5 government jobs in India students can apply for after Class 12
For many students, completing Class 12 marks the beginning of critical career choices. While some opt for higher education, others look toward early employment for stability and a head start in professional life. Government jobs remain a preferred option for thousands of young aspirants each year, offering structure, security and long-term growth. In 2025, several central and state government departments continue to recruit candidates directly after Class 12. These roles are competitive and require preparation, but they offer a clear path to public sector employment at an early stage. Here are five such opportunities worth knowing about. SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination) Conducted by: Staff Selection Commission (SSC) SSC CHSL remains one of the most sought-after government exams after Class 12. It recruits for positions such as Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, and Data Entry Operator in various central government departments. The exam is conducted in two tiers, with questions based on general intelligence, quantitative aptitude, English, and general awareness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play 2025's Best Games for Less! What makes SSC CHSL attractive is the variety of postings and opportunities for internal promotion over time. It serves as an entry point for long-term government careers, especially for those looking to grow within administrative roles. Indian Railways Recruitment ( RRB NTPC – Non-Technical Popular Categories) Conducted by: Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) The Indian Railways continues to be one of the largest public sector employers. Through the RRB NTPC exam, candidates who have passed Class 12 can apply for roles like Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk. The selection process includes a computer-based test followed by a skill test (typing) and document verification. These posts are in high demand because they offer job stability and a defined work structure in one of the most expansive departments of the Government of India. Students interested in public-facing roles or clerical positions in operational offices may find this path particularly well-suited. Indian Defence Services (Army, Navy, Air Force – Agniveer Entry ) Conducted by: Respective Defence Recruitment Boards under Agnipath Scheme With the introduction of the Agnipath scheme, students after Class 12 can now join the armed forces under the Agniveer category. Opportunities exist in all three wings – Army, Navy, and Air Force. These positions offer rigorous training, short-term engagement, and the possibility of long-term service for selected candidates. The selection process includes physical tests, written exams, and medical evaluations. Beyond the pride of uniform, defence service offers leadership development, structured discipline, and valuable life skills that benefit candidates well beyond their years of service. State Police Constable Recruitment Conducted by: State Police Recruitment Boards Many state governments conduct police constable recruitment drives for Class 12 pass candidates. These exams typically include a written test, physical efficiency test, and medical assessment. Posts in the state police forces offer an opportunity to serve in uniform while working at the grassroots level of law enforcement. For students inclined toward physically active roles and public service, this path provides both respect and responsibility. Recruitment timelines and eligibility criteria vary by state, so aspirants must stay updated with their respective state's police board announcements. Department of Post – GDS ( Gramin Dak Sevak ) Conducted by: India Post The Gramin Dak Sevak recruitment is another opportunity open to candidates who have completed Class 12. This role involves responsibilities such as delivering posts, handling branch post office work, and providing basic banking services under India Post Payments Bank. Unlike most competitive exams, GDS selection is based on Class 10 or 12 merit, without a written test. This makes it accessible to students who may not be in a position to invest time in coaching or competitive preparation. The role is particularly suited for those living in rural or semi-urban areas, as local candidates are often given preference during posting. In 2025, Class 12 graduates have a wide array of government career opportunities available to them, ranging from administrative services to defence and public communication roles. While the competition is stiff, each of these pathways offers structure, growth, and a chance to serve in impactful ways. For students considering these options, early awareness and preparation can make a significant difference. Staying informed about recruitment calendars, eligibility norms, and exam patterns is key. Most importantly, students should choose based on interest, aptitude, and long-term alignment with their goals. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Ready to navigate global policies?
