GSFL 2025: Perfect 10 coaches votes for Michael McGlade in Royals narrow win, Darcy Wallinger leads overall
Royals midfielder Michael McGlade picked up a perfect 10 in his first polling of the season in the Great Southern Football League coaches votes on Saturday.
McGlade was a unanimous choice as best-on-ground by the two coaches, in the
Lions tense four-point win over Denmark-Walpole at McLean Park
.
The Lions, who have won two games in a row, picked up most of the votes from the game with Declan McNamara and Seb Stanton also polling well.
It was the first votes for McGlade in the 2025 GSFL Coaches Player of the Year Award.
McNamara continued his strong season with seven votes and Stanton received four while Nelson Tulip and Ryan Hick from the Magpies got three each.
Mt Barker gun Darcy Wallinger remains in the outright leader of the award, having picked up more votes in round five of the season.
Wallinger (26 votes) holds a three-vote advantage over his teammate Daniel Patching, while Railways' Ryley Valli and Bulls' Darcy Clarke are just one vote further back.
Patching and Clarke were highly influential
in the Bulls' 38-point win over North Albany at Collingwood Park
.
The pair picked up nine votes each while Kangas midfielder Matt Orzel added five votes to his tally.
Wallinger and Bulls forward Brandon Ugle collected three votes.
Opinions were split in the top-of-the-table clash
as the Tigers won by 60 points over Albany at Retravision Stadium
.
Eight players received votes from the coaches with only Lachie Cale and Logan Stubber featuring for both coaches.
Young Tiger Cale picked up seven votes while Sharks' Bailey Taylor, Stubber and Tigers ruck Shane Braimbridge all got five.
Just six votes separate the top six players on the leaderboard with McNamara (21) and Sharks' Bryce Blaszkow (20) well within striking distance.
Cale joins teammate Jayden Scott on 19 and closely followed by Isaac Baum (18) and Orzel (17).
Each league coach votes 5-4-3-2-1 for players on both sides at the end of every game.

Knapp breaks record, Aussie Endycott in the PGA mix
Jake Knapp has pulled off a feat no one else has in PGA Tour history. Knapp shot an 11-under 61 on Friday to break a Rocket Classic record that stood for less than a day and became the first on the tour to break 60 and shoot a 61 or lower in the same season. But that still wasn't enough to put him in the top six, entering the weekend at Detroit Golf Club. Chris Kirk (65), Philip Knowles (64) and Andrew Putnam (66) share the second-round lead at 14 under. Jackson Suber (65) was another shot back. Aldrich Potgieter, who had a 70 after sharing the 18-hole lead with Kevin Roy after a record-setting 62, was two strokes back with Michael Thorbjornsen (67) and Mark Hubbard (69). Knapp was in a large pack of players, including Australian Harrison Endycott (66), Collin Morikawa (64), Hideki Matsuyama (66) and Roy (71), three shots off the lead going into the third round. Endycott followed his opening 67 with a bogey-free six-under 66. The 29-year-old Sydneysider made three birdies on each nine, including going back-to-back on 13 and 14. The 31-year-old Knapp, who won the Mexico Open last year as a rookie, started the second round 130th in the 156-player field after opening with a 72. He surged into contention with nine birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free round. "I was just probably upset all night and this morning, so I think that maybe helped a little bit," he said. Knapp, ranked No.99 in the world, is the only player on the tour to shoot 61 or better in two rounds this season. He shot a 59 - one off the tour scoring record of 58 set by Jim Furyk in 2016 - at the Cognizant Classic four months ago, when he broke the tournament scoring record before cooling off and tying for sixth. Knapp broke the 18-hole record at Detroit Golf Club that was set Thursday in the first round when Potgieter and Roy both shot a 62. "I feel like when I start making birdies, I want to make more," Knapp said. "I was even kind of thinking about 59 when I stuck it close on my third to last hole." The 28-year-old Knowles, shooting for his first PGA Tour win, made the cut for just the third time in 11 events after failing to make it to the weekend at five straight tournaments. "It's not been my best year thus far by any stretch of the imagination, but golf is funny," he said. "When you're playing bad, you never feel like you're going to play good again. And when you have days like today, you just don't understand how you could ever shoot a bad round of golf." Min Woo Lee, the first to break the course record with a 63 on Thursday, made 73 on Friday to tumble down the field to tied 36th. He made the six-under cut by two, but Aaron Baddeley (71,73), Cam Davis (74, 70) and Karl Vilips (71,74) will all miss the weekend action.

GWS recovered from a poor first quarter to claim a thrilling comeback win over the Suns to consolidate their position in the top eight. Gold Coast kicked four goals in the first four minutes of the game to take a big early lead, posting seven goals to four in a dominant opening quarter. He has not played a game since 2024. Ugle-Hagan has now shared details of how he has taken steps towards playing in the AFL again after hitting 'rock bottom'. In an emotional interview with Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson on the Rip Through it podcast published on Saturday, Ugle-Hagan said he at one point had suicidal thoughts frequently. In a tell-all interview, Ugle-Hagan made several eye-catching comments, including: — His desire to play for the Bulldogs before the end of the 2025 season. — His commitment to see out his contract with the Bulldogs through to the end of the 2026 season. — One of his coping mechanisms was to 'get on the p*** with mates'. — He at times did not want to leave his house; AND — He was privately rocked by the public racist abuse he received during the 2023 season. The star forward was racially abused by a spectator in a game between the Dogs and St Kilda in 2023 and he responded the next week booting five goals. He famously pointed to his skin in a brave public stance against racism after kicking one of those goals. While publicly, that appeared to be the end of it, Ugle-Hagan has revealed the incident privately rocked him. 'I was angry (about the abuse), sad, and behind doors I was bawling my eyes out. It affected me heaps,' he said. 'Then I was even embarrassed. I said nothing and did nothing. I just didn't want to go out in public. 'I was going to point to my mouth guard because it is indigenous colours, but I pointed at my skin and pulled up my jumper and it was the best feeling ever. 'The boys and the team f*** they made me feel good.' He said he has been battling many issues with his mental health. 'All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,' Ugle-Hagan said. 'It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn't drive, I just didn't trust myself driving. There were times when I would think about – to be honest with you – just not even worth even living. 'I went through a struggle where I didn't want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement. 'Definitely (there were suicidal thoughts). Suicidal thoughts would come pretty frequently. 'Especially when I felt like I was on my own the whole time. The way I was isolated and put out in public.' He said he at times was not interested in football and at times could not see a way for him to return to playing the game at an elite level. 'When you are down you want to keep finding an upper. My upper was probably staying and hanging out with my mates and getting on the p*** and training with them as well,' he said. 'But it just had no end goal, I didn't have a game. I didn't have anything. 'My mental health wasn't in the right space so I was struggling, and I found it really tough to even enjoy football. I lost the fun in it. I didn't want to play, it wasn't even a priority because all I wanted to do was find something. 'But I didn't know what that was until I have had this break.' He said the stay at the retreat had helped change his life. It was reported earlier this month Ugle-Hagan has ambitions to play for the Swans next year, but he said on the podcast he has not thought about a trade. He had trained sparingly with AFL — and at times VFL — teammates before his official leave of absence began in late April.
