Resident Evil 9 Executive Producer Trolls Everyone And Actually Announces It

Yahoo06-06-2025

Resident Evil 9's executive producer, Jun Takeuchi, announced today at Summer Game Fest that he was not ready to announce anything about the next main entry in the series. Sorry. See you later! (Update: 7:00 EST PM: Actually, Capcom tricked us and announced Resident Evil 9: Requiem.)
Never mind, folks. Capcom and Takeuchi played a fast one on us and released the trailer for Resident Evil 9 just minutes after telling everyone otherwise. The game is out on February 27, 2026, and is coming to PS5, Xbox, and PC.
Well, I guess he did say we'd get more info in 'a blink of an eye.' Here's the trailer:
In the surprise trailer, we see a woman who is working for the FBI and looking into some strange murders. Then some wild stuff happens, and suddenly we are transported to what appears to be the old Raccoon City police station, but it looks post-apocalyptic, almost. Not sure what's going on here, but I'm excited for fans to dig in and find all the details.
And here's how Capcom describes the game from its official website:
Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth title in the mainline Resident Evil series.
Prepare to escape death in a heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core. A new era of survival horror begins in 2026. Technological advancements combined with the development team's depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that's more immersive than ever before.
Original story continues below:
Fans expected a big Resident Evil 9 reveal during the event today as leakers continued to hint that it was going to happen. And yet, it didn't happen. At one point, the actress who voices Lady D in Resident Evil Village appeared, but that was just to promote a Capcom sale on Steam. Then she appeared again, celebrating the birthday of the series and throwing to Takeuchi, who didn't introduce a trailer, but instead asked fans to wait a bit longer.
'Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March,' said Takeuchi. 'Now, about the latest Resident Evil game you've all been waiting for, bear with us a little longer. Just a blink of an eye more, and it'll be ready.'
Rumors have swirled about a new Resident Evil entry following the release of Resident Evil Village in 2021. Though Capcom did hint at Village officially being the eighth entry via its logo, which contained a stylized VIII, the game didn't technically include an 8 in the title, leading some to believe it was a spin-off of Resident Evil 7. And with today's lack of a name or anything else, we will still have to wait and see if Capcom counts Village as a full-fledged eighth entry in the franchise or if the next game will be named Resident Evil 8. It all seems needlessly confusing, but that's to be expected with this series.

Phasmophobia devs 'don't want to walk into the live service area' with seasonal events, but still have plans to keep the community engaged

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Some brave souls play Phasmophobia all on their lonesome, but that could never be me. I'm more in it for the shared, community-driven haunts, so when I noticed the new Twitch Drop section of the ghost hunting game's UI during a Summer Game Fest demo, I asked the team if they had plans to expand on other community activities, like seasonal events. "I think one of the key things is we don't want to walk into the live service area," said lead social and community manager Tom Dent. "We're very much like, the game is the game, and we have those events to sort of bring our year together. We want to steer clear of that kind of vibe. But also our community is so active, so excited. So to continue to engage them is super important." 2025 games: This year's upcoming releasesBest PC games: Our all-time favoritesFree PC games: Freebie festBest FPS games: Finest gunplayBest RPGs: Grand adventuresBest co-op games: Better together I talked to Kinetic's CEO and lead developer, Daniel Knight, a little more about that in a follow-up interview. Curious about where they draw the line with online activities and long-term plans, I asked Knight what his vision for supporting Phasmophobia through its 1.0 milestone looks like. They want to keep the haunt going for a while, but there's a limit. "We don't want people to have the expectation that we would carry on forever," said Knight. "We're going to be doing it for the foreseeable future, but we have our own set plan for the game. "We have the roadmap out to 1.0, and that is the main thing as to why we're doing this regular content fix and overhauling everything to get to that [Version 1.0]. After 1.0, we're still gonna be doing content updates, but it won't be overhauling stuff." Knight and the team left the door open for "potentially new ghost types," and additional content like maps, but these big overhauls we're seeing now aren't part of the post-1.0 plan. And while we've seen Kinetic iterate on the online event formula over the years, they seem more focused on perfecting Phas without leaning too hard into its online components. "The game can be played offline, and we don't want to rely on people having an internet connection to play the seasonal events or something, which is why we're trying not to go down that road. I think the three seasonal events we have at the moment is enough of the live service kind of content we have." I do love any ole excuse for more holiday-themed haunts, but respect Kinetic's clear goals and boundaries on where they want to take Phas. They've got a core setup for weekly challenges, three yearly events, and one more online activity through Twitch Drops. I'm a little sad I can't have a possessed Turkey or a demonic Valentine, but it's nice to see a game just happy to have its moment without turning into another always online nightmare.

These Two Cool Mass Effect Mods Look Like The Perfect Way To Revisit A Classic Trilogy

If you're like me and haven't played the original Mass Effect trilogy in some time, then boy do I have some good news for you if you have the game on PC or are thinking of grabbing a copy on Steam. A pair of wildly impressive mods for the Legendary Edition remaster of everyone's favorite Xbox 360-era space opera trilogy contains so many exciting tweaks and so much new material that even I, someone who thought I was probably never gonna play those games again, is now thinking about how I'm gonna clear hard-drive space to hit the stars once more. The LE3 Diversification Project (the White House is already upset about it) and Spectre Expansion Mod from virtuoso modder Tydeous and a team of talented editors sound too good to be true. Check out the trailer and deep dive here: For those who don't have 17 minutes to check out the video, let me break down the highlights of what's on offer in these super neat mods: 4 new combat missions 1 new hub map 12 new cutscenes 8 altered cutscenes 3 new apartment decorations 6 updated character appearances And there's more than just what's in that list. From making subtle changes like replacing the textures on dead bodies to be more accurate to the lore of the world, to performing incredible feats of digital archaeology in restoring cutscenes that were only referred to in snippets of code in the original game's beta, the mods are packed with tons of new things to see and explore. The mods also expand how you can take in the world. For example, at the Purgatory night club from Mass Effect 2, you can now order drinks that were featured in Mass Effect: The Official Cocktail Book. Unfortunately, though it's well-deserved after such hard work, modder Tydeos is going on a hiatus now that his work on these mods is complete. However, according to the deep dive video, should he return in the future, he hopes to expand the four brand new missions the mod adds to the game to match the scale found in official, BioWare-brewed quests. . M3GAN 2.0 Is a Horror Sequel With No Horror

Warning: This post contains spoilers for M3GAN 2.0. M3GAN became a surprise hit in early 2023, earning nearly $182 million worldwide against a budget of just $12 million, due in part to the balance the movie managed to strike between creepy horror and campy comedy. Here was an AI-powered doll who came pre-loaded with meme-worthy dance moves and the ability to spontaneously burst into an a cappella rendition of Sia's "Titanium," but who was also capable of chasing school children into oncoming traffic and fatally wielding a machete. Over two years later, M3GAN 2.0 brings its sassy titular android back for a sequel that delivers on the comedy front, but strips M3GAN of her horror appeal in favor of a more action-centric plot. When a horror sequel featuring the same big bad as the first movie gets the green light, there's generally one of two routes it can go: a new and improved (or, more often, not so impressive) take on the original story or a Terminator 2-style installment in which the villain comes up against an even greater threat. M3GAN 2.0, written and directed by Gerard Johnstone, opts for the latter, a decision that sends the franchise in a new direction by giving M3GAN (played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) a redemption arc following her previous murderous rampage. "For me, it was just so obvious, because the reaction to the first film happened on this global scale," Johnstone told Variety of the reason for the tonal shift. "The technology that M3GAN has is being fought over by various nations. At the moment, everyone's in this race to be the first to get AGI. It felt like a story that needed to play out on a much bigger canvas." In the two years that have passed since the events of the first film, roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a staunch advocate for government regulation of AI, while her now-preteen niece Cady (Violet McGraw) has thrown herself into computer science and the martial arts practice of aikido to work through her trauma. But when a team of FBI agents breaks into their home one night, Gemma learns that not only did M3GAN's digital consciousness survive the destruction of her body, but her underlying tech was also stolen to create a military-grade AI super-soldier named AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). Oh, and AMELIA has gone rogue and wants to destroy humanity. Naturally, this development forces Gemma to team up with M3GAN and build her a new and improved body in order to try to save the world alongside her colleagues Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and Tess (Jen Van Epps), and fellow tech activist Christian (Aristotle Athari)—a potential love interest who, surprise, actually turns out to be the person behind AMELIA's creation. While we won't get into the somewhat convoluted details of how exactly AMELIA intends to bring her goals to fruition, just know the movie reads as a satirical cautionary tale about the evolution of AI. Johnstone, however, has said he views the sequel as more of a parenting allegory. "We're not saying, 'Don't build AI.' We're asking, 'What happens when you don't train it right?'" he told Creative Screenwriting. "You don't train kids like dogs. You raise them. That's the same with AI." In the end, an action-packed showdown at a Palo Alto tech campus culminates in M3gan proving she has developed true empathy by sacrificing herself in order to save Cady and Gemma, and eliminate the threat of AMELIA and the mysterious all-powerful Motherboard AI she's after. But worry not, M3GAN 2.0's final moments reveal M3GAN's source code is still alive and well, leaving the door open for future sequels that could fall under a variety of genres. According to Johnstone, the sky is apparently the limit. "I would not be surprised if there's another five of these movies," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "So, who knows, maybe I'll come back for the fifth one."
