Accountant loses RM122,700 in elaborate police impersonation phone scam
PONTIAN: A 33-year-old accountant lost RM122,700 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate impersonating courier service staff and police officers. The victim lodged a report yesterday, claiming she had been duped in a well-orchestrated scam that began with a call from someone claiming to be an employee of a popular courier service. District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the suspect told the victim that a suspicious package under her name had been intercepted, allegedly containing bank savings account books and ATM tokens. "When the victim denied any involvement nor had any knowledge of the package, the call was transferred to a man posing as a police officer from the Perlis police contingent headquarters," Shofee said "He claimed her name was listed on the police's wanted list. Believing the claim, the victim followed the scammer's instructions. "Between June 18 and July 11, She made eight online bank transfers into four bank accounts amounting to RM122,700 between June 18 and July 11. " The payments were supposedly for clearing her name from the 'wanted list'," Shofee said in a statement today. She only realised she had been scammed after failing to reach both the imposters. The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping, and a fine. Shofee urged the public to remain vigilant and to verify any suspicious calls, especially those involving alleged criminal investigations or courier-related claims. For scam-related enquiries or verification, the public may contact the National Scam Response Centre via 997, check mule accounts using the "Semak Mule" portal, or download the 'Whoscall' app for caller identification.

Barcelona sign keeper Garcia from rivals Espanyol
BARCELONA: Barcelona have signed goalkeeper Joan Garcia from local rivals Espanyol on a six-year contract, the La Liga champions said today after they met the Spaniard's release clause. Espanyol said Garcia's €25 million (RM122 million) release clause had been activated, ending his stint at the club he had been with since he was a 15-year-old. The Spain youth international also posted a video saying farewell to the fans. The 24-year-old made more saves (146) than any other keeper in the 2024-25 La Liga season while he was also one of just two players to play every minute of the campaign, along with Getafe keeper David Soria. Garcia will provide competition for places in goal with German Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who missed most of the season due to knee surgery. The club had to coax Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement and the Polish keeper made 30 appearances in their domestic treble-winning campaign. While Barcelona topped the standings, Espanyol finished 14th, losing both home and away to Hansi Flick's side. - REUTERS

Cameron Highlands' Traffic Mess: Grand New Roads Planned, But Still No Parking In Sight
Subscribe to our FREE A new chapter in the ongoing traffic saga is unfolding in the misty heights of Cameron Highlands. The recently unveiled comprehensive road development project, which will span from 2025 to 2029, has reignited debates about the effectiveness of infrastructure solutions in this environmentally sensitive tourist hotspot. It came in the wake of last year's That project, announced by Pahang Local Government chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff, focused on upgrading the McDonald's roundabout to the Brinchang junction stretch and implementing a one-way system at Kea Farm. The New Master Plan The newly proposed project is significantly more ambitious in scope. Major infrastructure works: 3.3km new two-lane road from Royal Lily to Golf Course Dual carriageway expansions across multiple sections One-way loop systems near Padang Golf Four bridge replacements on FT59 and FT434 2km four-lane expansion from Time Tunnel to Kea Farm An additional 1km four-lane expansion to Section 70.8 Supporting infrastructure: Pedestrian walkways and motorcycle shelters Street lighting improvements Drainage systems Geotechnical works Environmental protection measures Project Timeline: Planning phase: December 2024 – September 2026 Construction: September 2026 – March 2029 Total duration: 4.25 years A detailed project timeline document reveals Cameron Highlands' ambitious road expansion plan from 2024 to 2029. (Pix: REACH) Road Plan Misses the Parking Plot While the extensive road works might appear impressive on paper, community leaders argue that the fundamental problem remains unaddressed: insufficient parking at key tourist spots like Kea Farm. Regional Environmental Awareness for Cameron Highlands (REACH) president Dilip Martin emphasises, 'It's deeply disappointing that authorities continue to propose elaborate road networks while overlooking the basic need for adequate parking facilities.' While included in the scope, the project's environmental protection measures have done little to allay fears about its impact on the highland ecosystem. The extended construction period of nearly four years raises additional concerns about prolonged environmental stress on this fragile environment. A Google Map image shows the proposed loop road route (marked in green) around a densely forested area, highlighting the environmental impact concerns raised by locals. (Pix: REACH) Are Simpler Solutions Being Overlooked? REACH's alternative proposal remains straightforward and potentially more effective: Multi-story parking facilities at key tourist locations Covered pedestrian bridges Enhanced public transport options While the total project cost hasn't been officially announced, the extensive scope suggests a significant increase from the previous RM122 million allocation. This raises questions about value for money and whether simpler, more targeted solutions might better serve the community's needs. Local businesses and residents would also face the prospect of nearly four years of construction-related disruptions. Hence, the question remains whether the end result justifies the extended inconvenience and environmental impact. An aerial drone shot reveals extensive earthworks and land clearing operations in Cameron Highlands. As development continues to push against forest boundaries, each new project potentially adds to the region's notorious traffic problems. (Pix: Fernando Fong) Four Years, Multiple Road Expansions, and Millions In Spending As Cameron Highlands stands at this crucial juncture, the debate continues about whether to pursue extensive infrastructure development or more focused, immediate solutions. While the authorities proceed with their comprehensive road development plan, the community's call for simpler, more direct solutions to the parking crisis continues to echo through the highland valleys. The success of this massive undertaking will ultimately be judged not just by its completion but by its actual effectiveness in solving the region's persistent traffic and tourism challenges. As construction begins in late 2026, only time will tell if this elaborate solution will finally bring relief to Cameron Highlands' long-standing traffic woes. Heineken Malaysia delivers steady quarterly performance
PETALING JAYA: Heineken Malaysia Bhd delivered steady performance and sustained its momentum in a dynamic market landscape in the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (Q1'25). In the first quarter, the group experienced a slight decline in revenue by 3% compared to the same quarter in 2024. The decrease is primarily influenced by the timing of Chinese New Year (CNY), with this year's festive period occurring in January, resulting in an earlier sell-in activity that took place in the fourth quarter of last year. Despite the slight decline in revenue in Q1'25, the group maintained steady profit before tax (PBT) of RM161 million and net profit of RM122 million, demonstrating strength and stability. Managing director Martijn van Keulen (pix) said, 'Our performance this quarter was impacted by an earlier CNY and post-festive demand normalisation. We are resilient in maintaining our profitability, and it reflects our disciplined cost management and focus on financial efficiency. As we build momentum for 2025, we will continue our growth journey through our EverGreen strategy. This strategy is anchored on driving superior growth with a cost-conscious mindset, catering to evolving consumer preferences, embedding sustainability into our operations, investing in becoming the best-connected brewer, and most importantly, unlocking the potential of our people.' On outlook, Martijn shared, 'As we move forward, we anticipate that consumer sentiment will be shaped by inflationary pressures and ongoing global economic uncertainties, particularly those arising from tariff-related issues and escalating geopolitical trade tensions, which could impact consumer confidence and spending patterns. Nevertheless, we will continue to navigate the dynamic landscape with agility, driving topline growth through targeted commercial initiatives while maintaining disciplined cost control and operational efficiency to sustain healthy margins. We will continue to future-proof the business, as we execute our EverGreen strategy in navigating the evolving external environment.' The board of directors does not recommend any dividend in respect of the quarter ended. In 2024, the group paid RM1.45 billion in taxes, representing 52% of its total revenue. The excise duty is one of the highest in the world. This highlights Heineken Malaysia's contribution to the economy and creating value for the country and its people. The group applauds the government's decision to maintain excise duties on beers in Budget 2025, as any hike in excise rates will drive greater demand for illicit alcohol. Heineken Malaysia regards illicit alcohol as a serious issue and remains committed to supporting the government in mitigating illicit trade through holistic efforts, including enforcement collaboration and raising greater awareness in the market.
