Small Vendors, Big Bills: Blame Game Begins As Vegetable Sellers, Milkmen Fear Hefty GST Burden
The Karnataka government blamed the Centre's order in 2019 in the gazette to all governments regarding what should be done for those with a turnover of up to Rs 40 lakh A wave of distress is sweeping across Karnataka's small-time vendors and traders as Goods and Services Tax (GST) notices, demanding lakhs of rupees, continue to be issued based on digital transactions. The latest to be hit are a milk vendor in Bengaluru and a vegetable vendor in Haveri, both reeling from colossal GST demands, prompting the Karnataka government to shift blame squarely onto the Union government. Ravi, a milk vendor operating from Mariyammana Palya in Bengaluru, has been hit with a staggering Rs 23 lakh GST notice. This comes despite his reported turnover of Rs 59 lakh last year, with the notice specifically targeting transactions conducted within that period. Similarly, in Haveri, Shankargouda Hadimani, who runs 'Sairam Farm Fresh" as a vegetable vendor, has been slapped with a Rs 29 lakh GST demand. The department issued the notice via WhatsApp, citing over Rs 1 crore in digital transactions through Google Pay and PhonePe over the past four years. This has left Shankargouda in deep distress, especially as he primarily deals in fresh vegetables, which are largely GST-exempt. 'I have been in the vegetable and fruit business since 2021. When I first tried to get a GST number, I was told that vegetables and fruits don't require a GST number, and I could just continue my business as is. So, I obtained a municipal license, a vegetable license, and a fruit license, and started my business. It's been four years now, and I've already done business worth Rs 1.63 crore. Now, I've received a notice saying I need to pay a tax of Rs 29.63 lakh for that Rs 1.63 crore. 'How am I supposed to pay Rs 29 lakh? We are small vendors dealing in vegetables and fruits. If they ask us to pay Rs 29 lakh, where do we get it from? This is causing us a lot of trouble. I urge the authorities concerned and the government to resolve this issue. If they help us, we can continue our business smoothly. Otherwise, we will have to remove all UPI scanners and only deal in cash. This will also result in losses for me because my business will be reduced by half, leading to further difficulties." The Karnataka government has been quick to react, with deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar pointing fingers at the central government. 'The government of India has already issued an order in 2019 in the gazette to all governments regarding what should be done for those with a turnover of up to Rs 40 lakh. Why is BJP just watching this? This is their work. They should immediately withdraw this trouble caused to the poor," he said. Shivakumar also revealed the extent of the issue, stating, 'Already, the first notice has gone to 14,000 people. You all have noticed that Rahul Gandhi had already expressed his protest regarding this. The chief minister will call the officers and give whatever guidance is needed." Industries minister MB Patil echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the broad scope of GST. 'Now GST has been imposed on everything. Have they left out even bakeries from GST? So, there is confusion about that today. They will fix it today. They have put GST on bakeries and everything else, have they left anyone out? Have they left out even puffed rice? Whatever is packed, everything comes under it. Milk packets also come under it. Everything that is packed will come under GST. We are saying that the Union government is taking responsibility of all GST," Patil explained. However, former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai accused the state government of shying away from its responsibility in the matter. 'In the context of accepting payments like UPI, they have given notices. I had said that the chief minister should intervene. I saw the chief minister giving a statement that it is a central tax and concerns them. The chief minister is shying away from his responsibility. GST decisions are not taken by the Union government alone. The central and state governments, all the states together, take decisions in the GST Council. Since the chief minister is also the finance minister, I once again urge him to do this work," he said. In response to the growing concern, Siddaramaiah is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting on Wednesday with GST and commercial taxes officials to discuss the ongoing issue of notices being sent to small traders and vendors across the state. For now, the outcome of this meeting is eagerly awaited by the beleaguered small business community in Karnataka. Ravi Kishan's mother was sure his father would kill him, asked him to run away from home: ‘He would beat me everyday… I didn't cry when he died'
Ravi Kishan is a renowned actor and politician today. His acting in Laapataa Ladies and Maamla Legal Hai proved he was more than just a regional star. But to achieve this, he struggled for 33 years. And before that, he lived a traumatic childhood where his father Shyam Narayan Shukla would beat him up almost every day. So much so that one day his mother asked him to run away and handed him Rs 500. 'He will kill you,' the actor recalled. In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Ravi Kishan opened up about his terrifying childhood. 'I was trying to prove to my father that I was worth loving,' shared Ravi Kishan. Recalling his relationship with his father, the actor shared, 'He would often think I was nalayak (useless), and I wanted to prove that I wasn't. He was a priest. Intelligent. He was a proud Brahmin.' 'I once asked him, why do you pray so much? At the end of the day, you are still wearing a torn piece of cloth and have a broken cycle.' This made him angry and he hit me very hard. Ravi then shared it was an everyday affair. 'He would beat me up every day.' He called it fun. He explained, 'Because my dad never spoke to me or pampered me, I would feel him hitting me is the closest to loving me and communicating.' Ravi's dad was very possessive about his image and was dead against Ravi Kishan's love for acting. 'I used to take part in plays in the village. I played the role of Goddess Sita and often wore my mother's saree. This gave him a fit (of anger). He went crazy. He told me, 'Have you gone crazy, do you want to become a nachaniya (a degrading word for artistes).' He wanted me to do farming and sell milk.' His dad's aggression once pushed him to leave the house. 'One day my dad hit me so hard that I had to run away. That day, my mom gave me Rs 500 and said, 'Please go, otherwise he will kill you today.'' After leaving his house, Ravi Kishan tried his luck in Bollywood, but it wasn't fruitful. He would often land small roles and producers always denied him money. They would threaten to cut his screen time if he demanded fees. He had to choose between money and work. After struggling for 10 years in the Hindi film industry, he entered the Bhojpuri industry, which shot him to regional fame (mostly UP and Bihar). It was only after this that his father began to respect him. 'My dad started to respect me after I started to earn a lot of money… when I started giving him air tickets to visit me. After I gave him best of clothes, a good car, and a bungalow. One day he started crying and said, 'Please forgive me. I always misunderstood you.' I fell on his feet and said, 'Please, don't do this.' I saw God in him.' ALSO READ | Boney Kapoor's drastic body transformation: Loses 26 kgs without hitting the gym, skips dinner and has fruits for breakfast Even when their relationship started to take a healthy turn, Ravi still felt under confident around his father. 'I just longed for his love. All I wanted was him to hug me once and not think that I am useless. It was only when he grew old, I could be clingy with him. My fear reduced because he was weak. It was a high when I put my arms across his shoulder. With age, he become my child and I became his father.' During this time, the actor gained the courage to question his father: 'Why did you hit me so much?' His dad replied, 'I thought you would do something wrong.' The actor shared, 'He mostly beat me fearing I might do something wrong. He would randomly smell my mouth and assume I have had alcohol. But, it never was the case. This culture didn't exist then. But he would always assume, 'What if you did'. Mujhe maar padti thi ki 'nalayak hojate toh?' He would always beat me in advance thinking I might end up doing something wrong.' When success followed Ravi Kishan, his dad craved his presence. 'He would often cry and remember me and ask my mother to make him talk to me.' While Ravi made peace with his dad's 'way of love', he still wishes he wasn't physically abusive. 'I would never teach my kids to physically abuse someone. I still think he could have communicated better than simply hitting me. But, I guess it was lack of awareness. One should never hit their children. One must talk. That's the approach I take towards my kids.' In the same interview, Ravi Kishan shared that he didn't cry after his dad's passing. 'I was with him during his last days. When I realised he doesn't have too much time left, I flew him to Banaras in private jet. He died there. I never cried. I still cannot feel it. It will take me days to get over it and I don't know when those feelings will come out. I miss him in every breath.'

EastEnders schedule shake-up sparks 'technical error' as fans spot Jack Branning blunder
EastEnders fans were left baffled during Tuesday's episode as they noticed a blunder due to the ongoing Summer schedule changes taking place due to sporting events EastEnders fans spotted a blunder on DI Jack Branning's (Scott Maslen) work computer during tonight's episode - and it's all down to the schedule changes. Tonight's episode of EastEnders picked up after last night's cliff hanger, in which Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) was arrested by Jack Branning over possession with intent to supply. Today, we saw Ravi being questioned in the police station as Priya's house was searched by the police. However, Ravi wasn't giving in to the officers as he offered "no comment" to all of their questions. Ravi's solicitor then asked for a further private consultation with his client, as the officer in the room was forced to leave the room and suspend the interview. As he left the room, he told his solicitor he needed him to get a message to someone for him - but it was the next part that left fans scratching their heads. The officer questioning Ravi joined Jack outside who was re watching the interview on his computer. "I reckon he's sweating," Jack said about Ravi. The date and time were pinned at the top of Jack's computer, with some eagle-eyed fans noticing the date said 23/7 instead of today's date, 22/7. "This is very particular but did anyone notice Jack's computer date said 23/7?" asked one fan on Reddit. "Defo done before schedule changes came into play." The soap has undergone a number of schedule changes over the summer as huge sporting events including Wimbledon and the UEFA Women's Euros broadcast on the BBC. This week, the soap is undergoing another huge schedule shake-up, as the soap will be taken off air tomorrow night (July 23). This is due to the Women's Euros second semi-final airing on the BBC from 7.30pm tomorrow night, which will see Germany take on Spain for a place in the all important final. To make up for the soap being off air on Wednesday, a double bill aired on Monday, meaning tonight's episode was originally meant to air on Wednesday, hence the date 'blunder'. EastEnders isn't the only soap undergoing schedule changes this week. Emmerdale has been taken off air tonight as the first Women's Euros semi-final, which will see England take on Italy in an attempt to secure their spot in the final. Fans can relax again from next week, as EastEnders will be airing in its usual 7.30pm slot from Monday to Thursday, and as always, will be available to stream on iPlayer from 6am that morning.
