CM to honour 402 individuals imprisioned during Emergency
Nagpur: Nearly 50 years after the Emergency was imposed in India, the state govt will honour individuals imprisoned during that period.
As per a Government Resolution (GR) dated May 30, Nagpur district has 402 individual eligible for recognition.
Of these, 241 are from urban constituencies, according to sourced data.
The remaining 161 are estimated to be from rural parts of the district.
Among the city's constituencies, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's constituency, South West, leads with 89 names, followed by Central (50), South (35), West (38), East (14), and North (9). This urban tally makes up for nearly 60% of the district's total, reflecting the significant role played by Nagpur's urban population during the Emergency.

The state-level ceremony will be held at Zilla Niyojan Bhavan in Sadar on Wednesday, June 25, at 11am. Fadnavis will present certificates of honour, signed by him, to individuals detained under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act), DIR (Defence of India Rules), and related provisions during the Emergency period. Recently, the state govt also doubled the fund for the beneficiaries and relaxed some restrictions.

District collector Vipin Itankar has urged all eligible Emergency-era detainees from Nagpur district to attend the ceremony. The recognition comes as part of a broader effort to formally acknowledge those who resisted the suppression of civil liberties between 1975 and 1977.
June 25, 1975, marks the day when fundamental freedoms were curtailed across the country. Press censorship was among the first crackdowns, with newspapers forced to publish only govt-approved content.
In Nagpur, many individuals were arrested for defending free speech, democratic rights, and political dissent.
The GR, dated May 30, also sanctioned Rs 3.43 crore for Nagpur district under the Emergency Honouree Scheme as part of a larger Rs 28.12 crore statewide allocation. District authorities have been instructed to disburse funds to verified individuals and submit an updated report to the state.
While the fund allocation was reported earlier, the newly-accessed constituency-level data provides a sharper insight into the urban-rural distribution. The upcoming ceremony not only marks a historic moment of recognition but also reinforces the importance of preserving democratic values — and those who once paid the price to protect them.

Narayana vows safe drinking water across all civic bodies
Vijayawada: Municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana said the state government is determined to provide safe drinking water to households across all municipalities. Addressing the media after a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at CM camp office on Saturday, the minister stated that tenders have been invited for laying drinking water pipelines to cover 85 per cent of households, with support from the AMRUT scheme. He said Rs 5,350 crore, sanctioned by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, will be used for completing both drinking water and drainage projects. Blaming the previous YSRCP government for lapses in securing Central funds due to failure in releasing the state's share, Narayana stressed the new government's commitment to infrastructure development. On the solid waste issue, the minister said Andhra Pradesh generates 8,000 tonnes of waste daily. While waste-to-energy plants are already operational in Guntur and Visakhapatnam, six new plants are planned in Rajahmundry, Nellore, Kadapa, Kurnool, Vijayawada, and Tirupati. Once operational, they can convert up to 7,500 tonnes of garbage into power. An allocation of Rs 225 crore has been made for new garbage clearing equipment. He also said the government is working to distribute TIDCO houses by clearing Rs 140 crore in pending bank loans for the beneficiaries.
