Man Utd problem position deepens for Ruben Amorim despite transfer being agreed

Ruben Amorim has worked tirelessly to improve his Manchester United squad this summer ahead of the new season, but the Red Devils haven't been able to secure every player they've been after Manchester United have been told that Nick Pope is not for sale this summer, despite Newcastle United being on the brink of signing Aaron Ramsdale. The Red Devils have been linked with a number of shot-stoppers, as Andre Onana 's future is up in the air, despite the fact they only signed him from Inter Milan two years ago in a £47.2million deal. ‌ The 29-year-old from Cameroon has made 101 appearances for United over the past two years. But he has only managed to keep 25 clean sheets, conceding 148 goals in total. ‌ The Red Devils are said to have enquired about AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan at the start of the transfer window, only for the 30-year-old to reportedly rebuff the move. An audacious loan move for Aston Villa No. 1 Emiliano Martinez was also made, however, hopes of an agreement there were quickly quashed, with Villa only considering an exceptional offer for the 2022 World Cup winner. ‌ Now, it appears as though United are eager to bring in Newcastle keeper Pope, according to talkSPORT, given his future as a starter at St James' Park is now in doubt. The Carabao Cup winners are closing in on Southampton 's Ramsdale, with the Magpies having agreed a loan deal with an option to buy for the 27-year-old. Ramsdale travelled to Tyneside for a medical on Wednesday, as Newcastle look to bring in fresh talent to challenge Pope for his spot in the team. Despite speculation the England international will look to leave the north east this summer, with Manchester United a potential landing spot, Sky Sports report that Newcastle have no intention of selling him. It is said Eddie Howe is looking for someone to compete with Pope rather than replace him, on account of his admirable performances at St. James' Park since his arrival in 2022. Despite a deal nearing completion between Newcastle and Southampton, Ramsdale wasn't the Magpies' first-choice in terms of competition for their current No. 1. Newcastle prioritised Burnley 's James Trafford for much of the window, even submitting a £31m bid for the 22-year-old who impressed in the Championship last term. However, due to a buyback clause that Manchester City inserted into their deal with Burnley when they sold him to the Clarets for £15m in 2023, Pep Guardiola's team were instead able to clinch him for £27m. ‌ Pope was in goal for most of Newcastle United's 1-0 pre-season friendly loss to the K-League XI at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on Wednesday, with Kim Jin-Kyu slotting home the winner after 36 minutes. Joe Willock's worrying looking injury late on is just another issue for the club to deal with. On top of failing to play a full-strength team for the clash, Newcastle could yet lose talisman Alexander Isak, who is open to parting ways with the club. The Swedish striker wants to explore his options elsewhere, and Liverpool seems the most likely move for Isak, but no agreement has been reached between the clubs as of yet. Elsewhere, the Red Devils have heavily relied on Altay Bayindir for their own pre-season endeavours, with Onana sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in training earlier this summer. The 27-year-old impressed during United's 0-0 clash with Leeds earlier this month, before also playing a major part in the Red Devils' 2-1 win over West Ham on Sunday. He is also expected to start during United's game with Bournemouth at Soldier Field on Thursday, with kick off at 2.30am UK time. Whether United will continue their endeavours of looking at the prospect of signing Pope after the emergence of Newcastle's firm stance remains to be seen. But the right price could turn heads given he is in the last 12 months of his contract.

Report: Goalkeeper on United radar as Newcastle make strategic approach

Nick Pope on Man United's Radar as Ramsdale Eyes Newcastle Move Ramsdale's Rebuild Under Howe According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United are actively pursuing goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in a bid to reunite him with Eddie Howe, who managed the shot-stopper at Bournemouth. Ramsdale is believed to be keen on a Premier League No.1 role to strengthen his claim for a spot in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup. This prospective move could have significant consequences at St James' Park. Should Ramsdale arrive, it would cast serious doubt over Nick Pope's future as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper. Man United's Goalkeeping Dilemma The uncertainty surrounding Pope has reportedly caught the attention of Manchester United. With Ruben Amorim still seeking a reliable alternative or challenger to Andre Onana, Pope's experience and profile are seen as an ideal fit. The 33-year-old, whose contract is set to expire next summer, could become a smart and cost-effective option. Photo IMAGO talkSPORT state: 'Nick Pope could emerge as a target for Manchester United if Newcastle sign Aaron Ramsdale.' This domino effect could see one England international replace another at two of the Premier League's top clubs. Leeds Interest Fades as Perri Signs Earlier this summer, Leeds United were also credited with an interest in Pope, though they have since turned to Lucas Perri from Lyon to fill their goalkeeping vacancy. This likely leaves Manchester United and possibly other top-flight sides as potential destinations should Pope seek pastures new. Goalkeeper Carousel Could Define Season Ahead This transfer chain could see Ramsdale move for more minutes, Pope seek redemption at another top club, and United recalibrate their options after another Onana rocky campaign. It's a rare moment where multiple Premier League clubs could benefit from one bold move — if each piece of the puzzle falls into place. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Manchester United supporter's perspective, this report presents both opportunity and intrigue. Nick Pope might not be the most glamorous name linked with Old Trafford, but he represents consistency, maturity and Premier League experience — qualities sorely missed during Andre Onana's erratic time England. While Onana did improve after his disastrous start, there's still a lingering sense among fans that he lacks the authoritative presence that United keepers like van der Sar or De Gea once brought. Pope's possible arrival would not necessarily spell the end for Onana but would provide genuine competition — something many believe is crucial in elite squads. Also, from a fan's standpoint, the idea of acquiring a current or former England international — especially one with something to prove — aligns with the mentality Ruben Amorim is trying to instil. Pope's professionalism and quiet leadership might be just what the dressing room needs.

David Ornstein: Newcastle agree loan deal for goalkeeper from Southampton

Newcastle Make a Move for Ramsdale: Loan Deal Agreed with Southampton Ramsdale Set for Newcastle Switch Newcastle United have agreed a deal to bring Aaron Ramsdale to St James' Park on loan from Southampton, as reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic. The move includes a significant loan fee and an option to buy the England international goalkeeper. Having fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and then experienced relegation with Southampton, Ramsdale now has a new opportunity to revive his Premier League career under Eddie Howe — a manager he knows well from their time together at Bournemouth. Ornstein revealed: 'Permission has been granted for the England international to travel for medical and finalise the transfer, which is a loan that includes a sizable fee and option to buy.' Ramsdale's arrival comes after Newcastle missed out on James Trafford, who returned to Manchester City from Burnley after Pep Guardiola's side matched the Magpies' £27m offer. Howe Reunites with a Familiar Face Eddie Howe's relationship with Ramsdale could prove crucial in settling the 27-year-old quickly into life on Tyneside. Howe coached Ramsdale during the 2019-20 campaign at Bournemouth, a period in which the keeper truly broke into the Premier League spotlight. Ramsdale's career path since has been eventful. He joined Arsenal in 2021 from Sheffield United and became the Gunners' No 1 for two seasons before being replaced by David Raya in 2023-24. Despite that setback, Ramsdale maintained professionalism and departed the Emirates with 32 clean sheets in 89 appearances. After moving to Southampton in the summer of 2024 for £25 million, Ramsdale featured 32 times in the 2024-25 campaign, but couldn't help the Saints avoid the drop. His contract at Southampton runs until June 2028, with an optional year extension. Goalkeeping Competition Heats Up At Newcastle, Ramsdale will join a crowded goalkeeping department that includes Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, and Mark Gillespie. Still, with Pope's recent injury struggles and Dubravka's form fluctuating, the addition of Ramsdale provides much-needed depth and future planning. Photo IMAGO Having won five senior England caps since making his debut in 2021, and been a part of three tournament squads, Ramsdale brings both experience and ambition. Summer Strategy Signals Ambition Newcastle's pursuit of a top-tier goalkeeper, even after missing out on Trafford, reflects a clear intent to compete across multiple fronts. As Ornstein noted: 'He would join a Newcastle goalkeeping department that already includes his England team-mate Nick Pope.' That friendly rivalry could be exactly what both players need to push their performances to the next level. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Newcastle fan's perspective, this move represents smart business. Ramsdale is still in his prime years and has plenty to prove after a difficult spell at Arsenal and a tough season with Southampton. The fact that it's a loan with an option to buy allows the club to assess his fit without full commitment — especially important given the current FFP climate. The link with Eddie Howe can't be understated. Ramsdale had his breakout under Howe's guidance, and the trust between manager and player could be a huge advantage. While Nick Pope remains a fan favourite, injuries have created uncertainty, and Ramsdale offers a Premier League-proven alternative. Some fans may question the necessity of bringing in another keeper when Dubravka and Vlachodimos are still around, but realistically, neither has shown the consistency required for Newcastle's ambitions. If Ramsdale thrives, he could become the long-term No 1. This deal is low-risk and high-upside. If it doesn't work, Newcastle walk away. If it does, they may have landed a former England No 1 for a relatively modest outlay. That's smart recruitment in any book.

Newcastle agree loan deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (The Athletic). He has received permission to travel for his medical. The Magpies will take the 27-year-old on loan for a sizable fee with an option to buy clause inserted. Newcastle have been struggling to secure their targets this summer, and having missed out on James Trafford, who rejoined Manchester City, the League Cup champions swooped for Ramsdale. The England international is back in the top-flight, where he will help Newcastle in their bid to compete on multiple fronts next season. However, it remains unclear why Eddie Howe's side pushed for Ramsdale. He was part of the Southampton team that suffered relegation to the Championship, the third of his short career. Ramsdale conceded 2.2 goals per game and managed to prevent only 0.14 goals. He ranked 12th in the Premier League for goals prevented. His comments about being unable to concentrate for 90 minutes of a football game also don't sit well. It is worth noting that Newcastle only took him on loan and can decide not to sign him permanently if he does not deliver next season. The Toons will hope that they get the best version of Ramsdale. On his day, he can be a terrific shot-stopper with excellent distribution, but he'd need to perform out of his skin to shed his ominous reputation. Meanwhile, Newcastle are reportedly considering a move for Giorgio Scalvini as they look for centre-back reinforcement to strengthen the defence in front of Ramsdale. The highly rated Atalanta star is still recovering from a long-term injury, but Newcastle monitored him before and after the setback as they ponder a move. Newcastle were chasing Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi but faced competition from Liverpool, forcing them to turn to other defensive options.
