KOTA KINABALU: A local man suspected of being part of a drug trafficking syndicate was arrested following three separate raids in the city centre that led to the seizure of over 20 kilogrammes of various drugs. The operations, conducted by the Kota Kinabalu police narcotics team on July 4, uncovered drugs worth an estimated RM960,000. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the first raid at a condominium led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man and the discovery of nearly 800 grammes of syabu along with money-counting and packing equipment. A second raid early the next morning at another rented condominium found a small quantity of suspected ketamine. Later that day, the suspect led police to a parked vehicle containing a bag with 12.7 kilogrammes of syabu, 6.9 kilogrammes of ketamine, as well as ecstasy pills and packets. Jauteh said some of the drugs, including liquid-based ones, were meant for local use in entertainment venues while the rest were believed to be destined for neighbouring countries. Police also seized assets worth RM240,000 suspected to be linked to drug proceeds, and the suspect remains in custody under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Mara denies involvement in fatal student motorcycle convoy
KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has denied organising the motorcycle convoy that led to a fatal crash along the North-South Expressway involving 16 students from its affiliated institutions. In a statement today, Mara said the ride was not an official event under any of its institutions, but rather a casual initiative planned by the students themselves. "Based on preliminary investigations, the convoy was an informal activity casually organised by the students through discussions in a WhatsApp group, without any official involvement from the institutions or Mara," it said. The crash occurred at about 2.30am at KM262.5 northbound, when the group of motorcyclists was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Senawang. Three students from Kolej Poly-Tech Mara (KPTM) Bangi died in the incident, while nine others sustained injuries and received treatment at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban. Three students escaped unharmed. Mara also confirmed that one student from the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) sustained minor injuries and is currently being treated at the same hospital. The three deceased students were identified as Haris Azib Sulaiman, Afkar Fitri Affendi, and Aliff Syahmi Abdul Hakim. Their remains have been sent to their respective hometowns. Mara said it has channelled RM1,500 in condolence aid to each bereaved family and is processing insurance claims of up to RM38,000 per victim, subject to policy terms. The agency expressed its sorrow over the tragedy and pledged continued support, including emotional and psychosocial assistance for affected families and students. "Mara urges all parties to allow the authorities to carry out a thorough and professional investigation. "At the same time, Mara will continue to work closely with the educational institutions involved and the relevant agencies to ensure that follow-up actions are taken in a responsible, transparent and compassionate manner," it said. Earlier, Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din said early investigations revealed the group had been travelling in the middle and right lanes of the highway when three motorcycles at the front collided. The impact caused the riders to fall onto the road, triggering a domino effect as 12 motorcycles behind crashed into them.

Man jailed five years, wife fined RM18,000 for abusing daughter with durian husk
Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - AI-generated image KUALA LUMPUR: A man was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, while his wife was fined RM18,000 by the Sessions Court here today after both pleaded guilty to abusing their daughter with a durian husk last week. Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh ordered Bunyamin Sukiman, 42, to serve his sentence from the date of arrest on July 18, while his wife, Yorlini Abdullah Umar, 32, will face three months' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. The court also ordered both accused to be placed on a three-year good behaviour bond without surety and to perform 12 months of community service. According to the charge, Yorlini, the biological mother of the victim, and Bunyamin, the child's stepfather, were accused of abusing the girl, aged seven years and 11 months, causing injuries to her body at a residence in Jalan Ampang here around 6 pm on July 16. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the senior assistant for Student Affairs at the victim's school had called her in over an allegation that she had cut another student's headscarf. The girl was found to be innocent, but during the investigation, she disclosed that she had been beaten, had her ear twisted by both her mother and stepfather, and punched by the man. She further revealed that they had placed her hand on the floor and slammed a durian husk on it, causing injury. The wounded hand was then soaked in warm salted water, and tied with adhesive tape and left overnight. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Ravindejit Kaur urged the court to impose a severe sentence, stressing that the victim, a minor, was entitled to protection, not violence. 'The act of pressing a durian husk onto the child's hand and subsequently soaking it in salt water is an act of extreme cruelty. Parents are meant to protect their children, not unleash their anger upon them,' she submitted. In mitigation, the couple's lawyer, Simret Singh, pleaded for a lenient sentence, stating that Yorlini was unemployed and financially dependent on Bunyamin, who works as a vehicle sales advisor and is the family's sole breadwinner. 'The couple has two children, including the victim. They were remanded for seven days and cooperated fully with the authorities. During their detention, both expressed remorse and pledged not to repeat the offence,' said the lawyer. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SEPANG: An enforcement officer was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 here this morning on suspicion of misconduct known as 'Counter Setting', which is a collaboration between immigration officers and syndicates to allow entry for foreigners without valid documents. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement today that the enforcement officer was detained at about 9.20 am today by the AKPS Monitoring and Integrity Unit after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the officer's suspicious behaviour at the entry checkpoint counter. AKPS stated that the officer in question was handed over to the AKPS KLIA Integrity Unit for internal investigation before being handed over to the Selangor branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further action.
