Construct a memorial to mark historic occasion of KRS reaching the brim in June, says CM
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the authorities to construct a memorial to mark the historic occasion of the Krishnaraja Sagar filling to the brim in the month of June. Addressing a gathering at Brindavan Gardens after offering bagina to the KRS, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the KRS, which was constructed in 1932, had never reached its full reservoir level of 124.8 ft in the month of June. 'History has been created this year. The reservoir has reached its brim in June itself,' he said, adding that the data of reservoir levels was available since 1940. The construction of the reservoir, has a storage capacity of 49 tmcft of water, began in 1911 and completed in 1932. Since then, it has reached its maximum level for 76 years, he said. He instructed MLA for Srirangapatna Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda and officials of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) to take up work on the foundation stone for the construction of the memorial. The historic occasion should be marked because the KRS irrigates 1.85 lakh acres of land and serves drinking water to the people of Mysuru, Mandya, Bengaluru, and other places, he said. Recalling that the KRS did not reach the full reservoir level in 2023 when the Congress government came to power, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Opposition 'superstitiously' began claiming that he, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and the Congress government had brought misfortune to the State. Pointing out that it was nature that controlled rainfall, Mr. Siddaramaiah described the Opposition leaders as 'foolish and superstitious'. Mr. Siddaramaiah issued directions to the Irrigation Consultative Committees of all the reservoirs in the State - KRS, Tungabhadra, Hemavathi, Kabini, Harangi, Upper Krishna Project, Narayanapura, etc. - to take a decision to release water to the canals. All the reservoirs in the State are full and hence, water should be released to irrigate the agricultural fields. The Chief Minister said the State government has allocated ₹3,000 crore to the CNNL for developmental works this year. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said more than ₹2,000 crore will be spent on irrigation in the Cauvery basin area, out of which ₹1,000 crore for Mandya district alone. A large number of canals and sub canals will be taken up for repairs and modernisation, he said. Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy said the custom of offering bagina at the KRS began during the tenure of former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs in 1979. After Urs, it was Mr. Siddaramaiah. Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda said the Chief Minister was in favour of holding the bagina at the earliest as the reservoir had reached its brim for the first time in its history. 'The programme was hastily organised in two to three days,' he said.

Yoga Day marks confluence of cultural and architectural heritage
Yoga, which is recognised by the UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, unfolded at heritage sites in a blend of the living tradition of spiritual growth and wellness, with the architectural legacy of India, on Saturday. The International Day of Yoga was held at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Keshava temple at Somanathapur in Mysuru district, Hoysaleshwara temple complex at Halebid in Hassan district, and at the Dariya Daulat Bagh, the summer palace of Tipu Sultan, in Srirangapatna, Mandya district. An official from the Archaeological Survey of India said that yoga day celebrations used to be conducted at various heritage sites in the past as well. But this year, it was conducted on a larger scale as it was the 11the edition of the International Day of Yoga. In Somanathapur, the Yoga Day unfolded against the backdrop of 13th-century Keshava temple, which was built during the Hoysala period, and is renowned for ornate sculptures and unique architectural style. The event was organised under the supervision of staff from Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru, representatives from Archaeological Survey of India, and there were about 750 participants in all. The Yoga Day was also celebrated on the Halebid museum premises within the Hoysaleshwara temple complex. In Srirangapatna, the event was organised in the sprawling gardens of Dariya Daulat Bagh which is a protected monument under the ASI. MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, ASI official A. Sunil and others led the event, and there were nearly 350 participants, including students from Government PU College and High School. Mr. Sunil said arrangements were made for viewing the Yoga Day celebrations led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Vishakapatnam, on giant LCD screens. The yoga performance commenced soon after and followed the common yoga protocol issued by the Ministry of Ayush. The theme for this year's event was 'Yoga for One Earth One Health'. Apart from yoga in heritage sites, the event was organised across the region including in educational and government institutions. In Mandya, the district administration conducted the event at the PET cricket grounds. Deputy Commissioner Kumar said that India has become synonymous with yoga and described it as a slice or a symbol of the country's culture. He underlined the importance of incorporating yoga into one's lifestyle to reap its health benefits. Purushotamananda Swami of Adi Chunchanagiri Mutt Educational Trust said yoga should not be confined to one day in a year, but should be part of one's lifestyle. Trinetra Mahant Shivayogi of Chandravan Ashram said yoga day was an Indian festival celebrated across the world. The Yoga Day was also celebrated at various places in Chamarajanagar and Kodagu districts.

Cheluvarayaswamy: Ensure quality seeds for farmers
Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy directed the officials to ensure that quality seeds are available to the farmers on time. Speaking at a meeting in Mandya on Friday, the Minister said issues related to property damage owing to rains, road repairs, etc., should be taken up on a priority basis, and relief should be provided under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme. The officials were instructed to remain in their designated headquarters to respond to the grievances of the farmers. Srirangapatana MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda suggested that soil testing be conducted in several villages in each hobli and based on the results, farmers should be encouraged to cultivate suitable crops. Deputy Commissioner Kumar provided details on the district's rainfall situation, seed availability and distribution, stock of fertilizer, etc. The Minister released a poster on crop insurance. Melkote MLA Darshan Puttanaiah, MLC Dinesh Gooli Gowda, MySugar chairman Gangadhar, Mandya zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Nandini and others were present.

CESC launches green drive to mark World Environment Day
Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) on Friday launched a green initiative as part of World Environment Day. Free saplings were distributed to over 8,000 officers and staff across five districts. They were told to plant two saplings each. The campaign was formally inaugurated at CESC colony in Kesare here. A sapling plantation drive was jointly organised by CESC, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), and a federation of local organisations. CESC Chairman and MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda urged the citizens to join hands in preserving the environment. 'Our daily activities are harming the environment, despite conservation efforts. A healthy environment is directly linked to our well-being. Our ancestors led healthier lives even without modern facilities. Now, there is a need for living in harmony with nature,' he said. CESC Managing Director K.M. Munigopal Raju said all CESC offices have been instructed to organise week-long environmental programmes. Each office must plant a minimum of five saplings. Over 50 mahogany saplings will be distributed to the staff, who can plant them in their workspaces.

Workshop for officials to address consumer grievances effectively held
Consumer complaints can be effectively resolved at the officer level itself, thereby avoiding legal escalation, said Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, MLA and chairman of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC). He was addressing a one-day legal workshop jointly organised by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) and the CESC at the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Engineers' Association auditorium at Kadakola near here. The workshop was attended by chairpersons, members, and officials of various consumer grievance redressal forums. This workshop is aimed at equipping officials with legal understanding to address consumer grievances effectively, Mr. Bandisidde Gowda said. 'When consumers encounter problems, they generally approach local officials. If those officials handle the issues with seriousness, most complaints can be resolved swiftly without reaching courts or regulatory bodies,' he observed. He said that failure by officials to fulfill their responsibilities often compels consumers to seek legal remedies. 'We have seen several such instances. However, if every officer works with dedication, the number of complaints reaching the commission or judiciary can be reduced. Due to the commitment of both officials and elected representatives, our region has witnessed a decline in grievance cases,' he claimed. Inaugurating the workshop, KERC member H.K. Jagadish highlighted the importance of legal literacy among officials. Electricity is indispensable in today's world. Understanding the evolution of electricity laws helps in resolving consumer complaints more efficiently, he said. Mr. Jagadish traced the history of electricity laws in India, noting that the first law was enacted in 1887 during the British rule with a focus on safety. Today, the electricity sector functions under the Electricity Act of 2003. With power being generated from multiple sources, consumers have now become central stakeholders in the legal and regulatory framework besides transmission and distribution subjects, he added. KERC member Javed Akhtar pointed out that there is a lack of public awareness about grievance redressal forums. 'Many consumers visit local offices to resolve their issues but remain unaware of formal complaint forums. This information gap discourages consumers from filing complaints,' he said. He urged that all Escoms should publish complaint procedures prominently on their websites, mobile apps, and notice boards for the benefit of public. KERC secretary Siddeshwar, Mysuru zone chief engineer D.J. Divakar, Hassan zone chief engineer Harish Kumar, CESC chief financial officer G. Renuka, and other senior officials were present. Technical presentations were conducted after the inauguration.
