"If it's warm and sunny he will lie up near the wall next to the ATM sunbathing. "He actually makes you smile. Bumping into the Mayor AKA RA he lifts what could have been a bad day and makes you smile. "Everybody stops to talk to him, and the kids love to see him about. Health workers in Cambodia on standby to support military, citizens on Thai border
Cambodian Health Minister Chheang Ra (centre) inspects medical facilities in Preah Vihear province on the Cambodia-Thailand border. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN PHNOM PENH (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Cambodian Ministry of Health has deployed additional staff and stockpiled medical supplies to strengthen more than 120 health centres along the border. The beefed up clinics and centres aim to assist local citizens — as well as military personnel — along the Cambodia–Thailand border, following the recent resumption of border clashes. During an inspection tour of the border area of Preah Vihear province on June 28 and 29, Minister of Health Chheang Ra stated that after the incident on May 28, which involved an exchange of fire between Cambodian and Thai troops, medical teams were immediately deployed to the border areas, particularly the Techo Bos Sbov area. The teams also began inspecting health centres and community health bases along the border, from Preah Vihear province to Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pailin, Pursat and Koh Kong. 'The health ministry stands with our people and the troops defending our nation's territory. All local-level institutions are working together in solidarity,' the minister stated. He explained that the ministry has launched a special campaign, conducting regular inspections of health centres, but noted that due to the current border dispute, they are also delivering additional medicines and supplies to health centres, while assessing the wellbeing of local people. 'The local health centres and posts along the Cambodia–Thailand border are not isolated. Medical teams across the country are mobilising to stand with our people. We are preparing teams to be ready for any situation. We've come to assess the situation so we can be even better prepared,' he said. The minister added that the ministry has reinforced over 120 health centres along the border, in addition to seven provincial referral hospitals and a facility in Siem Reap province. 'We have seen that our people are well-prepared, with sufficient medicines and equipment. Our staff are ready to mobilise, performing their daily duties and able to respond immediately when needed. This shows that our people are warm-hearted and well-prepared, and we hope citizens will continue to receive even better services,' he said. During the two-day inspection trip, the minister also met with and provided donations to internally displaced people temporarily staying at Wat Po 5000 — over 5,000 individuals from 2,264 families. The ministry stated that Ra advised the leadership of medical agencies at all levels to collaborate in providing both technical and treatment assistance, while further clarifying and deepening their understanding of the situation. In addition, they must evaluate the outcomes of expanded hospital capacity — particularly focusing on emergency response services, treatment beds, and effective referral systems. He explained that responsible leaders must accelerate the strengthening of district hospital capacity in border areas for emergency services, and they must closely monitor the progress of this work to ensure full readiness for delivering emergency and trauma care in critical situations. - Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network

Anselm Kiefer Solo Exhibition Held in Kyoto's Nijo Castle; Post-WWII German Master Presents ‘Solaris'
Why has humanity continuously repeated tragedies? This question came to mind while viewing a solo exhibition of artworks by German artist Anselm Kiefer at Nijo Castle in Kyoto. The exhibition, which ended Sunday at the World Heritage site, featured selected works of the 80-year-old master, who represents a post-World War II artists' circle in the country. Kiefer is known for massive works that touch on themes related to mythology, religion and science. The artist, born in 1945, overlayed Japanese and Western histories and senses of beauty, and posed this deep question in a world where war has continued unabated. This was Kiefer's first large-scale exhibition in Japan in about 30 years. The items on display comprised 33 artworks, mainly newer ones, including paintings and first work that greeted visitors was an about 9-meter-tall lead sculpture titled 'Ra,' which was placed outdoors. As if resisting the unescapable force of gravity, a pallet with wings extending widely demonstrates the power of imagination, making visitors wonder if the work may be able to take flight. Most of the artworks were displayed inside dimly lit buildings and illuminated only by natural light. The castle is famous for its kinpeki-shohekiga — screen or wall paintings mainly using gold and blue colors — which was invented by the Kano school of artists. The traditional space suited Kiefer's works painted using gold colors, fascinating visitors. Entering the spacious Daidokoro area of the castle's Ninomaru-goten Palace, visitors saw a painting symbolizing the exhibition. The work is about 4 meters high and about 10 meters wide and titled 'For Octavio Paz.' The large-scale painting harshly depicts scorched earth immediately after an atomic bombing. Soft light depicted in the work accentuates the fury of a person at the center of the scene. In contrast, works in the Okiyodokoro area showed a marvelous expanding scene that looks like a golden wheat field. The installation was titled 'Morgenthau Plan.' The installation related to a plan that the United States devised during World War II to make Germany a country without advanced industries after the war. The work overlayed images of rich natural environments, loss in the war and the postwar occupation. The overlaid images depicted Germany's complicated postwar history. Kiefer was born in a German city that had been devastated and has led a modern art movement with his harsh painting style. His techniques include using sand, lead and straw in layers on a canvas and even burning them. What has always stuck with Kiefer is his willingness to face up to the dark history of his country and confront the hardships of mankind. The subhead of the exhibition was 'Solaris,' which means 'related to the sun.' The works looked at the world 80 years after the war and radiated the strength to illuminate the next generation.
