When Rekha Revealed The Greatest Compliment She Received From Amitabh Bachchan: "He Gave Me The Opportunity To..."
New Delhi: Headlines on film portals once buzzed with reports of Rekha's rumoured association with Amitabh Bachchan. In an old Rediff interview that has resurfaced, Rekha had revealed the best compliment she believes she ever received from Amitabh Bachchan. Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan are most fondly remembered for their performances and chemistry in Silsila. Some of their other hits include Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Suhaag, Do Anjaane and Ram Balram. What's Happening In an old interview that has caught the Internet's attention again, Rekha once revealed the impact of working with a co-star like Amitabh Bachchan for many years. She had also spoken about the most memorable compliment that the Don actor had ever given her. She told Rediff, "I think the only compliment he has knowingly or unknowingly paid me was that he gave me an opportunity to work with a great co-star like him. That is the biggest compliment I have ever received." Furthermore, she added, "Look, when we started working together, we were at a very impressionable stage. Each one left his or her impression on the other. If you saw a crowd in those days from a top angle, you just saw a whole sea of heads with the Amitabh hairstyle." She also said that she does not deny that Amitabh Bachchan's unique style was sometimes seen in her performances. The Love Story That Never Took Off Amitabh Bachchan married fellow actor and his co-star of several films, Jaya Bachchan, in 1973. In the 80s, when rumours of Rekha's association with Amitabh Bachchan were all over glossy magazines, director Yash Chopra gave an interview to BBC Asia's Sonia Deol about Silsila. Yash Chopra said, "I was always on tenterhooks and scared because it was real life coming into reel life. Jaya is his wife, and Rekha is his girlfriend; the same story is going on. Anything could have happened because they are working together." Silsila, a Yash Chopra film about an extramarital affair, did not find many takers in 1980s India. The film was declared a commercial flop. However, decades later, Silsila has gained a cult status; a legend that has endured, largely because of the trio at the centre: Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha. In A Nutshell In an old interview, the Umrao Jaan actress spoke about the one compliment from her co-star Amitabh Bachchan that she cherishes the most. She also opened up about traces of Amitabh Bachchan's style that influenced her performances.

‘He gave me an…': When Rekha spoke about what she considers the greatest compliment Amitabh Bachchan ever gave her; how working with someone you admire changes you
Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha's electrifying on-screen chemistry, especially in Silsila (1981), has long fascinated audiences — fuelling conversations, headlines, and speculation for decades. While Silsila remains their most iconic and talked-about film, the duo shared the screen in several other hits that captured their effortless rapport including Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Suhaag, Do Anjaane and Ram Balram. Their pairing became symbolic of a golden era in Hindi cinema. But beyond the characters and camera lenses, Rekha once opened up about something more personal — how working closely with a co-star over many years can shape you. In an interview with Rediff marking her 25 years in the film industry, Rekha reflected on her journey and shared insights that resonate beyond fame. 'Look, when we started working together, we were at a very impressionable stage. Each one left his or her impression on the other. If you saw a crowd in those days from a top angle, you just saw a whole sea of heads with the Amitabh hairstyle,' she said. Whether traces of Bachchan's style showed in her performances, she admitted, 'I don't deny it.' Recalling a moment of critique, she added, 'I agreed with him,' when told she had mimicked Bachchan in Madam X. She also revealed what she considers the greatest compliment he ever gave her: 'I think the only compliment he has knowingly or unknowingly paid me was that he gave me an opportunity to work with a great co-star like him. That is the biggest compliment I have ever received.' Jai Arora, counselling psychologist and co-founder of Kirana Counselling, tells 'It's incredibly common, more than we realise, for people to unconsciously adopt little things from those around them. A way of laughing, a dressing style, even how someone pauses mid-sentence. When we're at an impressionable age or stage, like starting a new job, falling in love, or entering the public eye, we're like soft clay, and you also want to be assimilated into the existing circle and be liked. We absorb. And often, the people who leave the biggest imprint are those we admire the most. And in creative fields where energy constantly bounces off each other, it's natural to start carrying echoes of someone else's presence. It's not imitation, it's influence.' For many of us, being chosen — being seen, included, collaborated with — feels far deeper than any spoken admiration. Especially when it comes from someone we look up to. It says, 'I trust you. You belong beside me.' 'That unspoken respect stays with us long after the project ends. This can also sound like a mark of respect and validation of your work or character, that 'you're in the inner circle now,'' explains Arora. 'Both are possible,' says Arora. 'Once a certain version of you gets social validation, it is easy to associate the limelight or attention to that trait only and not you as a whole. And hence, when, not if, with time one would change, this can feel like a loss of identity.' But more often, admiration just adds layers — it lets us experiment, try on someone else's strength, rhythm, or poise until we find what feels like 'us.'

Rekha, Dharmendra's heartwarming reunion steals the spotlight at 'Loveyapa' screening
Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's Loveyapa will be out in UAE cinemas on February 7. Ahead of its official release, a special screening was held in Mumbai on February 4 that saw a number of stars in attendance. Among the notable personalities present were Bollywood legends Rekha and Dharmendra, whose reunion captured the attention of attendees and fans alike. Rekha, who exuded grace in a stunning gold and white silk saree, made a striking appearance with her signature red sindoor. As the paparazzi captured her, she posed gracefully for the cameras and engaged in light-hearted conversation with Dharmendra and Aamir Khan outside the venue. Rekha and Dharmendra's bond, forged over decades of collaboration on screen, was on full display as they shared a joyful moment together. The two have shared screen space on projects such as Ram Balram, Kartavya, Kahani, and Kasam Suhag Ki. One of their most memorable collaborations remains the song Rafta Rafta Dekho Aankh Meri Ladi Hai, from the the movie Kahani Qismat Ki. Other major personalities at the event included cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who attended with his wife, Anjali Tendulkar, as well as political leader Raj Thackeray. The evening also saw Bollywood's beloved couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, making a stylish entrance hand-in-hand at the venue. Speaking of Loveyapa, the leads recently shared their views on the film. "I have one complaint from Khushi Ji. Like, I am a professional actor too. I used to come on time, but she always reaches half an hour before the assigned time. It's very annoying. If there is a call time of 6:00 AM, she reaches the set at 5:30 AM. She always arrives early while I always come on time," said Khan. In response, Khushi said: "I get tense even if I am only five seconds late. My hairstylist and makeup team always message me to not come before them. It's a habit I developed from my childhood. I always come early. Sometimes, the generators start after I reach the set."
