Ahmad Aslam: Polygamy is hard when you are young
Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ, and R. ARAVINTHAN I LUENCER Ahmad Aslam admitted that polygamy is difficult for him at a young age, Berita Harian reported. Aslam, whose full name is Ahmad Aslam Kasyfun Nazir Rashid, 25, said this was because he had to please many people. He sparked controversy when he married two women, one of whom was Marissa Dania, the daughter of actor Norman Hakim and ex-wife Abby Abadi. 'It's difficult, actually quite difficult. I can't comment further and in detail. I'm worried that this matter involves the sensitivities of many people,' he said at an event recently. Aslam married his first wife, Umisya Mazlan, in July 2020. The couple divorced in September 2023, before reconciling later. They have three children. He married Marissa in Songkhla, Thailand, on Dec 27, 2023. Aslam revealed that many of his followers asked him for advice on living a polygamous life each time when he went live on social media. > Residents of Pulau Aur near Mersing, Johor, are appealing for a free boat service to the island, Kosmo! reported. Most of them are forced to fork out at least RM220 each for the service presently. Hatasa Rabudin, 40, who lives in Mersing town, said the high cost of travel prevents him from visiting his mother, who resides on the island, more frequently. 'During the festive period, we have to fork out up to RM7,000 just to rent a ferry, which is shared with relatives who want to head back to the island,' he said. Kampung Pulau Aur Village Safety and Development Committee chairman Sabinah Md Salleh said the request for free boat service was justified as many were dependent on micro agriculture and seafood business. Finding soft landing amid hard times
PETALING JAYA: Azman Mohamed Asmayatim, 38, was among staff of a Malay daily who accepted a Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) in 2018. Little did he know, the move would set him on an unexpected entrepreneurial path. 'When the opportunity to take VSS arose at my previous workplace, I didn't have much choice as there were only two photographers at the Penang bureau. One more senior colleague turned down the offer and as a result, I had to accept it. 'My company didn't offer a lump sum payment. Instead, they paid it like a salary. Then, due to financial issues, the payments were delayed. However in 2023, they finally settled the outstanding payments,' Azman said in a phone interview with theSun. Despite the setback, Azman was determined to make the most of his situation. Equipped with a degree in photography and digital studies, he had honed his graphic design skills through freelance work while in the media industry. Having a passion for business, he started a home-based printing business designing T-shirt and personalised name stickers. 'I only took on small jobs such as schoolbook name stickers. The income was enough to sustain my small family. But when the pandemic hit, my supplier shut down, which impacted my business. To make ends meet, I worked with a vehicle insurance agent shop for a year.' Later, his former employer offered his old job back to him, but he would have to relocate to Kuala Lumpur. 'With a newborn son who needed extra care due to health issues at the time, I had no choice but to decline the offer and remain in Taiping, where my family had settled.' The economic landscape was challenging post-pandemic, with limited job opportunities. But Azman found hope through the North Corridor Economic Region (NCER), which hosted several entrepreneurial programmes. Through one of these initiatives, he secured a photography gig on a project basis. But in 2023, the NCER office near his home shut down, leaving him once again struggling to find work in Taiping. 'I was already in my mid-30s then.' As he and his wife welcomed their second child, Azman made the decision to pivot. 'I knew I had to come up with a new business plan to support my growing family.' The turning point came when he chanced upon a soy milk and tofu-making class, popularly known as 'taufufa', which cost RM220. 'I learned about the class through a friend's WhatsApp post. After thinking it over for a few days, I decided to give it a try. The one-day class taught participants how to make soy milk and tofu. 'It wasn't easy at all. I had to spend a lot of time researching and developing the right consistency of tofu that I felt confident would be marketable,' he said, adding that he attended the class in October 2024 and began making tofu at home within two weeks. His first five attempts failed, the tofu was too soft, and the texture was off. But by the sixth try, he struck gold. Now, seven months into the business, Azman runs a roadside stall in Kampung Boyan, Taiping, where his brown sugar syrup is a customer favourite. 'Many of my customers prefer to have soy milk with brown sugar syrup.' Azman said although the love of photography remains close to his heart, he is now fully focused on his taufufa business, adding that he hopes to scale up his operations someday. 'I hope to supply soy milk and taufufa to other businesses in the district. 'Although my income is a bit lower than what I used to make, I am happy.'

Tan Chong falls 8.0pct before settling flat at midday
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd's share price dipped as much as 8.0 per cent in the morning session, before recovering to trade flat at 79 sen by the midday break. The stock touched an intraday low of 72.5 sen, retracing gains from Wednesday's close of 79 sen. It emerged as one of the most actively traded counters, with 19.56 million shares changing hands. The volatility followed an unusual market activity query by Bursa Malaysia yesterday, after the stock surged 44 per cent or 25.5 sen to 83.5 sen from 58 sen on Tuesday. RHB Research said Wednesday's rally reflected a shift in market sentiment, prompting the firm to upgrade its call on the stock to "Buy" from "Sell", with a significantly higher target price of RM1.12 from 27 sen previously. The firm said the market started to relook at Tan Chong from an underlying asset angle following an unexpected land sale on July 10. Tan Chong sold 1.30 hectares along Jalan Putra for RM148.8 million following the first land sale to Avaland Bhd in Petaling Jaya earlier this month for RM49 million. The total gain on disposal for these lands is expected to be between RM15 million and RM18 million with both deals transacted between RM518 per square feet and RM1,067 per sq ft. RHB Research said Tan Chong owns around 5.67-hectare non-manufacturing land - including showrooms, storage and service centres - across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor, based on its latest annual report. "Assuming market values of RM250-RM1,050 per sq ft, we estimate these lands could be worth RM220 million, roughly 40 per cent of Tan Chong Motor's market capitalisation. "More importantly, the group does not disclose its exhaustive list of assets. "Hence, there may be other smaller properties that might not be used for its automotive business but are suitable for redevelopment, such as the recent land disposal was not included in the Top 10 largest properties, implying more assets to be potentially realised," the firm added. RHB Research said Tan Chong still retains its traditional automotive model of owing the distribution network, which includes showrooms/properties vis-à-vis the current agency distribution model. The firm said there may be incentives for Tan Chong to resize its business model by selling some of their showrooms as Nissan's market share has fallen from six per cent of TIV in 2010 to one per cent in 2024. The group operates around 50-60 branches, of which 20-30 per cent are based in Kuala Lumpur.
