The unique way Dylan Harper can meet high expectations with Spurs
The post The unique way Dylan Harper can meet high expectations with Spurs appeared first on ClutchPoints. As the second overall selection of the NBA Draft, Dylan Harper joins a San Antonio Spurs team that boasts the last two Rookie of the Year winners. Advertisement The pressure is on, yes, it is, but not in the way you might think. For several reasons, the odds are against Harper netting the Spurs another ROY winner. What would determine whether Harper meets high expectations is what the Silver and Black do in his first year. It'll be tough for Dylan Harper to win Rookie of the Year No NBA team has ever featured three consecutive ROY winners. Last season, the Spurs became the third team in league history to draft and keep back-to-back Rookies of the Year when Stephon Castle captured the trophy off the heels of Victor Wembanyama's historic campaign. They matched Minnesota Timberwolves rookies Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns in 2014-2015 and Buffalo Braves teammates Bob McAdoo and Ernie DiGregorio in 1972-73. A Harper Rookie of the Year win would prove unprecedented. Advertisement Regarding the ROY race, though, more important is the presence of Cooper Flagg. If Harper was the second-best prospect in this draft – and he was – then Flagg was the top prospect in the field. He's the odds-on favorite to win the award. Specifically, Flagg will be aided by the reality that he'll have a chance to put up big numbers. Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving will miss much, if not most, of next season, and Anthony Davis is injury-prone, so the former Duke Blue Devil is going to have the ball in his hands plenty. Conversely, Harper joins a team that features veteran ball-handler De'Aaron Fox, a generational superstar in Wembanyama, and the reigning Rookie of the Year in Castle. © Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Dylan Harper's true measure of meeting Spurs expectations Because Harper joins two players who've made All-Star games – Wemanayama this past season, Fox in 2023 – and the most recent ROY, the Spurs fully expect to contend for a postseason spot. They were in contention last year until Wemby went out with an injury. After winning 22 games the season before, San Antonio improved by 12 wins, despite missing not only Wemabanyana since February, but Fox as well for the final month. Advertisement The Spurs spent the weeks prior to the draft somewhat engaged in talks to acquire future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant. Reports indicate the Phoenix Suns wanted either the second overall pick or Castle in a trade for KD. From the start of any negotiations, the Spurs made both off-limits. Stands to reason for Castle because of what he just did in his first taste of the NBA. That Harper was untouchable tells you what GM Brian Wright and company think of the former Rutgers Scarlett Knight. If Harper plays a big role in helping the Spurs improve by another 12 wins or so and into the playoffs, he'd put the franchise ahead of schedule. If Durant was supposed to mean 'win now,' the 19-year-old from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, was supposed to represent the future. If Harper checks both boxes, he would've accomplished far more than any personal hardware. Cooper Flagg's NBA ROY odds slide as bettors hammer in-state rival
The race for NBA Rookie of the Year is officially on. Following the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night, bettors have been making their voices (read: wallets) heard on the ROY market and, perhaps surprisingly, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg has not dominated the action. NBA DRAFT 2025: First-round grades for every pick In fact, his odds have actually dropped from where they originally opened at BetMGM. Here's a look at the Rookie of the Year market on Thursday: BetMGM Line movement (Open to Now): BetMGM Highest Ticket% BetMGM Highest Handle% BetMGM Biggest Liability Dylan Harper (11-1) was selected No. 2 overall by the San Antonio Spurs, though he still has longer odds than Ace Bailey (8-1) and Tre Johnson (7-1). Bettors may be onto something here, though. In the last 10 years, the No. 1 overall pick won Rookie of the Year four times (Karl-Anthony Towns, Ben Simmons, Paolo Banchero, Victor Wembanyama). It's not like being the first pick gives players a distinct advantage in the ROY race. That said, the last No. 2 overall pick to win was Ja Morant in 2019-20. We'll see how these numbers shift before the 2025-26 season begins. Between Summer League, training camp and injuries, there is still a long way to go before we get a clear picture of the race. In the meantime, early bettors are staying away from the favorite.

2025-26 NBA Rookie Of The Year Odds: Cooper Flagg Heavy Favorite
The 2025 NBA Draft is on the horizon. And while we still don't know exactly where each player will land, bettors are already getting in on the Rookie of the Year action for next season. At BetMGM, Cooper Flagg is currently the heavy favorite to win ROY at -400. The 6-foot-9 forward from Duke also has the shortest odds at -10000 to be selected No. 1. Even though the Duke superstar is the odds-on favorite in this spot, you never know what could happen over the course of a season. Stephon Castle won the award most recently after opening third on the board at around +650 behind Alex Sarr, who opened as the favorite. Will Flagg live up to the hype next season? Let's dive into the odds at BetMGM as of June 24. Odds to win NBA Rookie of the Year 2025-26 Cooper Flagg: -400 (bet $10 to win $12.50 total) Ace Bailey: +500 (bet $10 to win $60 total) Tre Johnson: +700 (bet $10 to win $80 total) Dylan Harper: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total) Walter Clayton Jr: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total) V.J. Edgecombe: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) Kon Knueppel: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) All other players +3000 or longer odds Cooper Flagg dazzled as a Blue Devil while at Duke. He averaged 18.9 points, 7.5 boards and 4.1 assists per game. But according to "The Herd" co-host Jason McIntyre, the forward might not even start next season, which could impact his ROY campaign. "My guess is that … Flagg is the team's sixth man next season before being ushered in as a starter in his second year," he wrote. The next player on the board is Rutgers' Ace Bailey at +500. Bailey averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and one steal per game last season. Like Flagg, Bailey might also come off the bench next season — especially if he goes to a team like the 76ers, who already have the likes of Paul George in the rotation. The Scarlet Knight could end up being drafted by the Wizards. In Washington, he has a better chance of stepping in as a starter, which could boost his ROY stock. Rounding out the top three is the Longhorns' Tre Johnson at +700. After shooting a whopping 39.7% from three on 6.8 attempts per contest, McIntyre likes Tre's Rookie of the Year odds — especially if the Wizards draft him. "He is not a bad bet for Rookie of the Year because he's going to probably average 18 a game on this bad team." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Candace Parker Dismisses Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Rivalry: "It's Like Comparing Apples And Oranges"
Candace Parker Dismisses Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese Rivalry: "It's Like Comparing Apples And Oranges" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. WNBA icon Candace Parker appeared on the latest episode of the Spolitics podcast, where she shared her thoughts about the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry. Parker made it clear she isn't a fan of Clark and Reese being compared to each other. Advertisement "I just think that it's like comparing apples and oranges," Parker said. "Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, it's like, what are we doing? They like doing the Magic [Johnson] and [Larry] Bird comparison. Well, they played similar positions. Bird wasn't a point guard, but he played the guard position. They at least kind of matched up. This? What are we doing? I'm not falling into that. I'm not into the comparison. "I think there are a number of things that Angel can improve on, will improve on in the situation she's in," Parker continued. "And I think Caitlin Clark has done that, even in her first year, in terms of being able to be that floor general... I think the thing about Caitlin, yes, she can shoot from the logo, but she makes her team better." Parker makes some good points here. A guard like Clark and a forward like Reese aren't really matching up against each other, but the main focus from the outside when it came to this rivalry wasn't about the play on the court. Race was a big part of it, and things kicked off towards the end of the 2023 national title game, when Reese taunted Clark as LSU beat Iowa. The teams would meet again in the Elite Eight the following year, but the tables had turned by then. Clark and Iowa beat LSU, only to lose in the national title game again, this time to South Carolina. Advertisement Failing to win the national title certainly didn't lead to Clark's stock falling. The Indiana Fever would select her with the first pick of the 2024 WNBA, while Reese went seventh to the Chicago Sky. The rivalry would be a big talking point throughout their rookie season. In their first-ever meeting in the WNBA, Reese came under fire for clapping after her teammate cheap-shotted Clark. That ensured that the media and fans would keep talking about these two. They were the leading candidates for the Rookie of the Year award as well, which only brought more attention to the rivalry. Clark would end up winning ROY, and she has had a much better sophomore season than Reese, too. Clark averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 9.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game for the Fever before going down with a quad strain. Reese, meanwhile, has put up 9.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game for the Sky. Candace Parker On Caitlin Clark Being "Targeted" During Her Rookie Season Clark being targeted by her opponents was another big storyline during her rookie season. The notion was that they were jealous of her, but Parker stated that's always been the case in the WNBA when the next big thing comes in. Advertisement 'When you are a generational talent, and I say that in Diana [Taurasi], Maya [Moore], myself, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark, A'ja Wilson, you're gonna experience the physicality," Parker stated. "The scouting report is to stop you, and a lot of it is to be physical. Do you take a couple extra licks from people? Yeah. Was I the rookie coming in and got different shots taken at me or hard fouls? Oh yeah.' To Clark's credit, she never made a big deal of the increased physicality. She played it down every single time it was brought up, and you really admire how this 23-year-old has carried herself during her time in the WNBA. GSFL 2025: Perfect 10 coaches votes for Michael McGlade in Royals narrow win, Darcy Wallinger leads overall
Royals midfielder Michael McGlade picked up a perfect 10 in his first polling of the season in the Great Southern Football League coaches votes on Saturday. McGlade was a unanimous choice as best-on-ground by the two coaches, in the Lions tense four-point win over Denmark-Walpole at McLean Park . The Lions, who have won two games in a row, picked up most of the votes from the game with Declan McNamara and Seb Stanton also polling well. It was the first votes for McGlade in the 2025 GSFL Coaches Player of the Year Award. McNamara continued his strong season with seven votes and Stanton received four while Nelson Tulip and Ryan Hick from the Magpies got three each. Mt Barker gun Darcy Wallinger remains in the outright leader of the award, having picked up more votes in round five of the season. Wallinger (26 votes) holds a three-vote advantage over his teammate Daniel Patching, while Railways' Ryley Valli and Bulls' Darcy Clarke are just one vote further back. Patching and Clarke were highly influential in the Bulls' 38-point win over North Albany at Collingwood Park . The pair picked up nine votes each while Kangas midfielder Matt Orzel added five votes to his tally. Wallinger and Bulls forward Brandon Ugle collected three votes. Opinions were split in the top-of-the-table clash as the Tigers won by 60 points over Albany at Retravision Stadium . Eight players received votes from the coaches with only Lachie Cale and Logan Stubber featuring for both coaches. Young Tiger Cale picked up seven votes while Sharks' Bailey Taylor, Stubber and Tigers ruck Shane Braimbridge all got five. Just six votes separate the top six players on the leaderboard with McNamara (21) and Sharks' Bryce Blaszkow (20) well within striking distance. Cale joins teammate Jayden Scott on 19 and closely followed by Isaac Baum (18) and Orzel (17). Each league coach votes 5-4-3-2-1 for players on both sides at the end of every game. 2025 Coaches' Player of the Year Award Voting Round 5 Albany v Railways 7 Lachie Cale (RAIL) 5 Bailey Taylor (ALB) 5 Logan Stubber (RAIL) 5 Shane Braimbridge (RAIL) 3 Declan Willey (RAIL) 2 Bryce Blaszkow (ALB) 2 Ryley Valli (RAIL) 1 Bodhi Stubber (RAIL) Denmark-Walpole v Royals 10 Michael McGlade (ROY) 7 Declan McNamara (ROY) 4 Seb Stanton (ROY) 3 Nelson Tulip (DW) 3 Ryan Hick (DW) 2 Joel Flick (ROY) 1 James Charlesworth (DW) North Albany v Mt Barker 9 Daniel Patching (MB) 9 Darcy Clarke (MB) 5 Matt Orzel (NA) 3 Brandon Ugle (MB) 3 Darcy Wallinger (MB) 1 Regan Christensen (NA) Leaderboard 26: Darcy Wallinger (MB) 23: Daniel Patching (MB) 22: Ryley Valli (RAIL) Darcy Clarke (MB) 21: Declan McNamara (ROY) 20: Bryce Blaszkow (ALB) 19: Jayden Scott (RAIL) Lachie Cale (RAIL) 18: Isaac Baum (ALB) 17: Matt Orzel (NA) 15: Taj Williams (ALB) 13: Seb Ballard (MB) Hayden Parker (RAIL) 12: Tyler Stone (DW) Kobi Keen (NA) 11: Kane Pinney (ALB) 10: Sam Holmes (ALB) Michael McGlade (ROY)
