Capcom show what Resident Evil Requiem was going to be before they changed it

Capcom has explained how Resident Evil Requiem started life as an online open world game, and it's chilling to think about. Before Resident Evil Requiem was officially revealed at Summer Game Fest, rumours claimed it would be an open world game starring Leon S. Kennedy. Capcom has since explained why Leon isn't the protagonist, with game director Koshi Nakanishi highlighting how the character is 'actually quite a bad match for horror' because he's not the kind of person who would 'jump at something like a bucket falling'. As such, Resident Evil Requiem features a new 'introverted' lead, in FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft. Following the Capcom Spotlight showcase, the studio has now confirmed it did experiment with an online, open world for Resident Evil Requiem, but these plans were dropped when it realised it 'wasn't what fans wanted'. Speaking in an extended developer diary, which is available to registered members on Capcom's website, Nakanishi shared a brief, blurry glimpse at the early online experiments for Resident Evil Requiem. 'You might have heard some of the rumours, things like an online Resident Evil or an open world Resident Evil, which we spent some time experimenting with,' he said. 'But in the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realised that it wasn't what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board and created what led to Resident Evil Requiem.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. It's easy to imagine how negative the reaction to an online Resident Evil game would be, because there's already been so many bad examples. Resident Evil Re:Verse was Capcom's last (terrible) attempt to make an online multiplayer title in the series, which is set to be shut down on June 29, after being released as a freebie with Resident Evil Village. Before that, there's been asymmetrical multiplayer jaunts in Resident Evil: Resistance, and co-op games like Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil Outbreak. Interestingly, the protagonist in Resident Evil Requiem, Grace Ashcroft, is the daughter of investigative reporter Alyssa Ashcroft – a character from Resident Evil Outbreak. To reinforce the point, Capcom highlighted that Resident Evil Requiem is a 'single-player offline game', and presumably no longer open world, although it didn't exactly specify the latter. All of this seemingly corroborates rumours last month, from series insider Dusk Golem, who claimed development on Resident Evil Requiem began in 2017 with Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine as the protagonists. He said it was originally 'trying to be the opposite' of Resident Evil 7, as a 'big open world multiplayer game', but it got a 'heavy reboot' in 2021 when Resident Evil Village was released. Later in the video on Capcom's website, Nakanishi said the sequel takes the emphasis on fear seen in Resident Evil 7 a 'step further', describing the gameplay as 'addictive fear'. More Trending 'For us, an 'addictive fear' means even though you might be scared, you just can't stop playing,' he added. 'You want to see what's next. You die, but wonder, 'What if I tried this? Next time I'll do it differently'. And when you overcome that fear, the sense of accomplishment is huge. 'You want to keep going – as it's almost addictive. That's the kind of gameplay experience that we are aiming for in Resident Evil Requiem.' The upcoming sequel follows Grace as she investigates a series of deaths in Raccoon City, 30 years after it was bombed in Resident Evil 3. It's set to feature both a first and third person perspective, an option only added via DLC for Resident Evil Village. Resident Evil Requiem is slated to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 26, 2026. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Is Resident Evil 9 connected to RE Village?

Image via Capcom The series Resident Evil has always been based on interconnected stories, and Resident Evil Village (RE8) left fans with multiple unanswered questions. With rumors circulating about Resident Evil 9 (RE9), many fans are wondering if it will pick up where the village has left off. As of now, Capcom has not officially confirmed RE9 yet, the climax of Resident Evil 8, which suggests that the upcoming game can follow the lingering plot threads. Let's break down some clues and figure out how RE9 might be connected to the Village. How Resident Evil 9 Could Continue RE Village's Story Resident Evil 9 - It's Finally Happening! Resident Evil Village wrapped up Ethan Winters' tragic journey, though it also sets the stage for future events. Here are the biggest clues that RE9 will continue the story: Rose Winters ' future The 'Father's Story' epilogue head starts 16 years earlier, showing Ethan's daughter, Rose, as a teenager with strange abilities. She has seen under a shadowy organization (possibly the BSAA or Chris Redfield 's team). Her connection with Mold, she could have been the Resident Evil 9 (RE9) new protagonist, or even a target for new villains in the game. Chris Redfield's ongoing mission Chris has been a major player since Resident Evil 7, and the village left him in a purely complicated position. The post-credit scene in the game hints that the BSAA is using bioweapons, which could force Chris to go rogue in Resident Evil 9. Chris's story is not yet over, and in the next game, Resident Evil 9, he might explore the fight against corruption within the organizations. The legacy of the Megamycete The giant fungal hive mind was destroyed in the village, but its genetic material would still be out there. The villainous group The Connection might return to weaponize its power. If Resident Evil 9 revisits the concept, we could see even more deadly mutations. The BSAA's downfall The ending of Village implies the BSAA has deployed its own bioweapons and has become just as dangerous as the threats they fight, which suggests a moral downfall that Resident Evil 9 could address. While Resident Evil 9 remains unconfirmed, Resident Evil Village laid ample groundwork for a direct sequel. From Rose Winters' powers to the BSAA's corruption, the narrative seeds are firmly planted. If RE9 follows these threads, it could deliver a continuation that satisfies fans while expanding the Resident Evil universe further. Until Capcom makes an official announcement, speculation will continue, but the ties between the two games appear undeniable.

Resident Evil Requiem gameplay features, protagonists, storyline and more explained

There is no doubt that the Resident Evil Requiem has to be one of the most exciting announcements of the recently concluded Summer Game Fest showcase on June 6. The event ended with a bang when Capcom dropped the announcement trailer of the game out of nowhere. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This survival-horror title is going to be the ninth mainline entry of the franchise, following the Resident Evil Village in 2021. This highly anticipated title is going to be released on February 27, 2026 on Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Resident Evil Requiem gameplay features Players will be able to switch perspectives in Resident Evil Requiem. | Image via Capcom The most exciting gameplay feature of Resident Evil Requiem is arguably the option to switch camera perspectives. Yes, players will be able to delve into Requiem into both first-person and third-person perspective. Being a horror-survival title, first-person perspective is an immersive way to play the game. On the other hand, third-person perspective offers unreal freedom about the in-game environment. Another intricate gameplay feature of this title is the classic horror-survival mechanics. For example, players will start off the game as vulnerable characters who are untrained in combat, and later on will learn to deal with the external affairs. Resident Evil Requiem Protagonist Grace Ashcroft is going to be the main protagonist of Resident Evil Requiem. | Image via Capcom. Capcom has already confirmed that Grace Ashcroft is going to be the main protagonist of the game. Now, this surname might intrigue the OG Resident Evil player, because Grace is actually the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, who was one of the main characters of Resident Evil Outbreak, which was released over two decades ago. Also there are rumors and speculations all around the internet that there will be another protagonist in the game along with Grace. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, Capcom is yet to officially reveal the identity of this second protagonist. Resident Evil Requiem storyline Resident Evil Requiem storyline is partly set in Raccoon City. | Image via Capcom Keeping in mind the complications of the whole Resident Evil franchise storyline with so many spin-offs and remakes, it's pretty hard to predict the whole plot of Requiem. But as per the confirmed storyline so far, players will fill in the shoes of Grace, who will embark upon his horrifying journey of investigating her mother, Alyssa's murder at the Wrenwood Hotel. It is also known that some of the storyline is set in the backdrop of Raccoon City. So, it can easily be said that Requiem is going to take players back to 2003 when it all started in Outbreak. Resident Evil pre-order details Resident Evil Requiem pre-order date hasn't been confirmed yet. | Image via Capcom. Despite so many details being revealed by Capcom including the exact release date, the pre-order date is yet to be announced by Capcom. As the game has just been announced recently, players might need to be patient for a bit longer as we are still about eight months far from the game's release. Read More:

Resident Evil Requiem Announced at Summer Game Fest 2025

In an announcement that surprised almost everyone, the final trailer of Summer Game Fest 2025 was for the newest entry in the Resident Evil franchise: Resident Evil Requiem. The official ninth installment in the mainline Resident Evil franchise, the trailer took a markedly different tone than any of its predecessors. Showcasing a more grounded, realistic setting and tone that almost embraces that of Silent Hill rather than of the beloved zombie-filled survival horror series. The trailer seemingly showed off Resident Evil Requiem's protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, who must return to the location her mother was murdered in order to investigate a series of murders. Apparently taking place in the bombed-out ruins of Raccoon City the trailer also showcased a number of familiar locations as well as some new and terrifying ones. While Capcom has been fairly tight-lipped about Resident Evil Requiem, its official website states, 'Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core.' The trailer seemed to show off a combination of more eldritch monsters alongside a human antagonist and possibly the return of classic zombies. Although it was hard to tell during the trailer what was gameplay and what was cutscene, Resident Evil Requiem may maintain the first-person perspective of its predecessors—outside of more cinematic-style cutscenes. But with how Resident Evil Village's 'Winters' DLC was able to adapt that game in third-person, coupled with the success of the Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remakes, it could mark a return to traditional form. However, players will have to wait to experience true survival horror as Resident Evil Requiem is slated for a February 27th, 2026 release.

Resident Evil 9 Executive Producer Trolls Everyone And Actually Announces It

Resident Evil 9's executive producer, Jun Takeuchi, announced today at Summer Game Fest that he was not ready to announce anything about the next main entry in the series. Sorry. See you later! (Update: 7:00 EST PM: Actually, Capcom tricked us and announced Resident Evil 9: Requiem.) Never mind, folks. Capcom and Takeuchi played a fast one on us and released the trailer for Resident Evil 9 just minutes after telling everyone otherwise. The game is out on February 27, 2026, and is coming to PS5, Xbox, and PC. Well, I guess he did say we'd get more info in 'a blink of an eye.' Here's the trailer: In the surprise trailer, we see a woman who is working for the FBI and looking into some strange murders. Then some wild stuff happens, and suddenly we are transported to what appears to be the old Raccoon City police station, but it looks post-apocalyptic, almost. Not sure what's going on here, but I'm excited for fans to dig in and find all the details. And here's how Capcom describes the game from its official website: Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth title in the mainline Resident Evil series. Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core. A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team's depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that's more immersive than ever before. Original story continues below: Fans expected a big Resident Evil 9 reveal during the event today as leakers continued to hint that it was going to happen. And yet, it didn't happen. At one point, the actress who voices Lady D in Resident Evil Village appeared, but that was just to promote a Capcom sale on Steam. Then she appeared again, celebrating the birthday of the series and throwing to Takeuchi, who didn't introduce a trailer, but instead asked fans to wait a bit longer. 'Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March,' said Takeuchi. 'Now, about the latest Resident Evil game you've all been waiting for, bear with us a little longer. Just a blink of an eye more, and it'll be ready.' Rumors have swirled about a new Resident Evil entry following the release of Resident Evil Village in 2021. Though Capcom did hint at Village officially being the eighth entry via its logo, which contained a stylized VIII, the game didn't technically include an 8 in the title, leading some to believe it was a spin-off of Resident Evil 7. And with today's lack of a name or anything else, we will still have to wait and see if Capcom counts Village as a full-fledged eighth entry in the franchise or if the next game will be named Resident Evil 8. It all seems needlessly confusing, but that's to be expected with this series. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
