Robert Downey Jr assembles eye-watering fortune from new Marvel deal

Robert Downey Jr was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade and seemed to be finished with the franchise in 2019. RDJ kicked off the global phenomenon back in 2008 when he first appeared on the big screen as the fan-favourite Iron Man. After Iron Man's death in 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019, it looked like the charismatic actor was finished with the superhero life and went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' four years later. Robert Downey Jr will play Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers films. Pic:for Disney Although, his Marvel retirement did not last long, as last year it was announced that RDJ will return to the franchise in next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday' and the following year's 'Avengers: Secret Wars'. This time, however, the 60-year-old is not returning as the beloved Iron Man and is instead taking up the villainous role of Doctor Doom. The announcement brought about confusion, excitement and overall mixed reactions from Marvel fans. It might not be too much of a mystery though as to why RDJ has returned so quickly after looking at the paycheck the iconic star is set to receive for playing Doom in the next two Avengers movies. Actor Robert Downey Jr. (Photo by) Variety originally reported that RDJ will be making over $80million on the films but according to 'people familiar with the deal', that figure could be closer to $95million. This will be the most RDJ has ever earned over a two-film spell with Marvel but it only adds to a gargantuan sum that he has already accumulated. Variety sources say that the actor has earned between $500million and $600million over the course of seven Marvel movies and three cameos. With a paycheck like this it seems certain that RDJ will be getting the most screen-time in Doomsday, which is set to release on December 18, 2026. RDJ won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2023. Pic:To put these earnings into perspective, the star's Doom payday is almost half of the entire budget for Marvel's recently released 'Fantastic Four: First Steps', which Disney pegged at somewhere north of $200million. It's no secret that Disney and Marvel can afford these big budgets with their blockbuster movies usually turning a mega-profit. Last year, their film 'Deadpool & Wolverine', starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, made $1.34billion worldwide. It had a rough budget of $200million. However, 'Avengers: Doomsday' looks set to be Marvel's most expensive movie to date with massive production costs and a seemingly never-ending cast list, including RDJ's massive deal. It has been speculated that Doomsday could cost upwards of $1billion to make. While that may sound like far too much to gamble on a movie, Marvel probably won't be sweating too much after their last two Avengers films – Infinity War and Endgame – grossed $2.048billion and $2.799billion respectively. No matter how they turn out in the end, one thing is for sure – Robert Downey Jr's bank account looks more and more like Iron Man's with every movie.

Robert Downey Jr. Ditches Iron Man Armor, Pockets $80M+ to Become Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this time, he's not flying in as Iron Man. Instead, he's switching sides, trading his iconic red and gold armor for the dark, menacing mask of one of Marvel's most feared villains: Doctor Doom. Yes, that Doctor Doom. The armored tyrant of Latveria. And Marvel is pulling out all the stops and all the money to make it happen. A Payday Fit for Doom: Downey's Historic Deal According to a bombshell report from Variety, Downey will earn 'significantly more' than $80 million to portray Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, part of the next era of Avengers films. That figure already catapults him into one of the highest-paid actors in movie history for a single role. But this deal isn't just lucrative. It's legendary. Downey's previous stint with Marvel saw him rake in an estimated $500 million to $600 million, thanks to starring roles in Iron Man (2008 to 2013), four Avengers movies, and lucrative cameos in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Captain America: Civil War, and The Incredible Hulk. Now, Marvel is sweetening the pot even more to bring him back as their flagship villain. The Russo Brothers Return By Downey's Demand This deal didn't fall from the sky overnight. Sources say negotiations for Downey's comeback have been in motion for over a year. And there was one non-negotiable clause that sealed the deal: the return of Anthony and Joe Russo. 'He wanted the Russo brothers helming the movie, and that's the only way he would have it,' a source told Variety. Marvel agreed. The Russo brothers, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will now return to direct Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel. And they're not doing it for charity either. The siblings will reportedly earn $80 million to direct both films, plus performance-based bonuses if the movies hit $750 million or $1 billion at the box office. In a rare move for Marvel, the studio has also agreed to let the Russos produce the films through their own production company, AGBO, a massive deviation from Marvel's usual tight in-house control. Tony Stark Who? Downey Jr. Is Going Full Villain Mode While fans may be divided over losing Iron Man as a hero, industry insiders are buzzing about what Downey's Doom could mean for the MCU. Doctor Doom, Victor Von Doom, is more than just a supervillain. He's a dictator, a scientific genius, a mystic, and one of the most powerful antagonists in the Marvel canon. For years, fans speculated on who could possibly fill the role in the MCU's next chapter. Few imagined it would be the man who defined Marvel's heroic age. But Downey is ready to rewrite his legacy. According to Variety, the actor's new deal also comes with a platinum package of A-list perks including private jet travel, top-tier personal security, and a lavish trailer compound wherever the film shoots. Avengers: Doomsday Is the Most Expensive Marvel Gamble Yet With Robert Downey Jr. headlining as Doctor Doom and the Russo brothers calling the shots, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the most expensive and high-stakes Marvel film to date. The MCU's Phase 6 needs a hit, especially following mixed reactions to recent titles and a crowded post-Endgame landscape. Marvel is clearly banking on nostalgia, star power, and sheer scale to reignite the box office flame. And it's betting hundreds of millions that Downey can do it, even from the other side of the fight. If Doomsday lands the way Marvel hopes, it could mark a new golden age of villain-led franchises. And if it doesn't? At least Downey, the Russos, and AGBO will be walking away with bank accounts worthy of Stark Industries. Star Trek, superheroes, and lots of Stephen King: the best of SDCC 2025

Another San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone, and while there were no explosive reveals like last year's surprise appearance of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, there were quite a few interesting developments. That includes several Star Trek spinoffs, a new sci-fi show on Apple TV Plus, trailers for everything from Peacemaker to Gen V, and a surprising amount of Stephen King. Here's everything notable that you might have missed. We've got our first look at Nickelodeon's newest entry in the animated Avatar franchise, and while Seven Havens doesn't have a firm release date just yet, we now know that Pavi (the new Earthbending Avatar) is good friends with a cat / lemur hybrid. Writer / director Juan Meza-León's upcoming animated feature for DC Studios reimagines the Dark Knight as an Aztec warrior whose life is turned upside down when his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. If it's anything like Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is going to be wild, and after it hits HBO Max on September 18th, we're probably going to be seeing a lot of fan art of these inspired costumes. The feel-good story of this formerly canceled movie continues. We already knew it was coming to theaters next year, and now there's a specific date: August 28th. The kids are not alright in the new trailer for Gen V's upcoming second season. But when the show returns on September 17th, Marie (Jaz Sinclair) and her friends are going to be on a mission that forces them all to level up and become the kind of superheroes that might be able to take down Homelander. No one in their right mind would ever move to Derry, Maine, if they knew what kind of monster was lurking in the town's shadows. But everyone in the new trailer for HBO's It prequel is pretty clueless about Pennywise, who seems like he's going to be eating very well when the show premieres later this year. When The Long Walk was first published in 1979, the idea of people entering a deadly walking competition in hopes of winning a prize probably seemed much more far-fetched. But everything about Lionsgate's new adaptation that's premiering on September 12th feels unsettlingly plausible given the state of the world in 2025. There wasn't much Star Wars presence at Comic Con, but we did at least get the first still image from this Darth Maul animated series coming to Disney Plus next year. As an added bonus, Lucasfilm also showed off a new image from the second season of Ahsoka. Now that Superman has become a headliner in DC Studios' new cinematic universe, HBO Max's Peacemaker series looks like it's stepping its game up and getting much weirder in its second season due out on August 21st. Apple's run of science fiction doesn't appear to be slowing down with the reveal of Pluribus from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. While the teaser doesn't reveal much, we at least know it'll start streaming on November 7th. The gang is back together (again) in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up from the team behind Shredder's Revenge. The latest trailer focuses on the gameplay and is full of some great Anamanaguchi tracks. The Rick and Morty cinematic universe is growing, as Adult Swim announced a spinoff called President Curtis, which will see Keith David reprise the titular role as he deals with everything from 'interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.' No word on when it will air. Another Star Trek spinoff is coming to Paramount Plus, but this one focuses on a fresh cast of recruits at the academy in a futuristic San Francisco. There's no date yet, but it'll be streaming in 2026. While season 3 is currently airing, Paramount provided a surprise glimpse at the upcoming fourth (and penultimate) season of the show. It's surprising because, well, there's a muppet. AMC's other Anne Rice adaptations have yet to have any significant overlap. But the network's upcoming series about an organization of humans keeping an eye on the supernatural world seems like it's going to change all of that when it premieres on October 26th. Lestat (Sam Reid) is going on tour in the third season of AMC's Interview With the Vampire series, and it seems like he's doing everything in his power to reveal the existence of his kind to the human world Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. Major Superstar Was Hiding In Plain Sight In ‘Fantastic Four,' Filmmaker Confirms

'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' took in $118 million over the weekend to dethrone 'Superman' and lead the weekend box office. And one scene that had fans talking didn't come during the movie came during the credits. During a mid-credits scene, Sue Storm ― the Invisible Woman ― leaves her son, Franklin, in the living room to get a book. When she returns, Franklin is looking up at the cloaked figure of Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom is holding his mask, while Franklin reaches up and touches the villain's face, which is hidden by the cloak's hood and not seen on camera. Last year, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU to portray Doctor Doom. However, since his face is never seen, many fans have guessed that a stand-in was used for the quick scene. Now, 'Fantastic Four' director Matt Shakman told Phase Hero's Brandon Davis that it really was Downey in the cloak, and that the scene was shot by Anthony and Joe Russo, aka the Russo Brothers. The duo, who directed some of the biggest Marvel films so far, are working on next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday,' in which a revised lineup of heroes ― including the Fantastic Four ― take on Downey's Doctor Doom. It's set to hit screens on Dec. 18, 2026. Related... Anthony Mackie shares his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," as quoted from that comic book movie set in the universe down the street from the MCU. By the end of next year, Robert Downey Jr. will have done both when he finally arrives in theaters as the leader of Latveria and metal-plated bad guy, Victor von Doom. Bringing back the star power and charisma he let rip as Iron Man and using it for evil in the franchise he helped build, the excitement levels are high as to what kind of Doctor Doom he'll be delivering in the upcoming movie. Whatever it ends up being, though, the new Captain America he'll be facing off against welcomes his return. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, current Captain America Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on Downey returning to the MCU and expressed his gratitude for seeing it happen. 'You know, the fun part is Robert Downey Jr. was such an integral part of the beginning of my career at Marvel," he confessed. "It's great to have him back and continue the legacy he built with the MCU.' By the sounds of things, it almost feels like he never left after his original Iron Avenger, Tony Stark, made the killer snap that brought back half the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. Not only working with stars he left behind in the 2019 film, Downey is also welcoming in the newcomers to the MCU that are set to join in on this super-sized endeavor. Speaking to The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, The Fantastic Four: First Steps star discussed what it was like to see the original star of the MCU in action and behind the scenes. 'He's the most incredible human being—soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies, you know," she explained. "And a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's just doing the most amazing work.' Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a while to see this amazing work in action when Avengers: Doomsday lands in theaters on December 18, 2026.
