Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out about Real Madrid as he makes Liverpool point
Trent Alexander-Arnold has not been at Real Madrid for long, but the England international's new team-mates have already made an impression following his move from Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that while he knew his Real Madrid team-mates were going to be world-class, he didn't expect them to be so friendly. The England international moved to Los Blancos after the La Liga giants agreed to pay Liverpool £10million to sign him a month ahead of schedule.
He was initially going to move to the Spanish capital as a free agent, but Real's desire to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad prompted them to pay a fee to sign him earlier. In their final group match in the USA, Xabi Alonso deployed the right-back for the full 90 minutes as they beat RB Salzburg 3-0.
It was the latest sign that the defender is further settling into life at the 15-time European champions. Even Alexander-Arnold, who knew the quality they'd possess having faced them five times for his boyhood club, is surprised by the way his new team-mates have taken to him.
Speaking to reporters after Real overcame the Austrian side, Alexander-Arnold said: "Every player is impressing me. From when I played against Real Madrid, [I knew] all the players are world class.
"But just the way the lads are; when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing.
"It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. The settlement period now is done.
"It's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.'
Alexander-Arnold won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup (in its previous format) and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool. Throughout his time at Anfield, he contributed 67 assists, more than any other defender in Premier League history.
When he arrived at his new club, he endeared himself to his colleagues and supporters by speaking in Spanish during his unveiling. While that has gone some way to helping him make a good impression, Alexander-Arnold admits he is still struggling to get to grips with the language.
He added: "Of course speaking and being a part of the conversation is harder. You work hard to try and understand what people are saying and be a part of it.
"But the manager speaks to me a lot individually to make sure I understand everything that gets said. The meetings are in Spanish so he goes out his way and the staff go out the way to make sure I understand the game plan. So there's differences but it's just football.'
Real progressed into the last 16 of the competition as group winners. They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, before overcoming Mexican team Pachuca and then Salzburg.
They face Juventus, who were demolished 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group match, in the next round on July 1.

Man Utd face paying four unwanted stars millions to leave as clubs exploit woes
Manchester United want to get a number of big names - Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho among them - off their books but could end up paying fortunes to get them out of Old Trafford Manchester United could shell out millions this summer as they look to get some of their unwanted stars off their books. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony are looking for ways out of Old Trafford - but the Red Devils could end up paying to offload them. Alongside Rashford and Antony, Jadon Sancho was also loaned out last term but the trio are now back in Manchester. They all fell down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim and he's offered no indication that he wants to bring them back into the fold. Alejandro Garnacho was left out of the starting XI to play in the Europa League final and has since angered club bosses by wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Rashford's name whilst on holiday. But potential buyers - or loan destinations - know that United want to get the players off their books and are ready to exploit that situation, reports the Telegraph. Garnacho, Rashford and Antony have contracts until 2028 - with United now expected to subsidise wages even if they leave the club and are playing for a rival. Jadon Sancho will again be allowed to leave after loans in the last two seasons. United will look to negotiate 'salary recovery' from loan deals for their players, but the clubs eyeing their individuals believe their bargaining power has been massively dented by the fact they clearly want those players off their books. Rashford wasn't included in matchday squads in the weeks leading up to his Villa loan last season. He saw his performances increase at Villa Park and he's made it clear that he wants to move to Barcelona, but their priority appears to be signing Nico Williams. Antony produced his best football for years when he moved to Real Betis, helping them reach the Europa Conference League final. He won individual accolades and the Spanish side are keen on having him on a permanent basis. Last term they paid 84 percent of his salary. Garnacho has been told he can find a new home - and then proceeded to put up a picture on social media of him in a rival shirt. Chelsea were previously linked with his services as were Napoli. Manchester bosses have continued to sign players on big wages over the past decade, which has backed them into a corner when it comes to offloading those who failed to deliver.

Rangers star bids emotional farewell to club as he confirms spell has ‘come to an end'
RANGERS will be hoping to shift some players out of the club this summer. But one man who doesn't appear to have an Ibrox future is on his way BACK. 3 Joe Cifuentes played 29 times in the Greek Super League for Aris Thessaloniki Credit: Alamy 3 He now looks set to return to Rangers Credit: Willie Vass Jose Cifuentes was a key transfer target for Michael Beale when he was Rangers manager. The Ecuador international signed a pre-contract deal in the summer of 2023 to join the Light Blues the following January following the conclusion of the MLS season. But the Gers would get the deal done early, paying LAFC £1.2million to land Cifuentes just as the 2023/24 campaign was getting started. The midfielder, capped 21 times by his country, struggled. He made just nine appearances in the league and wasn't able to make much of an impact. Beale was sacked as Gers boss at the beginning of October and Cifuentes found opportunities hard to come by under his replacement Philippe Clement. In February 2024, just six months after joining the Gers, Cifuentes was on the way out. He joined Cruzeiro on loan but his time in Brazil would also come to an end after just six months. That loan agreement was terminated and Cifuentes then headed for Greece, joining Aris Thessaloniki on a season-long loan last August. He would become a key man for Aris, appearing 29 times in the league. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked The club secured European football after finishing fifth and they'll enter the Conference League qualifiers. Aris had the option to sign Cifuentes permanently in a £3m deal but they missed the deadline at the end of May to make it happen. They indicated to Rangers they couldn't afford the fee and re-entered negotiations with the Light Blues. But no agreement was reached and Cifuentes has now bid an emotional farewell to Aris. He'll now head back to Rangers and looks set to show new boss Russell Martin what he can do. Taking to Instagram, Cifuentes said: "Thank you, Aris! 3 "Teammates, coaching staff, fans, and club personnel: It has been a pleasure to share this season with all of you—a season full of challenges that has now come to an end. "On behalf of myself and my family, I thank you for everything we have experienced, and I wish you all the best for the upcoming season!" Cifuentes still has two years left to run on his Rangers contract. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Mikel Arteta accused of making Arsenal transfer mistake with £45m star
William Gallas has accused Mikel Arteta and Arsenal of making a potentially costly transfer mistake. The Premier League runners-up have been one of the more subdued clubs during the summer transfer window and are yet to make any signings. Arsenal are, however, set to welcome three new players to the Emirates Stadium in Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. In terms of outgoings, Jorginho and Kieran Tierney have left on free transfers and Raheem Sterling has returned to Chelsea following his dismal loan spell. Thomas Partey also looks set to leave the club and Gallas believes it would be a mistake for Arsenal not to keep him at the Emirates Stadium. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The Ghana international held talks over a contract extension following arguably his best season with Arsenal but is yet to reach an agreement with the Gunners. Reports claim Partey has now decided to leave, given his current contract expires next week and he has attracted interest from several European clubs. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus have expressed interest in signing Partey, who has made 167 appearances for Arsenal since his £45m move from Atletico in 2020. 'I think with his quality, he could stay at Arsenal,' Gallas told Genting Casino. 'With what he has offered to the club over the last few years, he can easily stay. 'And with their depth right now, I think it is best to add, not replace. I'm not sure of the reasons why he might leave, but I'm not sure it would be the best thing if he left.' The signings of Zubimendi and Norgaard will compensate for Jorginho and Partey's departures from Arsenal. After signing those two midfielders and Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa, Arteta will prioritise a deal for a new striker, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko high on his wishlist. 'Arsenal have been looking for a striker for, I don't know exactly how long, but a top class striker should have arrived at Arsenal two or three years ago,' Gallas added. 'They didn't sign one. They obviously didn't think it was that important to add a top class striker. 'And I think that, when you look at their season, unfortunately, they didn't want the Premier League badly enough on a couple of occasions where they came close – last season, and also two years ago. 'They didn't want it enough to go and add that last missing piece of the puzzle. So now they are being linked with strikers again, just like they were in January. 'I hope they do get one of the strikers they want, because I hope they want the same thing every fan wants, which is to win the Premier League next season. More Trending 'If they want to have a chance at winning the league next season, for me, it depends on if they go and sign a striker who knows the Premier League very well and has proven they can score the right amount of goals at the top level. 'And I think the only player who fits that description right now is Alexander Isak. 'I know it will cost a lot of money, but he constantly scores more than 20 goals and seems to keep improving each year in the Premier League. 'So Arsenal should break the bank for him. He is the last piece of the puzzle, I feel, a perfect striker.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
