that in 2023, the Congress had announced a total of Rs 4,500 crore to the state, while the Modi government only provided Rs 433 crore to the state, and called it a 'stepmotherly' treatment. 'Even before this year's rainfall, the Himachal government had demanded a total relief package of 9000 crore from the centre. In the 2023 tragedy, the Congress state government had released special assistance of 4500 crore, whereas the Modi government at the centre provided only 433 crore to the state,' he said 'Now, the Modi government has recently announced 2000 crore for 2023 in a hurry, and the BJP is busy taking credit for it, but the relief amount is still pending. This is the stepmotherly treatment of the BJP towards Himachal!! It is hoped that this time, instead of taking credit, the BJP will take action to provide help for the losses,' the post read. Kharge, in his post, demanded that the Central government release the pending disaster relief funds for Himachal Pradesh. He also expressed grief at the loss of lives in the state due to the heavy rainfall and landslides, stating that they were 'extremely distressing.' 'The news of loss of life and property due to heavy rainfall and landslides in Himachal Pradesh for the past several days is extremely distressing. The government and administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I appeal to Congress leaders and workers to provide every possible assistance to the public. We demand from the central government that the disaster relief funds pending for Himachal Pradesh for the past few years be released with immediate effect,' the post read. A total of 51 people have died while 22 others have been missing due to the torrential rains, flash floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh, according to the latest official data. (ANI)

"Congress wants 'tukde tukde' of Bharat": Poonawalla slams Ajoy Kumar for calling Sikkim a "neighbouring Country"

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Wednesday sharply criticised Congress leader Ajoy Kumar for referring to Sikkim as a foreign nation. Poonawalla alleged that the Congress advocates for 'tukde-tukde' (division) of India. Poonawalla described Kumar's remarks as an insult to Sikkim and the entire Northeast region. He accused Congress of longstanding hostility toward the Northeast. 'Today, the statement made by Ajoy Kumar that Sikkim is not an integral part of India and is, in fact, a neighbouring nation, shows how he has insulted not just Sikkim but the entire northeast. Congress has always been against the Northeast. We have seen they have bombed one of the states in the Northeast. They have said bye-bye to Assam in the 1960s,' Poonawalla told ANI. Taking a jibe at Congress, the BJP spokesperson said that they follow the 'footsteps of Jinnah.' 'Congress is following the footsteps of Jinnah. It is a 'Jinnahwadi' party. Just like Jinnah wanted that there should be an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat,' Shehzad Poonawalla said. The row began when addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Ajoy Kumar named Sikkim as one of the 'neighbouring nations' alongside Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, with whom India's relations have been spoiled. Meanwhile, Kumar shared an X post and apologised for his statement, calling it a slip of the tongue. Ajoy Kumar wrote, 'Yesterday in my press conference on 'SAIL 400 crore scam', when I was speaking on the deteriorating relations with our neighbouring countries, I accidentally took name of a state. For which I sincerely apologise as it was just a slip of tongue.' Further, he targeted the BJP and asked them to hold a press conference on the 'atrocities' in 'Amrit Kaal' rather than his 'human error'. 'I heard from a journalist friend that @BJP4India is planning to organise a press conference on this small human error. I want to ask BJP; 1. Why don't they do a press conference on the atrocities happening in this 'AmritKaal'? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference,' the X post read. He questioned the BJP over the alleged SAIL scam of Rs 400 crore. '2. Why don't they do a press conference on SAIL's Rs 400 crore scam? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference. 3. Why don't they do a press conference on what is the relation between Ekta Aggarwal, the promoter of VIPPL company, which was the main cause of SAIL's loss of Rs 400 crore, with BJP? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference,' Kumar added. '4. Why don't they do a press conference on the BJP MLA who beat up a passenger in the Vande Bharat train and the BJP MLA who slapped the SDM? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference. BJP will never do a press conference on the major issues the country is going through, but instead looks out for small mistakes of the opposition leaders,' the X post read. (ANI)
