How to avoid aches and pains while driving: 5 tips revealed
It comes as research from Cazoo found that 57% of drivers surveyed say they suffer from 'Repetitive Driving Strain' (RDS). This is pain in areas such as their back, neck, shoulders and hips while driving. To help them out, Helen O'Leary, director and physiotherapist at Complete Pilates, has teamed up with Cazoo. Together, they have created a driver-friendly car guide on how drivers can best position themselves when driving, to avoid aches and pains. How to avoid aches and pains while driving Adjusting your seat It's important to if you're driving a shared car to adjust the seat so it bests fits you when you're behind the wheel. Helen explains: "First of all, you need to ensure that the seat is not pressing against the back of your knees - many cars allow you to lengthen or shorten the seat to achieve this. "Seat height is also key - you should be sitting upright, similarly to in a desk chair. "Finally, when thinking about the steering wheel height, you should ensure that your arms are slightly bent. "Most modern cars allow you to adjust the seat exactly, so ensure you take time to set it correctly before each drive.' Lumbar support Supporting your spine is the most effective way to avoid RDS, which can be done fairly easily. Helen says: "The easiest way to do this in a car is getting Lumbar support, or finding a way to support your lower back - for example through a cushion. "Ensuring you have enough support in your lower back will help you sit up straight without overextending.' Cruise control If you have the option for cruise control in your car, then that can help reduce RDS. Helen explains: "This feature can be incredibly useful for preventing pain. Having a car with cruise control means that you can take your foot off the gas and therefore not work your foot and ankle muscles constantly. "This will help reduce the chances of a sore and tired foot and ankle, particularly those muscles at the front of your shin.' Cars with options for this include a Volkswagen ID5, and a Ford Mustang Mach E. Take breaks It's important to take breaks from driving to give your body a chance to move and lubricate its own parts. Recommended reading: Helen adds: "It is also worth taking time to stretch in this break, as it can help to prevent any further stiffness'. Staying flexible beyond the car It is important to maintain a good strength and flexibility routine to aid recovery after long drives. Exercises Helen recommends include back extension, Reverse Nordics, sumo squat, high step up and book openings.

Palayam market revamp: Eviction nears completion
T'puram: With around 90% of traders now evicted from Connemara Market at Palayam, city corporation has cleared way for the long-delayed Rs 55 crore market redevelopment. The civic body, working with Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), is in active talks with contractor RDS Projects Ltd, which expressed interest earlier in pulling out, citing cost escalations and demolition delays. The construction work is likely to begin in Aug. Originally awarded the project in 2020, the redevelopment and retention of the market's iconic heritage gate encountered repeated setbacks. Demolition of around 70% of the old stalls was stalled due to protests and regulatory hurdles. A temporary steel-block facility built behind the market now houses roughly 460 vendors, although many still lack power, sanitation, or finalized stall allotments. The situation escalated earlier this month when around 25 operational shops were razed with police assistance, triggering strong objections from trader groups and claims of high court violations. In mid-June, the corporation issued a two-day eviction ultimatum, prompting negotiations with stallholders to shift goods. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S, coordinating the relocation push, commented on the impasse: "We are in constant dialogue with RDS and Smart City officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Our aim is to ensure all traders are properly moved within a week and to officially restart renovation within this financial year." He acknowledged the difficulties faced by fish vendors and stall owners but stressed that the project's success hinges on completing the phased relocation. Source documents reveal the corporation plans to finalize vendor stall assignments, complete power and sanitation hookups and convene a joint board meeting with SCTL and RDS within days. RDS Projects has officially flagged rising costs in cement and steel, as much as Rs 3,000–3,500 per tonne for steel and Rs 80–100 per cement bag, as key concerns, prompting fresh negotiations. Smart City officials have reportedly asked the finance department for exemptions to allow cost escalation, even as tender terms remain rigid. Despite the stalls, civic leaders are determined. The new four-storey complex, designed for enhanced safety, hygiene and foot traffic, will preserve the market's historic frontage.

Ali Keating reveals 'delight' at taking reigns of mum's horse
Showjumper Ali Keating said she is 'delighted' to be taking the reins of her mother's prized pony as she gears up for the Dublin Horse Show. Ali, 19, the youngest daughter of Ronan and Yvonne Keating, was speaking as she prepares to appear at the RDS on her mother's 'favourite child' Captain next month. She told 'This is my third year competing in the Dublin Horse Show. I first did it when I was 12 or 13, then I was in it in 2023, and I am back again this year with Captain. Ali Keating. Pic: Evan Doherty 'Captain is mom's horse. We got Captain in 2022 for mom, and then I just took over the reins a little bit to compete with him.' An accomplished rider herself, Yvonne now prefers trotting out on her pony in the countryside rather than entering the competitive showjumping arena. 'Mom gets to ride Captain out in the winter, which she prefers. So it is lovely for me to be able to take over the reins from her,' added Ali 'Captain is special, just because he's mom's horse, he's like the miracle child. He's the favourite child,' she laughed. 'Like me, Missy and Jack, we don't get a look in. Captain is mom's baby. Ali Keating. Pic: Evan Doherty 'So to get to show him and to get to jump him is incredible.' Ali said excitement is building in the Keating household ahead of the RDS Horse Show, which takes place this year between August 6 and August 10. 'It's very exciting. It's what we all look forward to. I mean, I'm not looking forward to going on holiday; I'm just looking forward to Horse Show week. And because it's every year, we get to see everyone there, and the whole equestrian community comes together.' In addition to preparing for the prestigious equestrian event, Ali is also preparing to enter her third year at Maynooth University, where she studies psychology and criminology. 'I am probably looking more into the sports psychology side of it, dealing with the riders, because it is a very mentally and physically draining sport. 'There are such highs, but there are also extreme lows. It is blood, sweat and tears. I've seen it myself first-hand – what it can take to get out here on those days when you just feel like you're wondering why you're even doing it. 'You're questioning the early mornings, the late nights, the freezing cold, the rain. But then, you know, you come to the Dublin Horse Show. 'We spend money and time and do everything for the horses. And it can all come crumbling down within a few hours. It is mentally a tough sport, but we all love it, and that's why we're all still doing it.'
