Bengaluru stampede: Leader of Opposition R Ashok demands emergency assembly session

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 15 (ANI): Karnataka Leader of Opposition (LoP) R Ashok has urged the state government to convene an emergency session of the legislature to discuss the stampede tragedy at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Ashok highlighted that the incident has raised serious questions about public safety, crowd control, and the organisation of sports and other events. The tragedy has caused anxiety and concern among the public and alleged that lapses in administration, the government's actions post-incident, and attempts to shield influential individuals have led to widespread doubts, said a statement. Ashok claimed that three separate investigations are being conducted to conceal the truth, and helpless officials are being scapegoated, as per public discussions. He emphasised the need for a comprehensive discussion on measures to prevent such incidents in the future, proposing a three-day emergency session. The session should address a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the stampede, strengthening crowd control and safety measures at public events, ensuring proper treatment for the injured, providing compensation to affected families, and outlining the state government's plans to avoid such incidents in the future. Ashok stated that the emergency session would demonstrate the state government's commitment to the public and help implement appropriate measures based on lessons learned from the tragedy. He also urged the government to disclose the causes of the incident to the public and take legal action against those responsible. Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL). Following the incident, the Karnataka government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka Assembly LoP accuses Congress Govt of ignoring police instructions

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Karnataka Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) R Ashok on Sunday accused the Congress government in the State of disregarding police instructions, leading to the stampede tragedy outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB cricket team's IPL victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives. Addressing a press conference, Ashok alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar were more focused on their political power struggle than ensuring public safety. 'Had they acted responsibly, innocent students would not have lost their lives,' he said. Ashok claimed that the police had informed the government about the first fatality by noon, yet the RCB event continued despite eight children already being dead. 'These leaders have hearts of stone,' he charged. Ashok alleged that the Vidhana Soudha police had written to the Chief Secretary on June 4, warning that the event was hastily organised and security arrangements were inadequate due to staff shortages. The police had even recommended cancelling the event. 'While the Speaker suspended 18 BJP MLAs citing rule violations, the government itself has broken the law,' Ashok said. Ashok also criticised the Chief Minister for claiming the event was not a government program despite official orders stating otherwise. Ashok expressed outrage over the suspension of police officers managing traffic and station duties, while no action was taken against government officials. He demanded a special legislative session to discuss the stampede and called for a High Court-monitored probe. 'Three inquiries have been ordered, but which one is genuine?' he questioned. Asserting that the government should own up to its failures, Ashok said, 'If they are not guilty, they must provide Rs1 crore compensation to each victim's family.' He also announced that BJP legislators would donate one month's salary to the affected families. Taking a dig at the Chief Minister, Ashok said, 'Winning trophies is not new, but no other state has seen such negligence for publicity.' The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition parties and civil society demanding accountability from the government. (ANI)

'The real culprits are the Chief Minister, the Deputy CM, and the Home Minister. All three should resign. This is the demand of the entire state,' said Prabhu Bhamla Chavan while addressing the media. He further alleged that the suspended police officers were being made scapegoats. 'They are being sacrificed to shield the ministers. We say—don't offer compensation. Instead, take moral responsibility and resign,' he added. The event was organised in haste and without proper planning, resulting in the loss of 11 innocent lives. Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar must step down,' Ashok said. He also demanded that the compensation for each deceased person be raised to ₹1 crore. The BJP's protest comes days after a stampede occurred outside the stadium on June 4, where tens of thousands of fans gathered to witness the felicitation ceremony of RCB players after their IPL 2025 win. "Great Bengaluru has become bad Bengaluru now," says BJP's R Ashoka after heavy rainfall

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 20 (ANI): Severe waterlogging disrupted daily life across several parts of Bengaluru on Tuesday after heavy rainfall lashed the city, with BJP leaders criticising the Congress-led Karnataka government over its handling of the situation. BJP leader and Assembly LoP R Ashoka says, 'Congress people are calling it Great Bengaluru, brand Bengaluru, but it has become bad Bengaluru now.' Speaking to ANI, LoP R Ashok said, 'Congress people are calling it Great Bengaluru, brand Bengaluru, but it has become bad Bengaluru now. 5 people have died today in Bengaluru, and this is a shame that Congress is doing a rally...' Similarly, BY Vijayendra lashed out at the government's priorities during the civic crisis. 'Siddaramaiah's government has become so insensitive. When the people are worst affected due to the rains from the last two days in Bengaluru, the state government is busy celebrating the completion of two years of the government,' he said. Vijayendra further added, 'CM and the deputy CM keep talking about the greater Bengaluru, but keep talking about it, won't help. All the contractors' payments have stopped, and the work has also stopped....' Visuals from Shanti Nagar and the BMTC bus depot showed flooded streets and disrupted local transport as rainwater entered both residential and commercial areas. Meanwhile, LoP Karnataka Legislative Council & BJP leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy visited and inspected rain-affected areas and told ANI,' What is the celebration (on completion of two years of Congress govt in Karnataka) for? There has been no development at all in the last two years. DK Shivakumar says that even if God comes, Bengaluru can't be saved.' 'Five people have died during this rainfall. What is this? The public is upset. Rainwater has entered people's houses, yet the government is not serious. This is the condition of the Congress Rome caught fire, its king was sitting with a violin,' he added. Other areas, including Shanti Nagar bus stands and Kanteerava Stadium, also faced problems due to heavy rains. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, disrupting daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several areas across Karnataka, including Bengaluru. More rain is expected in the next two days, bracing the city for further disruption. Authorities are working to mitigate the impact of the waterlogging. (ANI)
