Construct a memorial to mark historic occasion of KRS reaching the brim in June, says CM

The Hindu30-06-2025
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the authorities to construct a memorial to mark the historic occasion of the Krishnaraja Sagar filling to the brim in the month of June.
Addressing a gathering at Brindavan Gardens after offering bagina to the KRS, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the KRS, which was constructed in 1932, had never reached its full reservoir level of 124.8 ft in the month of June.
'History has been created this year. The reservoir has reached its brim in June itself,' he said, adding that the data of reservoir levels was available since 1940.
The construction of the reservoir, has a storage capacity of 49 tmcft of water, began in 1911 and completed in 1932. Since then, it has reached its maximum level for 76 years, he said.
He instructed MLA for Srirangapatna Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda and officials of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) to take up work on the foundation stone for the construction of the memorial.
The historic occasion should be marked because the KRS irrigates 1.85 lakh acres of land and serves drinking water to the people of Mysuru, Mandya, Bengaluru, and other places, he said.
Recalling that the KRS did not reach the full reservoir level in 2023 when the Congress government came to power, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Opposition 'superstitiously' began claiming that he, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and the Congress government had brought misfortune to the State.
Pointing out that it was nature that controlled rainfall, Mr. Siddaramaiah described the Opposition leaders as 'foolish and superstitious'.
Mr. Siddaramaiah issued directions to the Irrigation Consultative Committees of all the reservoirs in the State - KRS, Tungabhadra, Hemavathi, Kabini, Harangi, Upper Krishna Project, Narayanapura, etc. - to take a decision to release water to the canals.
All the reservoirs in the State are full and hence, water should be released to irrigate the agricultural fields.
The Chief Minister said the State government has allocated ₹3,000 crore to the CNNL for developmental works this year.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, said more than ₹2,000 crore will be spent on irrigation in the Cauvery basin area, out of which ₹1,000 crore for Mandya district alone.
A large number of canals and sub canals will be taken up for repairs and modernisation, he said.
Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy said the custom of offering bagina at the KRS began during the tenure of former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs in 1979. After Urs, it was Mr. Siddaramaiah.
Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda said the Chief Minister was in favour of holding the bagina at the earliest as the reservoir had reached its brim for the first time in its history. 'The programme was hastily organised in two to three days,' he said.

Rahul Gandhi gets bail in controversial defamation case over remarks on Indian Army

A Lucknow court on Tuesday granted bail to Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi after he appeared in a defamation case filed over his purported remarks on Army personnel, his lawyer said. The case relates to alleged defamatory remarks against Indian soldiers made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, his counsel, advocate Pranshu Agarwal, told news agency PTI. Following his appearance, the Additional CJM Alok Verma-led MP-MLA Court granted Gandhi relief on furnishing two bonds of ₹ 20,000 each. The bail was effected after Gandhi furnished a bail bond and sureties as directed by the court. Gandhi was summoned as an accused after the court took cognisance of the defamation complaint. The Congress leader had moved the high court but failed to get relief. Gandhi appeared in a courtroom full of lawyers. He was taken to the judge's chamber, where the formalities of filing bond and sureties took place. Congress party's state unit president Ajay Rai and in-charge Avinash Pande also accompanied Gandhi. "He (Gandhi) is scheduled to attend the court hearing and would return to Delhi later in the day. He is likely to come to Uttar Pradesh again to visit his constituency Raebareli over the next few days," Rai told PTI before the hearing. Security was beefed up along the route of his travel and in and around the court premises. The defamation complaint was filed by one Uday Shankar Srivastava, a retired director of the Border Roads Organisation (equivalent to the rank of colonel in the Army). The complaint alleged that on December 16, 2022, Gandhi, while addressing various media personnel and the public during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, mentioned the clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese Army on the border of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 (2022) and said that "people will ask what all about Bharat Jodo Yatra, but will not ask even once about the beating of our soldiers by Chinese soldiers". The complainant alleged his sentiments were hurt by Gandhi's statement about the alleged beating of Indian soldiers by the Chinese soldiers. On February 11, the special court ordered Gandhi to be summoned on charges of defamation.

Congress draws parallels between the NRC, and the SIR in Bihar

Taking on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over reports that lakhs of illegal persons from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar had been traced in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) asked if the poll panel would declare the previous elections 'null and void'. 'If this is true, then the elections in which the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has won, they did it with the votes of people from Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. Those elections should be declared null and void,' Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said during a press conference at the party headquarters. The ECI should not start an exercise like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the name of revision of electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. The SIR should not be about verifying citizenship, which is the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, he added. The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar showed the poll panel had admitted to what the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party, had been saying — that there was a problem with the electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. 'If Rahul Gandhi is right, then the ECI should give the Congress the data it has been asking for. First, they should accept this, and then adopt the right method to rectify it,' he said. 'If they have to revise, it should be done with transparency and given proper time. What would be done in three months? It should be given 13 months or [carried out] over three years... They should revise electoral rolls and not ask for proof of citizenship. That is the job of the Union Home Ministry,' Mr. Kumar said. The Congress leader also expressed grave concern over 'the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar', alleging that criminals had no fear of the law and were roaming around freely in the State. The education system in Bihar had collapsed under the Janata Dal-United (JD-U)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, he alleged. 'I want to tell the youth that if those in power are not bothered about your future, and are only worried about their chairs (a reference to positions of power), then they should be removed from their chairs,' Mr. Kumar said.

Punjab's Anti-Sacrilege Bill Meets Roadblock, Sent To Select Committee

Chandigarh: The anti-sacrilege bill, meant to introduce stringent punishment for desecration of religious scriptures - be it Guru Granth Sahab, Gita, Quran or the Bible -- did not get passed in the Punjab assembly today despite there being a broad consensus on the need for tougher laws. The Punjab Prevention of Crimes Against Holy Scriptures Bill 2025 -- which proposed life imprisonment for culprits -- was sent to a select committee. The BJP had raised questions over the bill, asking why feedback from political and social parties was not sought. The Congress wanted more time to scrutinise it. The Select Committee will include assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and it would take the opinion of all stakeholders and submit its report within six months. The proposal related to this was passed unanimously in the Assembly. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann told the assembly that unlike earlier, those who desecrate the holy scriptures will get exemplary punishment once the bill is passed. "Whenever incidents of desecration took place, our heart used to break. But till date there was no such concrete law in this matter. The culprits used to come out after serving the sentence after a short time. Therefore, it was very important that anyone who desecrates any religious text should get exemplary punishment," he said. Punjab has been trying to pass an anti-sacrilege bill since several instances of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib about a decade ago. Attempts were made in 2016 and 2018 to pass similar bills. In 2016, the Centre thumbs downed the IPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016 and CrPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying all religions should be treated equally given the secular nature of the Constitution. In 2018, the Amarinder Singh government passed two similar bills which did not get the President's nod. The current bill has provisions for strict punishment including life imprisonment for the desecration of holy scriptures. Till now, cases involving desecration of religious texts were filed under IPC and later BNS Sections 298 (hurting religious sentiments, carrying a jail term of 3 years, fine or both), 299 (outraging religious feelings carrying a three-year jail term, a fine or both) and 300 (disturbing religious assemblies carrying a one-year jail term, a fine or both).
