320 households in Rejang Park receive reimbursement for septic tank self-installation

(From sixth right, back row) Tiang and Ting take a group photo with recipients. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (July 20): A total of RM960,000 was disbursed to 320 households in Rejang Park here, with each receiving RM3,000 as reimbursement for the self-installation of septic tanks. State Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang presented the cheques to the recipients at the Rejang Park commercial centre here yesterday, and he thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the reimbursement. 'This was my proposal, and he approved it. We are really thankful to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,' Tiang told reporters. In recounting the timeline leading up to today's event, the Pelawan assemblyman referred back to 2015 when he was approached by the public regarding the long-standing issues with septic tanks. He recalled that at the time, the residential homes in Rejang Park and the commercial district were linked by an underground central sewage system. He said the centralised system built in the 1970s had somehow begun to fall apart, impacting toilets of the affected house owners and leading to extremely poor hygiene conditions. 'Consequently, they reached out to me to see if I could help. We conducted surveys of houses, gathering data, taking photographs, and even collecting petitions from the residents. This information was then submitted to the then Chief Minister, (the late) Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem). 'In 2018, our Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, visited Sibu for the general election. During his visit, I discussed this project with him, explaining that we needed RM3 million to address 345 houses and 32 commercial lots. He agreed, recognizing the urgency of the situation, and said this was something we had to do immediately,' he said. Tiang said that however, the onset of Covid-19 pandemic affected the progress of the project. He appreciated the efforts of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in assisting with the project. 'We completed the project. But then, still many of the residents came to me and asked for assistance. I said, okay, let me try after I get elected, so that I have more right to ask for this from you. 'In 2021, I achieved that goal and was elected. Since then, I have remained committed to this mission. But it took me three years to find the right way to do this, to find this reimbursement subsidy. 'Last year, I once again reached out to our Premier. Thankfully, our Premier was gracious enough to approve it once more. This allowed me to provide a subsidy of RM3,000 to each (of the 320) household (in Rejang Park). 'This morning, we managed to cover 320 homes. After a decade-long journey, I can say with gratitude that this chapter is now complete. Mission accomplished, and all thanks to our Premier.' Tiang added: 'He (Abang Johari) genuinely cares about the issues people face, even at this level. I'm thrilled about this transformative project that has significantly improved the residents' quality of life here. 'It has established a very clean and supportive commercial setting for all the businesspeople in this area. I'm truly delighted,' he said. Also present was SMC Market and Petty Traders standing committee chairwoman Jenny Ting. lead Michael Tiang reimbursement Rejang Park septic tank

RM1.2 million drug bust in Kota Kinabalu, man arrested

Published on: Saturday, July 12, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Jauteh showing some of the drugs seized. Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old local, believed to be part of a drug syndicate, was arrested following three separate police raids around the city, resulting in the seizure of more than 20kg of various narcotics worth RM960,000. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the operation, conducted by the Kota Kinabalu Narcotics Crime Investigation Division on July 4, began with a raid on a condominium. Officers found 790.56gm of suspected methamphetamine (syabu), along with a money-counting machine, a digital scale and drug packaging tools. The following day, a second raid on another rented condominium uncovered 14.14gm of suspected ketamine. Acting on information from the suspect, police then inspected an abandoned vehicle in a parking lot, which led to the discovery of a suitcase containing 12.7kg of syabu, 6.9kg of ketamine and 25 packets ecstasy juice and 10 ecstasy pills. Jauteh said the drugs were likely intended for both local consumption, especially at entertainment venues, and distribution to neighbouring countries. He added that the suspect is believed to have been actively involved in drug trafficking for the past year. Assets worth RM240,000 suspected to be linked to drug activities were also seized, bringing the total value of the seizures to RM1.2 million. The suspect remains in custody and is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. On the narcotic trafficking trends, Jauteh said drugs are typically smuggled into Sabah via sea cargo for large quantities and air transport for smaller consignments. 'This is based on patterns observed over the past five years,' he said, calling for stronger collaboration between enforcement agencies and the public to curb drug threats, especially those involving cross-border smuggling. 'We need comprehensive cooperation from all stakeholders responsible for the movement of goods in and out of Sabah. 'Once drugs enter Sabah, the police can act, but prevention must start before entry,' he said. Jauteh encouraged community involvement in combating drug abuse, saying residents should report any suspicious activities if they are unable to intervene directly. 'Everyone has a role, whether offering guidance or reporting to the authorities. We need united efforts at the grassroots level,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU (June 11): Police seized nearly RM1 million worth of drugs in a series of raids at two luxury condominiums in the state capital earlier this month. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said a 23-year-old local man was arrested during the 7.45pm raid on July 4. A team from the Narcotic Division of the Kota Kinabalu Police Contingent (IPD-KK) raided the condominium units located at Jalan Haji Saman and in Jesselton. Both units were reportedly used to store syabu, ketamine and ecstasy, believed to be for both local and international distribution. 'In the first raid, police found a plastic bag containing 790.56 grams of syabu. Also seized were a money counting machine, digital scale and drug packaging equipment,' Jauteh said in a statement on Friday. Following the initial operation, police raided a second condominium rented by the suspect, where they found two plastic packets containing 14.14 grams of ketamine. The suspect then led investigators to a vehicle parked near the Sabah Art Gallery Outdoor Artspace. Inside the vehicle, police discovered a luggage bag and a box containing 12.7 kilograms of syabu, 6.9 kilograms of ketamine, 25 packets of ecstasy juice and 10 ecstasy pills. The total estimated value of the drugs seized was RM960,000. Police also confiscated two luxury four-wheel drive vehicles, bringing the total value of the seized drugs and assets to RM1.23 million. Jauteh said preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were smuggled into Sabah via air before being trafficked to neighbouring countries. 'The drugs seized could have supplied up to 100,000 drug addicts,' he said. The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine but has no prior criminal record. He is currently under remand for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Meanwhile, Jauteh revealed that Sabah police have seized RM6.56 million worth of drugs in the first six months of this year, almost doubling the RM2.62 million recorded during the same period in 2024. 'This RM3.94 million increase reflects the success of continuous intelligence and enforcement operations by the police,' he said. In total, Sabah police conducted 8,170 raids and arrested 8,542 drug-related suspects in the first half of 2025.

Cops uncover syndicate using luxury condos as front to store drugs in KK

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun (centre) showing the drugs seized from a 23-year-old man. KOTA KINABALU: A 23-year-old man's elaborate plan to turn two luxury condominiums into secret drug distribution hubs ended when police uncovered his illegal operation. Officers found the high-end units being used to store and distribute various narcotics, including methamphetamine, ketamine, and ecstasy. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the investigation revealed that the suspect had rented two posh condos, one on Jalan Haji Saman and another in Jesselton, using them as covert bases to stash and package drugs destined for both local and international markets. "These upscale premises are believed to be chosen for their exclusivity and low suspicion, and operated as the syndicate's nerve centre for its trafficking activities," he told reporters on Friday (July 11). The secrecy did not last, as acting on intelligence, officers from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Kota Kinabalu District Police raided one of the units on July 4 at 7.45pm. There, they arrested the suspect and found 790.56g of syabu inside a bag, alongside a digital weighing scale, packaging tools, and a money-counting machine, all telltale signs of large-scale drug operations. Jauteh said a second raid at another luxury unit the next day uncovered 14.14g of ketamine. "The investigation then led us to a locked Toyota Yaris, parked near the Sabah Art Gallery Outdoor Artspace, believed to be another stash point. "Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a suitcase and a box containing 12.7kg of syabu, 6.9kg of ketamine, 25 packets of ecstasy juice, and 10 ecstasy pills. In total, the seizure is estimated to be worth RM960,000," he said. In addition, police also confiscated two four-wheel drive vehicles, bringing the total value of the operation's bust to RM1.23mil. "This syndicate had clearly gone to great lengths to disguise its operations using high-end properties as secret bases. These drugs could have fuelled over 100,000 individual doses," he said. He added that the suspect, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, had no previous criminal record. The drugs are believed to have entered Sabah by air and were being prepared for cross-border distribution. The suspect is currently remanded and under investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
