Drug trafficking syndicates busted in Johor, Penang

JOHOR BAHRU: Police have crippled two drug trafficking syndicates operating in Johor and Penang, arresting five individuals and seizing various narcotics worth over RM3.6 million. According to a Bernama report, Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said three suspects, a local man and two Vietnamese women, aged between 32 and 39, were detained in a series of special operations carried out by the Johor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and South Johor Bahru district police on Thursday and Friday. He said the syndicate, believed to be active since April last year, used gated and guarded residences to store and process drugs for distribution to the local market. The investigation began with the arrest of a local man by the roadside, which led police to a rented room in a shophouse in Johor Bahru. The suspect later led police to three luxury condominium units also rented by him, where more drugs were found and the two foreign women were arrested. 'Police seized 20.7kg of powder suspected to be ecstasy, 18.49kg of ganja, 154.25g of ketamine and 141g of Erimin-5 pills. We also confiscated various drug processing and repackaging equipment, as well as RM800 cash.' He added that trafficking trends suggest a shift towards ganja flowers. 'This may be because ganja flowers have a higher hallucinogenic effect due to their purity, besides being more expensive, with an estimated market value of RM36,000 per kilogramme.' All suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and are on remand until Thursday. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In Penang, police arrested a 25-year-old local man and a 20-year-old foreign woman during a raid in the Pulau Tikus and Tanjong Tokong areas on Thursday. Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the raid, conducted by the district's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division at 9.30pm, led to the seizure of 15 compressed packets of dried leaves believed to be ganja. 'The drugs are estimated to weigh 8.2kg and are worth RM25,420. They are sufficient for about 16,400 doses,' he said in a statement. He added that the value of the drugs and other confiscated items was estimated at RM46,890.50. 'Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been active since early this year and was targeting the local market,' he said. Preliminary urine tests showed that the male suspect tested positive for benzodiazepines. He also has four criminal records. The female suspect tested negative and has no prior record. Both have been remanded for seven days to assist investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Abdul Rozak said police would continue intensifying operations against drug syndicates. 'We plan to strengthen cooperation with other agencies through information sharing and a holistic approach to address drug distribution.' Those with information on drug activities are urged to contact the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department at 012-208 7222.

MIRI (July 13): A total of 14 parks and recreational projects have been implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) for the Pujut constituency between 2022 and 2024, amounting to RM3.6 million, said its assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii. He added that the development of parks and recreational area had been one of his key priorities since taking office as an assemblyman, in efforts to promote healthy living and enhance community well-being. 'Parks and recreation are very important because we need to provide space for residents to exercise and relax,' he said. He emphasised that particular attention had been given to ensuring neighbourhoods in his constituency are equipped with recreational spaces for the benefit of the residents. Yii made the remarks during a briefing session and Minor Rural Project (MRP) handing-over ceremony, held at the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Pujut service centre yesterday. The projects, according to him, are located across three key zones in the constituency: Pujut, Piasau and Krokop. 'Sub-areas include Pujut Adong, Piasau Utara, Piasau Garden, Piasau Jaya, and several smaller areas within Krokop. 'For the Krokop area, the projects include Krokop Jaya basketball court, Krokop Yakin basketball court, and Krokop Rock Garden.' Yii noted that only two projects were implemented within the Pujut area due to a shortage of available state land for development. 'While most of the projects have been completed, there are projects that will proceed for second and third phases,' he added. During the event, Yii also presented the Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds totalling RM89,000 to various associations. SRC International meant for rakyat but Najib benefited, court told

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court was told that SRC International Sdn Bhd, initially intended to serve the public, was instead exploited to benefit former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Lawyer Datuk Lim Chee Wee, representing SRC International, argued that the company became both a vehicle and victim of large-scale fraud, with Najib as the primary beneficiary. The civil suit involves US$1.18 billion in losses, with Najib accused of personally receiving US$120 million and RM42 million from misappropriated Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP) pension funds. Lim stated, 'The very funds misappropriated through SRC were pensioners' money from KWAP. While SRC International suffered a devastating loss of US$1.18 billion, the first defendant (Najib) personally received US$120 million into his own accounts.' Najib allegedly acted as a shadow director, controlling key decisions through shareholder resolutions, including approving a RM4 billion KWAP loan and disbursing RM3.6 billion for illegitimate purposes. Lim added, 'He utilised his role as the shadow director of the company, where he controlled the company's board via shareholder resolutions on important macro-decisions.' SRC International, under new management, filed the suit in May 2021, accusing Najib of breach of trust, abuse of power, and misappropriation of funds. The company seeks a court declaration holding Najib accountable for losses and demands repayment of RM42 million. Najib is currently serving a six-year prison term for the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC funds, following a reduced sentence from the Pardons Board in January 2024. – Bernama

Najib orchestrated SRC fraud for personal gain, court told

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak was the primary beneficiary in a large-scale fraud involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, the High Court heard today. Lawyer Datuk Lim Chee Wee said SRC International, formerly a 1MDB subsidiary, was exploited by the former prime minister for personal gain, straying from its public-interest mandate. He said this in his submissions during the hearing of SRC International's suit against Najib and former chief executive Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil to recover US$1.18 billion in damages. Nik Faisal, who is wanted in connection with the RM42 million SRC probe, was last traced to Hong Kong in 2020. "Although SRC International suffered massive losses amounting to US$1.18 billion, the first defendant (Najib) received US$120 million into his account and another RM42 million, which is the subject of another separate suit. "He also acted as a shadow director of the company, controlling the board through shareholder resolutions relating to key macro decisions, which should have been made by the company's board. "Najib signed shareholder resolutions to approve and secure a RM4 billion loan from Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan), or KWAP, and spent RM3.6 billion of that on unlawful purposes. "This makes Najib the main architect behind the substantial loss of US$1.18 billion," he said. A shadow director refers to an individual who, though not formally appointed as a director, exerts significant influence over the company's board and its decisions. The lawyer said Najib gave inconsistent explanations, offering five versions when questioned about the US$120 million SRC International funds credited into his personal bank account. Lim said Najib denied receiving money from the company's funds, instead claiming it was a donation and insisting the account was not managed by him personally but was for corporate social responsibility (CSR). He submitted that Najib abused his public office by, among other things, securing two loans worth RM2 billion and two government guarantees without conducting due diligence or feasibility studies for a company he himself described as "a new company with no track record". He said the loans suffered repayment defaults that Najib attempted to conceal by approving several short-term loans to SRC to avoid default, without any inquiry into repayment capability. On May 7, 2021, SRC International filed a civil suit against Najib and Nik Faisal seeking US$1.18 billion in damages. In the suit, former SRC director Datuk Suboh Md Yassin was named as a third-party respondent along with other former directors, including Tan Sri Ismee Ismail, Datuk Mohamed Azhar Osman Khairuddin, Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi and Datuk Che Abdullah @ Rashidi Che Omar. The company alleges both defendants conspired and committed breaches of trust, and that Najib abused his powers and gained personal rewards from its funds, in addition to misappropriating them. The company is seeking a declaration that all defendants are liable to pay for the investment fund's losses arising from the use of the loans, as well as general, exemplary and aggravated damages, interest, costs, and any other relief the court deems fit. The hearing before judge Datuk Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin continues tomorrow.

SRC International Meant For Rakyat, But Najib Benefitted- Lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The High Court here was told today that although SRC International Sdn Bhd was intended to serve the rakyat, in reality, it was used to benefit Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Lawyer Datuk Lim Chee Wee, representing the company, submitted that instead of fulfilling its intended public purpose, SRC International became both a vehicle and a victim of large-scale fraud, with the former premier as its primary beneficiary. He was submitting during the hearing of SRC International's US$1.18 billion civil suit against Najib and former SRC chief executive officer Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, who is currently at large. 'The very funds misappropriated through SRC were pensioners' money from the Retirement Fund Inc (KWAP). While SRC International suffered a devastating loss of US$1.18 billion, the first defendant (Najib) personally received US$120 million into his own accounts and RM42 million, which is the subject of a separate suit. 'He also utilised his role as the shadow director of the company, where he controlled the company's board via shareholder resolutions on important macro-decisions that ought to have been made by the SRC board itself,' said the lawyer. Lim further said that, as the shadow director of the company, Najib signed shareholder resolutions to approve and obtain the RM4 billion of the KWAP loan and to disburse RM3.6 billion from that loan for illegitimate purposes. 'This culminated in Najib being the ultimate mastermind behind the catastrophic loss of US$1.18 billion,' he said this before Judge Datuk Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin. The hearing continues tomorrow. In May 2021, SRC, under its new management, filed the suit, claiming that Najib had committed a breach of trust and power abuse, personally benefitted from the company's funds, and misappropriated the said funds. It also seeks a court declaration that Najib is responsible for the company's losses due to his breach of duties and trust and for Najib to pay back the RM42 million in losses that they have suffered.
