Porsche Is Using AI To Catch EV Battery Problems Before They Happen

The latest car news, reviews, and features. I'm tired of AI getting shoved into every corner of life in 2025. But, the technology does have uses in cars beyond gimmicks like fake conversational personas. Like sifting through data and identifying trends to optimize an EV battery pack, for example. That's one of the things Porsche is using AI for, and the automaker recently pulled back the curtain on how it's implementing machine learning to make its electric cars better. In a press release from earlier this month, Porsche focuses on two particular aspects of the way it's using AI to monitor battery health. First, there's the component of predictive quality assurance, which boils down to making informed insights into how the battery will age, based on data from across the company's user base. But arguably more valuable than that is the system's ability to detect anomalies, which can stop a potentially serious battery defect before it starts. Porsche doesn't explicitly mention thermal runaway in this release, but that's where my head goes as I'm reading this. In a thermal runaway, a problem with one cell quickly propagates to others. But there may be signs beforehand that something's not right, and that's why it's especially valuable that Porsche says it can monitor battery health on a cellular level and proactively warn customers, with instructions relayed through the owners' app. Porsche recently set a record at Road Atlanta for the fastest lap for a series-production electric car with the Taycan Turbo GT. Porsche Like anything related to safety in the automotive realm, you hope you never have to encounter a situation like this with your vehicle. But knowing these safeguards are in place certainly offers peace of mind. And this kind of deep learning can be leveraged in other areas, too. State of charge and charging speed, for example, should be intelligently managed for any device that incorporates a lithium-ion battery, from your smartphone to your car, to extend the pack's lifespan as long as possible. It's encouraging that Porsche seems to be using AI not to develop an in-car chatbot that will pretend to care about your problems—or something else nobody's ever asked for—but to ensure the long-term performance and safety of its products. They sum it up well in this excerpt: 'For Porsche, AI is a tool that helps the team to understand complex relationships and take all relevant aspects into account.' Using new tech to better nail the fundamentals is the kind of future we can get behind. Got tips? Send 'em our way at tips@

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Just Set Another Lap Record

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT can add another lap record to its growing portfolio. Last month, the electric sedan set a new fast lap at Road Atlanta, beating the previous record by 6.73 seconds, which was set by a Taycan Turbo S. The Taycan Turbo GT lapped the 2.54-mile track in 1: 27.15 despite a few damp spots, setting a record for production electric vehicles. The car that set the new time was a Purple Sky 2025 Taycan equipped with the lightweight Weissach Package, which swaps the rear seats for a carbon fiber shelf and adds a fixed rear wing. The Taycan with the pack can have up to 485 pounds of downforce. Photo by: Porsche Photo by: Porsche Porsche introduced the Taycan Turbo GT over a year ago as the brand's most powerful car ever. The EV produces up to 1,092 horsepower, needing just 2.1 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill. The standard output is 777 hp and 998 pound-feet of torque, which is still an astounding amount of power. Porsche completed its record run at Road Atlanta with the car's Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS NF0 summer performance tires set to 37 psi. The automaker also engaged Track Endurance Mode to lower the battery's starting temperature before the two attempts. Porsche set the previous record in 2020 with a Taycan Turbo S, completing a lap in 1:33.88. The Taycan Turbo GT's latest record arrives after the car ran a 1:42.1 at Brazil's Interlagos circuit in March. The car also set a record at the Nürburgring in early 2024 . Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Becomes Road Atlanta's EV King

Porsche EVs Aren't Only Quick In A Straight Line Porsche has broken its own production EV lap record at Road Atlanta, this time with the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. Back in 2020, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S zipped around the 2.54-mile track in 1:33.88 minutes, and now Porsche has slashed another 6.73 seconds off that time. Piloted by brand ambassador Patrick Long, the newer and more powerful Taycan Turbo GT managed a time of 1:27.15 minutes last month. Although it was equipped with a few optional extras, adverse conditions made the latest Turbo GT's run even more impressive, and this achievement adds to the extreme EV's growing list of lap records. Record-Breaking Taycan Turbo GT Equipped With Weissach Package Source: Porsche Although the latest record was achieved with a stock Taycan Turbo GT (note that the pictures shown here aren't from Road Atlanta, but from Interlagos), the model was equipped with the optional Weissach Package. Interestingly, Porsche doesn't charge extra for this package – the Turbo GT costs $231,100 with or without it. Source: Porsche If you want to set the best lap times, the Weissach Package's enhancements include a special aero package, including a fixed rear wing with a carbon-weave finish and front aeroblades. This derivative weighs 4,925 pounds, 165 lbs less than the normal Turbo GT, and that's due to extreme weight-saving measures like the removal of the back seats. These changes allow the Taycan Turbo GT to hit 60 mph in 2.1 seconds, a tenth quicker than the normal model, and reach 190 mph. Pirelli Trofeo RS tires also helped with traction. 'The new Taycan was so easy to get up to speed, and the brakes were amazing; there was absolutely no compromise in feel or power,' said Long. 'I didn't expect how powerful the Active Ride suspension would be in counteracting pitch, roll, and squat. Road Atlanta puts a lot of load into a car, and the hydraulics kept up with it without any issues, and made sure the tires were always at their best.' Damp Conditions Didn't Hinder Record Attempt Source: Porsche Porsche said that weather conditions changed throughout the day of the record attempt. Morning rain was followed by drier conditions later, with the temperature at around 75 degrees. At the time of the lap, the track was mostly dry, except for damp patches here and there. Porsche said the battery was at 97%, while the tire pressures were set to 37 psi. Using the Track Endurance Mode, the battery's starting temperature was 68 degrees Fahrenheit. 'To be on the safe side, we experimented with traction and stability control settings, Sport PSM and off, and found the car to work just fine with it in Sport; you could see the traction control working on the dash, but it was totally seamless from the drivers seat,' said Long. 'And finally, Attack Mode is intense, I never have felt such a smooth but intense burst of usable power in anything, including race cars!' The Turbo GT was faster around the track than the Panamera Turbo S (1:31.51) and 718 Cayman GT4 (1:32.24). The quickest production car overall (including both gas cars and EVs) was previously the 911 GT2 RS (991), with a time of 1:24.88. However, Chevrolet broke this record earlier in 2025 with the Corvette ZR1 with the ZTK Package, which achieved a blistering time of 1:22.80 minutes. However, among EVs, Porsche remains untouchable. E36 vs E46: Which is your favourite BMW drift car from this epic image?

The opening round of the Formula Drift series gave us this wonderful Bavarian battle It was the opening round of the 2025 Formula Drift Championship this weekend just gone at Road Atlanta, and in the secondary PROSPEC category the final run came down to Dmitriy Brutskiy in an E46 M3 and Cory Talaska in his older E36. Yep, it was a proper Bavarian battle, with Talaska coming out on top for his first win since his rookie year in 2021. As you might expect, the pictures were absolutely excellent. So, which would be your preferred old M3 for a proper drift car build: E36 or E46?
