M. Night Shyamalan begins filming Jake Gyllenhaal movie in Warren. Here's what happened.

WARREN – As word spread that M. Night Shyamalan would start filming his latest movie in Warren at noon on June 18, people started finding excuses to hang out in the sleepy downtown. Friends Carol Wild, Thom Luthi and Cassie Brimmer lingered over a late breakfast at Rhody Roots on Main Street, next door to the Coffee Depot, where Shyamalan started filming for the Warner Bros. movie "Remain," which is due out just before Halloween in 2026. "It's just exciting they're filming a movie in our town," said Wild. "We want to see," said Teah Sousa, a student on break from Roger Williams University, who hung out at the corner of Main and Jefferson streets with her nana Marie Travers. While most of those gathered on the sidewalks would admit hoping to see a celebrity – "Remain" star Jake Gyllenhaal being the prime target – no one reported seeing any of the glitterati, though a hushed murmur rippled through the crowd when a black luxury van pulled up to the curb and a muscular man hopped out and headed into the Coffee Depot. People asked whether he could be Ashley Walters, one of the movie's leads, but a Brit not widely known to American audiences. Almost as quickly as the morning's commotion began, it was gone, as filming ended as scheduled at 2 p.m. Then, the movie crew was on the road for its next location: the Prudence Island Ferry dock in Bristol. But the movie wouldn't be shot on the dock – at least not until later in the evening. The crew loaded all of its equipment onto the ferry Herbert C. Bonner to film on the waters of Narragansett Bay. Before boarding the ferry, Shyamalan treated the cast and crew to lobster rolls, seafood chowder and corn chowder from a food truck run by the Newport Chowder Company. Then, all the movie equipment was wheeled or carried up the ramp and onto the ferry, which, with a blast of its horn, departed the dock for several hours on the water. Jake Gyllenhaal grabs pick-me-up from Rhode Island coffee shop. Here's what he ordered

While filming an M. Night Shyamalan movie in the area last week, actor Jake Gyllenhaal paid a visit to one of Rhode Island's trendiest coffee shops – The Nitro Bar. Shop founder Audrey Finocchiaro posted a TikTok on June 18 with the caption, "oh and did I mention Jake Gyllenhaal came into @The Nitro Bar today 😭☕️😎." The coffee establishment, which was founded in 2016 as The Nitro Cart, has amassed almost half a million followers on TikTok. It has since expanded to three brick-and-mortar stores – one in Providence and two in Newport. Finocchiaro also posts business-related content to her personal TikTok account, where she snuck the Gyllenhaal news into a video caption. Finocchiaro did not specify which of the three locations Gyllenhaal visited. The shop did not immediately return a request for comment. When a commenter probed Finocchiaro on the star's coffee order, she replied with the details. "Almond milk latte and milk pastries," Finocchiaro wrote. The cafe's menu boasts several fruity caffeinated beverages, including a caramelized banana latte and blueberry matcha. However, the star of the show – and the company's namesake – is the nitro cold brew. It's a cold-brewed coffee infused with nitrogen, which gives it a foamy head akin to draft beer. Gyllenhaal, an Oscar-nominated actor, is set to star in the upcoming 2026 Shyamalan film, "Remain." Providence is the motion picture's primary filming location. Word spread that Shyamalan would film part of his movie last Wednesday in Warren, and many locals were on the lookout for Gyllenhaal and other celebrities. Passersby spotted the "Remain" crew setting up at Coffee Depot on Main Street. Shyamalan and his crew were also seen chowing down on chowder while waiting to board the Prudence Island Ferry in Bristol. Visitors can grab a latte, like Gyllenhaal, at one of The Nitro Bar's three locations. The Nitro Bar is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 228 Broadway in Providence and 404 Thames St. in Newport. Also in Newport, the 2 Pond Ave. location is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: Jake Gyllenhaal visits The Nitro Bar for coffee while filming 'Remain'

Is M. Night Shyamalan starting to film his RI movie? Film crews spotted in Warren June 18.

WARREN − M. Night Shyamalan is starting filming of his supernatural romantic thriller "Remain" in Warren on Wednesday, June 18. Or so says the owner of Stingy Alley, a bar on Main Street. In an Instagram post, the bar is inviting patrons to perhaps witness some Hollywood magic. And, film crews were spotted in Warren on the morning of June 18. The first day of filming for the Shyamalan film started at the Coffee Depot in Warren at the corner of Jefferson and Main streets. The Warren business posted a message on social media announcing they'd be closed on June 18th for "a private event." The coffee shop has windows that look out on the street, forcing the film to bring in production cars that are used as set dressing. This also means that the town has to periodically shut down traffic. Filming for the Shyamalan movie is expected to continue throughout the East Bay over the next several days. "Remain" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor and Ashley Walters. It is expected to be release in October 2026 by Warner Bros. Spoiler alert: What we know about the plot of M. Night Shyamalan's RI movie

Editor's note: This story may reveal the basic premise and broad plot concepts of "Remain," the movie M. Night Shyamalan is filming in Rhode Island this summer. LITTLE COMPTON – He doesn't really consider himself a movie buff, but when Carlos Esteves heard that M. Night Shyamalan would be filming a movie not far from his Tiverton home, he figured it might be worth his while to wander by the site. And bring his phone, with its video camera capabilities. "I enjoy streaming on YouTube. It's my little thing," Esteves told The Providence Journal on Tuesday, June 24. "I like to stream local stuff. I find the movie business interesting." When he got to Gray's General Store, in Adamsville, on Friday, June 20, and again on June 23, he found movie trucks and crews and equipment and started streaming live to his YouTube channel, DisneyWorldFreak. He says he even captured director Shyamalan and star Jake Gyllenhaal. Shyamalan was using the oldest general store in America, established in 1788, to film scenes for his supernatural romantic thriller "Remain," which is due out in theaters for Halloween in 2026. While Shyamalan has said very little publicly about the plot of the movie, a huge clue can be found on Amazon's website. In an unusual arrangement, Shyamalan has teamed up with novelist Nicholas Sparks to tell the same original story, once as a novel and then again as a movie. And while "Remain" the movie isn't coming out until 2026, "Remain" the novel is due in stores in October of 2025. And it's already available for pre-order on Amazon. So, the plot description for the book should tip us off to what the movie is about, right? It's not like Shyamalan to pull a major head fake and make an entirely different movie, is it? (OK, maybe "I see dead people" suggests he might do something exactly like that.) Last warning before spoilers! Anyway, here's what "Remain" the book is about, according to Amazon: New York architect Tate Donovan is designing his best friend's summer home on Cape Cod shortly after leaving an upscale psychiatric facility. Tate is dealing with depression after the death of his sister Sylvia, who revealed that she sees spirits tethered to the living world and that this "gift" runs in the family. When Tate moves into a bed-and-breakfast on the Cape, he meets a young woman named Wren, and they form an instant bond, though they still have much to learn about each other. "Love – while transformative – can sometimes be frightening," the Amazon listing says. "'Remain' asks us all: Can love set us free, not only from our greatest sorrows but even from the boundaries of life and death?" Does that sound like the plot of an M. Night Shyamalan movie? M. Night Shyamalan moves filming of 'Remain' to downtown Newport. Here's where.

NEWPORT – Less than 24 hours after the hottest June day ever in Rhode Island, M. Night Shyamalan and film crews took over Washington Square and Eisenhower Park for a day of filming for "Remain" on Wednesday, June 25. In the early afternoon, action centered on dozens of extras for a crowd scene that included at least simulated live music. At times, vehicular traffic around the square was halted and pedestrians were asked to either wait a moment or find an alternate route. Newport is at least the fourth East Bay community to host filming, joining Warren, Little Compton and Bristol, the latter at least serving as the launching point for a Prudence Island Ferry cruise that included filming on Narragansett Bay and an Instagram post by Shyamalan celebrating the first day of shooting. Filming is expected to last into August at locations around the state, as well as on a soundstage set up in the Cranston Street Armory, in Providence. Temperatures on June 25 in Newport rose into the low 90s, sweltering enough, but not as oppressive as June 24, when the high flirted with triple digits.
