Youths urged to tap into Malaysia's booming pineapple industry
JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) is encouraging young entrepreneurs to explore the thriving pineapple industry, which promises substantial economic returns and innovation opportunities.
LPNM chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali highlighted the sector's potential for youth engagement, emphasising the role of technology and fresh perspectives in driving growth.
'Youth involvement can generate lucrative income and introduce modern approaches like IoT and mechanisation,' he said during the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day celebration.
The event, themed 'Our Pineapple, Our Pride,' marked its inaugural edition, aligning with World Pineapple Day on June 27.
Sheikh Umar noted that the celebration honours pineapple farmers and industry players while commemorating LPNM's legacy since 1957.
He also revealed unofficial projections from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), estimating earnings of up to RM8,000 per farmer this year.
LPNM aims to raise this to RM10,000 under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu attended the event, reinforcing the government's support for agri-food development.
Sheikh Umar stressed that while pineapples are not a staple food, they significantly impact Malaysia's trade balance.
The biennial event seeks to invigorate the sector, addressing the current trade deficit in food imports versus exports.

GEORGE TOWN, June 28 (Bernama) -- A 62-year-old retired airline programme manager recently lost RM436,000 of her life savings after falling victim to an online investment scam involving fake initial public offering (IPO). Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the woman lodged a report with the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after discovering she had been deceived by a fraudulent scheme. The scam was promoted through a WhatsApp group called 'enspire capital', which promised high-returns through IPO investments. The victim was instructed to download an app named 'freeman plus' as the investment platform. 'Between May 12 and June 2, she made 56 fund transfers to four different company accounts. Despite the promises, she received no returns. Instead, the suspects kept requesting additional payments,' he said in a statement tonight. Investigations found the victim used her personal and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to finance the so-called investments. Mohd Alwi said efforts are ongoing to identify and track down the syndicate responsible. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -- BERNAMA

Decision to review 13MP not made in haste, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister had asked all ministries to study the draft of the 13MP and submit their feedback to the economy ministry. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is not a hasty reaction, but one that has gone through a discussion process over the past two weeks, said communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said the discussions began with a draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. I mentioned (previously) that the prime minister had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general. 'Any policy, programme or decision must first be presented at a Cabinet meeting. So, on Friday last week (June 20), the prime minister requested all ministries to study the draft and submit their feedback to the economy ministry,' the government spokesman said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda programme organised by the community communications department (J-Kom) here today. Following that, he said, a special Cabinet meeting was held last Monday to review the feedback from the ministries. 'During the meeting, it was found that many matters raised by the ministries needed to be considered by the economy ministry in drawing up the 13MP document. 'That was one of the reasons why, at last Wednesday's Cabinet meeting – the latest one – it was decided that finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan would take on the duties and functions of the economy minister,' he said. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli was reported to have questioned the government's move to review the 13MP, calling it a hasty response to social media criticism. This followed chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's announcement yesterday that Amir had been tasked with 'reviewing and revamping' the 13MP, while concurrently performing the duties and functions of the economy minister, effective immediately. The 13MP is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.

70 Winners Take Home Prizes Worth RM300,000 In UDA Lucky Draw
JOHOR BAHRU, June 28 (Bernama) -- UDA Holdings Berhad (UDA) today announced 70 lucky draw winners who walked away with prizes worth a total of RM300,000, held in conjunction with the UDA Real Estate Campaign 2024/2025. UDA president and chief executive officer Johari Shukri Jamil said a total of 268 property buyers participated in the draw, 55 per cent of whom were Bumiputera.
