Search continues for Gresham mountain biker missing near Trillium Lake
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The search continues in the Trillium Lake area for a Gresham man who was reported missing late Friday after not returning from a mountain biking trip. According to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Ralph Sawyer, 52, was expected back at his home around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Sawyer, who is familiar with the terrain, went mountain biking near Mount Hood. His cell phone was also inside the car. A more extensive search with ATVs, K9s, ground searchers and drones was also launched, with an additional search plane from the Hood River County Sheriff's Office. As of Sunday morning, officials say around 70 searchers are looking for Sawyer, including teams from Clackamas County Search and Rescue, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Portland Mountain Rescue, Mountain Wave Emergency Communications, as well as the Hood River Crag Rats. Highland Fire evacuations in place in Crook County 'It's pretty wooded, there's a lot of rivers and streams, and it can be dangerous territory depending on where you go,' said Brian McCall with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. 'If you go off the trails, this is a mountainous region, it's wilderness. So you never know what you're going to find in the wilderness. ' The search is centered along East Still Creek Road to Veda Lake and Kinzel Lake, along with US Forest Service roads around Trillium Lake, authorities say. Sawyer is described as 6-feet-1 with brown hair and was last seen wearing an orange bike helmet, blue shirt and black biking shorts. On Monday, the parajumper unit with the Air Force Reserve joined the search. Shortly after midnight on Saturday, a search group found Sawyer's blue Kia Soul with his cell phone inside the car. The sheriff's office told KOIN 6 News that Sawyer is familiar with the area, adding that he was an experienced biker on a bike meant for this area. 'He did have good equipment and good gear to get around on those kinds of roads,' Brian McCall with CCSO said. 'But still, these roads are rocky, the terrain is steep, and the vegetation is very thick.' Several teams are involved in the search, including Clackamas County Search and Rescue, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Portland Mountain Rescue, Mountain Wave Emergency Communications, and the Hood River Crag Rats. Week-long search for missing mountain biker ends after he drove back home in his own car

(KOIN) – The man whose disappearance caused a multi-day search in the Mount Hood National Forest has returned from a mountain biking trip that ended up lasting a week, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Ralph Sawyer, 52, was reported missing Friday, July 11, after his family said he had . Six days later, deputies were notified that he had returned to his car and driven home. 'Gresham Police confirmed it was him and he was transported to a local hospital to be checked out.' The sheriff's office previously told KOIN 6 News that Sawyer was familiar with the area and added that he was an experienced biker using a bike suitable for the area. It is not yet clear what led to Sawyer's extended stay in the forest. A GoFundMe was set up while Sawyer was missing, and as of Thursday morning, it had raised nearly $16,000. Mountain biker missing in Oregon, prompting search and rescue mission: authorities
A mountain biker was reported missing in Oregon after not returning home from a biking trip in Mount Hood, according to authorities. Ralph Sawyer, 52, was reported missing on Friday around 10:30 p.m. – two hours after he was expected to return home after leaving that morning for a mountain biking trip, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office wrote in a news release. A search and rescue mission was immediately launched to locate him, the sheriff's office said. "Sawyer has a long history of mountain biking in the area and is familiar with the terrain," the release noted, adding that the bike used was specifically designed for gravel roads. The man had still not been found as of Monday, but officials said his car, a blue Kia Soul, was located shortly after midnight on Saturday with his cell phone inside. Sawyer is described as 6'1" with brown hair. He was last seen wearing an orange bike helmet, blue shirt and black biking shorts. The search for Sawyer has been centered along East Still Creed Road to Veda Lake and Kinzel Lake, along with the U.S. Forest Service roads around Trillium Lake, located about 40 miles southeast of Portland. Officials said about nearly 40 searchers were involved in the search on Saturday and 70 were mobilized on Sunday, covering hundreds of miles by ground and on vehicles, including ATVs and motorbikes. Technical rope teams were deployed to search over steep terrain while drones and a helicopter from the Oregon National Guard searched from the air. An Air Force Reserve Command combat search and rescue unit and K9 units were deployed on Monday in addition to the groups involved in search efforts over the weekend.
