The city was also recognised as the 'Promising Swachh Shehar of the state'. A few months ago, the GHMC applied for the 7-star garbage-free city certification and water plus recertification as part of its push to boost rankings in this year's Swachh Survekshan. Speaking at the award ceremony on Thursday, where Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar presented the recognition, GHMC commissioner RV Karnan said, 'In the coming days, we will focus on strengthening door-to-door collection. This achievement is the result of consistent efforts by citizens and staff. We have progressed from last year's 5-star rating and 9th rank to 7-star and 6th place — a sign of improvement.' SCB recognised cleanest among 58 cantonments The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has been recognised as the cleanest among 58 cantonments in the country for its efforts in solid waste management and the implementation of innovative best practices under Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. Under solid waste management, SCB initiated doorto-door garbage collection in all wards with 95 GPS-enabled garbage collection vehicles for daily monitoring and tracking of waste collection. As part of Swachh Survekshan, the board revived Ramannakunta Lake through desilting, garbage removal, and inlet purification and planted over 15,000 saplings in the past two years across public spaces, parks, lake fronts, and school campuses. Officials said the award highlights dedication to building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for its residents and sanitation workforce alike.

Hyderabad's Green Leap: Mayor calls for city-wide tree plantation drive

Hyderabad: In a significant push for a healthier and greener urban environment, GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, along with GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, officially launched a massive tree plantation drive as part of the VanaMahotsavam initiative. The drive commenced with the planting of saplings at Shirdi Hills Colony in the Kukatpally Zone, marking the start of an ambitious project to plant 25 lakh (2.5 million) saplings across Greater Hyderabad. Inspired by the 'Green Legacy' concept, the Mayor has urged all citizens to actively participate in transforming the city. 'We have set a target of planting 25 lakh saplings this year with public participation, as per government directives,' stated Mayor Vijayalakshmi. She further emphasised that saplings would be distributed to every household in the city, encouraging residents to take an active role in the initiative throughout the planting season. A heartwarming aspect of the campaign is the slogan 'Ek ped, Maa ke naam' (One tree in the name of mother), encouraging individuals to plant a tree in honour of their mothers. The Mayor underscored the crucial importance of not just planting trees but also ensuring their proper care, highlighting that these efforts would cultivate a healthier environment for future generations. Commissioner Karnan reiterated the programme's objective to make Hyderabad green, stressing that the government's goals would be achieved by setting specific VanaMahotsavam targets within each ward. He also laid emphasis on nurturing the planted saplings, stating that 'greater emphasis will be placed on nurturing the plants rather than merely planting them.' The launch event saw enthusiastic participation from students, who chanted 'Go Green' slogans alongside the Mayor and Commissioner, underscoring community involvement in this vital environmental endeavour. Also present were Kukatpally Zonal Commissioner Apurva Chauhan, UBD Additional Commissioner Subhadra Devi, and Corporator RavulaSeshagiri Rao.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner CV Anand participated in the Lal Darwaza Bonalu festival, including the Shikara Puja and Dwajarohanam (flag hoisting) ceremonies. The Commissioner stated that it is customary for the temple committee to invite the Hyderabad City Kotwal for these annual events. CV Anand noted that the Bonalu festivities have been observed here for approximately 120 years, continuing the same tradition. Across Telangana, people celebrate the Bonalu festival with great devotion for a month. CV Anand was accompanied by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, K Apoorva Rao (DCP Special Branch), Sneha Mehra (DCP South Zone), and R Venkateswarlu (DCP Traffic), along with other officials, Temple Committee Chairman B Maruthi Yadav, and committee members. The Commissioner recalled that the Lal Darwaza Simhavahini Sri Mahankali Temple is a historically significant temple. In 1908, severe floods caused by heavy rains and a widespread plague epidemic in the areas surrounding this temple led to the deaths of approximately 50,000 people. At that time, Hyderabad's population stood at 4 lakh. Upon the advice of Prime Minister Kishen Pershad, the then Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, arranged special prayers for the Goddess. 'Following these prayers, the Musi River floods subsided, and the epidemic receded. Since then, it has been a tradition to celebrate Bonalu during the Ashadha month,' stated CV Anand. On this occasion, the Commissioner stated that the Police Department has made all necessary security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents. He recalled that the Golconda Bonalu and Balkampet Bonalu were conducted peacefully.

GHMC, Hyderabad cops partner to free public spaces from pestering beggars

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in coordination with Hyderabad City Police, has launched a special drive to remove beggars from busy traffic junctions and public spaces. The initiative aims to relocate them to shelter homes or reunite them with their families. The GHMC's Urban Community Development (UCD) wing has so far identified 221 individuals — 173 men, 37 women, and 11 children. Of these, 19 have been shifted to GHMC-run shelters, while others were counselled and sent back to their families. As per GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan's instructions, the drive covers key locations such as Basheerbagh, Secretariat, Nampally and Begum Bazar. Special UCD teams are working across all GHMC circles. Officials are conducting medical checks before relocating people to shelters. The initiative not only clears public spaces but also offers care, rehabilitation, and a path toward reintegration for the marginalised, they said.
