Investment agent in the dock over lewd pics of hubby's second wife

MELAKA: An investment agent in a polygamous marriage has claimed trial to charges of distributing, threatening and possessing obscene images of her husband's second wife. Herni Sofini Omar, 53, entered a plea of not guilty after the three charges were read to her before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani in Ayer Keroh on Wednesday (July 2). She is charged with intending to insult the modesty of a 45-year-old woman by distributing obscene images via the post. The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. The accused was also charged under Section 507 of the Penal Code for issuing a criminal threat to the same woman via a letter that concealed the identity of the sender. The offence carries a prison term of up to two years, in addition to any other punishment provided under Section 506 of the Penal Code, if convicted. All the offences were alleged to have been committed at about 2pm at a house on Jalan Meranti 3 in Taman Sayang Selasih here on March 27. The accused also faces a prison term of up to three years, a fine, or both, if convicted under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possessing obscene images of the same woman on her mobile phone. The offence was discovered at about 3am on June 2 at the criminal investigation officer's office in Melaka Tengah district police headquarters here. Deputy public prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib proposed bail of RM8,000 for each charge. Baharudin Baharim, representing the accused, appealed for bail of RM4,000 for all charges because his client had no fixed income, recently underwent surgery for cancer, and was abandoned by her husband over the case. The court set bail at RM5,000 for all charges and fixed Aug 6 for next mention of the case.

Over 1,100 wild animals seized in crackdown on poaching and trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,118 wild animals were seized through Op Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK) by the federal police Wildlife Crime Control Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) throughout 2023 and this year. A spokesman from the bureau said the seizures involved various species believed to be illegally traded or used in illegal hunting activities. "A total of 735 animals were seized in 2023, with a seizure value of RM8,087,100, while in 2024, a total of 383 animals were seized, valued at RM6,309,290.20," he said. He said that over the two-year period, a total of 89 people had been arrested, comprising 71 men and 18 women, comprising locals and foreigners from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Vietnam. "In 2023, the arrests involved 34 men and five women, including Malaysians and seven Indonesians, while the following year saw the arrests of 28 men and 10 local women, along with several foreigners. "Among the items seized were five firearm barrels, 78 rounds of ammunition, and 30 cages believed to be used in hunting and wildlife trafficking," he said. He said statistics showed that wildlife poaching and smuggling activities remain rampant and have not shown any signs of decline. "We believe many of these cases are orchestrated by local residents who rely on forest products as a source of illegal income. "Operations will be intensified with the cooperation of various enforcement agencies to ensure that national treasures are not further looted by syndicates and poachers. "The WCB/PSK Bureau will continue to play a role in identifying syndicate networks and taking strict action against those involved," he added.

Youths urged to tap into Malaysia's booming pineapple industry

JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) is encouraging young entrepreneurs to explore the thriving pineapple industry, which promises substantial economic returns and innovation opportunities. LPNM chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali highlighted the sector's potential for youth engagement, emphasising the role of technology and fresh perspectives in driving growth. 'Youth involvement can generate lucrative income and introduce modern approaches like IoT and mechanisation,' he said during the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration. The event, themed 'Our Pineapple, Our Pride,' marked its inaugural edition, aligning with World Pineapple Day on June 27. Sheikh Umar noted that the celebration honours pineapple farmers and industry players while commemorating LPNM's legacy since 1957. He also revealed unofficial projections from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), estimating earnings of up to RM8,000 per farmer this year. LPNM aims to raise this to RM10,000 under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu attended the event, reinforcing the government's support for agri-food development. Sheikh Umar stressed that while pineapples are not a staple food, they significantly impact Malaysia's trade balance. The biennial event seeks to invigorate the sector, addressing the current trade deficit in food imports versus exports.
