Ganga water quality remained within safe limits after Maha Kumbh 2025: Centre

The water quality of the Ganga river remained within the permissible limits for primary bathing standards both during and after the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, the Jal Shakti ministry said on Thursday. An aerial view of devotees taking a holy dip at Sangam during the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh.(File) The monitoring conducted at eight key locations by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), including Shringverpur Ghat, Sangam, and Deeha Ghat, showed that parameters like pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Faecal Coliform (FC) were well within the acceptable limits throughout religious festivities, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The data was collected between January 12 and February 20, 2025, covering the Amrit Snan days and adjoining periods. The CPCB increased its monitoring from five to eight locations midway through the period to ensure broader coverage. According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the positive results reflect the effectiveness of the sanitation and wastewater management systems implemented during the Mela. The sanitation plan developed by the Prayagraj Mela Authority included temporary drainage systems spanning 250 km, the use of bioremediation ponds, and the installation of temporary sewage and faecal sludge treatment plants. After the event, these systems were dismantled and stored for future use, while disinfection measures ensured hygienic site closure, Choudhary said. The ministry also stated that under the Namami Gange Programme, 502 projects have been sanctioned with 323 completed, 150 under implementation, and 29 in the tendering stage. The Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), which conducted a third-party appraisal, found that the programme has made substantial progress in reducing pollution, improving river flow, and engaging local communities, the MoS said.

Building consensus among states biggest hurdle in river-linking projects: Centre

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The Jal Shakti ministry has acknowledged that building consensus among participating states on the interlinking of rivers (ILR) programme remains the most challenging aspect due to apprehensions over water-sharing. In a written response in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary underlined that the success of ILR projects hinges on inter-state agreement. 'The consensus building amongst states is the most challenging task due to apprehensions of states related to water sharing," Choudhary said. Out of the 30 link projects identified under the National Perspective Plan, five have been prioritised for implementation. This includes the Ken-Betwa Link Project (KBLP), which is currently under execution. With an estimated cost of Rs 44,605 crore, the KBLP aims to provide irrigation to over 10.6 lakh hectares across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and supply drinking water to around 62 lakh people. It will also generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar energy, with completion targeted for March 2030. The modified Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal (PKC) link project, jointly taken up by Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, is expected to provide irrigation to six lakh hectares, drinking water to 21 districts in Rajasthan and 15 in Madhya Pradesh, and industrial water to regions including the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. Another major initiative under consideration is the Godavari-Cauvery link, which would divert unutilised waters from the Indravati sub-basin in Chhattisgarh and provide annual irrigation to 6.78 lakh hectares, along with drinking and industrial water to a population of over 21 million people. The draft Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has already been circulated among the participating states. In Bihar, the Kosi-Mechi intra-state link scheme is expected to divert surplus monsoon water to irrigate over 2.1 lakh hectares and reduce flood impact downstream of the Kosi river. Priyank Kharge's call for ban on RSS gets 'dreams' riposte from BJP

New Delhi: Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge's call to ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on coming to power at the Centre raised the hackles in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ranks as it responded with 'haseen sapne' (happy dreams) jibe. From central ministers to senior BJP leaders, all took strong offence to Congress leader's objectionable labelling of the party's ideological mentor, with some even daring him to ban the right-wing organisation in Congress-ruled states. Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, said that Congress has a history of silencing nationalist voices while staying silent on extremist elements as well as forces with an anti-national mindset. 'This is the reason why they have been relegated to the sidelines. It must stop day-dreaming, it is not going to come to power,' he said. BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar replied with a taunt, "They have been in power for long, also banned the RSS twice. What was the result? He should change his name to 'Mungerilal ke haseen sapne'.' He also dared the Karnataka minister to first blacklist and debar the organisation in his own state, before dreaming about a national ban. 'If you have the courage, you have governments in Karnataka, Himachal, and Telangana. Why can't you do it there? Because the Supreme Court has clearly stated that you cannot ban any cultural organisation like this," he said. Bihar minister Mangal Pandey, speaking to IANS, said that the Congress party has a penchant for opposing and abhorring those outfits which have a deep bond with the motherland. 'RSS is an organisation that abides by nationalistic values and strives to take them forward. Such outfits will never fit in the likes of the Congress party,' said the former Bihar BJP president. Another Bihar minister, Santosh Kumar Singh, said that those who speak about banning RSS have no respect and love for the nation's cultural legacy. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) also objected to Kharge's call and said that this was not the first time that the Congress leader had made such a controversial statement. 'He has previously made several absurd remarks against Sanatan Dharma; he must refrain from such habits,' added Vinod Bansal, National Spokesperson of VHP.
