Sunday Brunch turns awkward as host admits 'no wonder we've never won a Bafta'
Sunday Brunch host Simon Rimmer was forced to address the fact the Channel 4 show has never won a Bafta during the latest episode as fans were left fuming over the lineup
Sunday Brunch took an awkward twist in the latest instalment, leaving host Simon Rimmer to point out their lack of Bafta recognition.
On the show, which aired Sunday (July 13), Simon was joined by his regular sidekick Tim Lovejoy, The Spanish Chef aka Omar Allibhoy, and a slew of starry guests including Conan Gray (singer), Sam Palladio (actor), Adam Kay (British TV writer), Laura Checkley (comedian), Aggy K Adams (actress) and Amy Macdonald (singer).
The atmosphere turned a little cringeworthy when Omar had to switch on the deafening blender to whip up a watermelon gazpacho soup, meant to be paired with his tuna carpaccio dish for the hosts and celeb guests on set.
Omar issued a pre-emptive apology before triggering the noisy contraption, prompting bewildered expressions all round as it roared on, uninterrupted, live on air.
Once the noise ceased, Simon returned to the spotlight, a touch sheepishly, acknowledging: "It's no wonder we've never won a Bafta," to the amusement of everyone present, reports the Express.
Despite the blender blunder passing relatively unnoticed by viewers, they didn't miss the chance to share their verdict on the episode as it broadcast live on Sunday, July 13.
A deluge of complaints hit X - the platform formerly known as Twitter - as viewers blasted Channel 4's cooking show, branding it "way past its sell by date" and some even speculated that the series might get axed within months.
One disgruntled viewer wrote: "There is a downside to being a to promote your book/show on this boring #sundaybrunch."
Another exasperated tweet stated: "Sorry... How the f*** is #SundayBrunch still going. It feels unprofessional and is totally boring. They're currently asking how many teeth a Racoon has to a panel of people who, no doubt, want to sell us some s*** books. The show is tired. Next."
Echoing these sentiments, a third critic remarked: "I give it 6/12 months show has long past its sell by date #SundayBrunch."
The programme also faced criticism for its lacklustre content and unfamiliar celebrity guests, with many viewers expressing their disconnect on social media.
One person tweeted: "Legitimately all the guests are strangers to me. They could be standing at a bus stop. Does anyone watching know them? #sundaybrunch.
"Another panel of nobody's on #SundayBrunch...," a second user complained, while another added: "Nope. Not a clue as to who any of these Zlebz are.... #sundaybrunch."
Despite the barrage of negative feedback, there were those who enjoyed the latest instalment, with one fan praising the episode on Sunday Brunch's official Instagram account: "Brilliant show."
