Robert Downey Jr assembles eye-watering fortune from new Marvel deal

Extra.ie5 days ago
Robert Downey Jr was the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade and seemed to be finished with the franchise in 2019.
RDJ kicked off the global phenomenon back in 2008 when he first appeared on the big screen as the fan-favourite Iron Man.
After Iron Man's death in 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019, it looked like the charismatic actor was finished with the superhero life and went on to win an Oscar for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' four years later. Although, his Marvel retirement did not last long, as last year it was announced that RDJ will return to the franchise in next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday' and the following year's 'Avengers: Secret Wars'.
This time, however, the 60-year-old is not returning as the beloved Iron Man and is instead taking up the villainous role of Doctor Doom.
The announcement brought about confusion, excitement and overall mixed reactions from Marvel fans.
It might not be too much of a mystery though as to why RDJ has returned so quickly after looking at the paycheck the iconic star is set to receive for playing Doom in the next two Avengers movies. Actor Robert Downey Jr. (Photo by)
Variety originally reported that RDJ will be making over $80million on the films but according to 'people familiar with the deal', that figure could be closer to $95million.
This will be the most RDJ has ever earned over a two-film spell with Marvel but it only adds to a gargantuan sum that he has already accumulated.
Variety sources say that the actor has earned between $500million and $600million over the course of seven Marvel movies and three cameos.
With a paycheck like this it seems certain that RDJ will be getting the most screen-time in Doomsday, which is set to release on December 18, 2026. RDJ won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2023. Pic:To put these earnings into perspective, the star's Doom payday is almost half of the entire budget for Marvel's recently released 'Fantastic Four: First Steps', which Disney pegged at somewhere north of $200million.
It's no secret that Disney and Marvel can afford these big budgets with their blockbuster movies usually turning a mega-profit.
Last year, their film 'Deadpool & Wolverine', starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, made $1.34billion worldwide. It had a rough budget of $200million.
However, 'Avengers: Doomsday' looks set to be Marvel's most expensive movie to date with massive production costs and a seemingly never-ending cast list, including RDJ's massive deal.
It has been speculated that Doomsday could cost upwards of $1billion to make.
While that may sound like far too much to gamble on a movie, Marvel probably won't be sweating too much after their last two Avengers films – Infinity War and Endgame – grossed $2.048billion and $2.799billion respectively.
No matter how they turn out in the end, one thing is for sure – Robert Downey Jr's bank account looks more and more like Iron Man's with every movie.

Chris Hemsworth recalls 'out of body experience' performing alongside Ed Sheeran

Australian movie star Chris Hemsworth has recalled having an "out of body experience" while performing alongside Ed Sheeran during one of his shows. The Thor actor, 41, learned how to play the drums as part of the National Geographic series, Limitless: Live Better Now, and joined the Shape Of You singer on stage to play at a concert filled with 70,000 people in Bucharest, Romania. Speaking at a Q&A, he said: "(It was) very much a kind of out of body experience and and there's something about being in unison and in time with, not just a band, but a mass group of people. "And I imagine it was sort of like a universal prayer or whatever, where people got together, and this sort of intention to point towards something positive in the same direction that there would be some interconnected experience. "And that's what it felt like. I felt like it was kind of beyond me at that point. I was just floating along for the ride." Hemsworth also reflected on the first series of the show and said: "The first season almost killed me, emotionally and physically. That was by design." He continued: "We discussed, what, if we're going to do a second season, what would we tackle? What new science is there? What we could expand upon." The first episode of the series, titled Brain Power, follows Hemsworth as he takes on the challenge of learning to play the drums, which culminates in the surprise live performance with Sheeran. Hemsworth also climbs a frozen 600-foot wall to see if there is a benefit to breaking out of his comfort zone and and embraces special forces pain training in South Korea. The movie star and his family attended the series London premiere on 17 July. The National Geographic show will be coming to Disney+ on Friday 15 August.

The live show, which first launched in 2023, aired on Friday nights in the funnyman's native Birmingham. During its first two series Joe was joined by celebrity guests including Danny Dyer, Alesha Dixon, Greg James, Ross Kemp and Daisy May Cooper who would take part in hilarious skits. His aunties Pauline and Margaret also appeared and became firm fan-favourites among viewers last year. The Sun understands it's hoped the show will return for a third series - but for now Joe is taking extended paternity leave following the birth of his son. Late Night Lycett typically airs in April, meaning pre-production should be getting underway now. An insider said: "Late Night Lycett is a hugely popular format and one that Channel 4 want to keep on air. "Joe's witty one-liners as well as the show's comedy and feel-good vibe means it's not shy of attracting big names out on a Friday evening like Alesha Dixon and Elizabeth Hurley. "Channel 4 are keen for another series but at the moment Joe has taken extended time off to be with his newborn son and family. "It means meetings around the future of Late Night Lycett have not been able to take place. "Bosses are respecting his decision and when he does return to work, talks will take place about whether to commission a new series." 4 Joe Lycett's Channel 4 show will remain off air while he takes extended paternity leave Credit: Getty

Dolly Parton named Guinness World Records icon

US country star Dolly Parton has been named a Guinness World Records icon for holding 11 record-breaking titles. As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the company – which lists world record achievements – has honoured the Jolene singer, 79, with an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the Egot – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – aka the "Grand Slam of showbusiness". Craig Glenday, editor in chief at Guinness World Records, said: "Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extends far beyond the musical world. "There are so many projects close to her heart – poverty relief, education, medical research and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign – and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propels Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her." Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Drake, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. Parton, who is from Tennessee, released her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly in 1967 and had a run of hits in the 1970s. By the 1980s she was a huge star and made her movie debut in screwball comedy 9 To 5. Her most recent album was Rockstar, released in 2023, and she recently featured in a version of Sabrina Carpenter's Please Please Please. She is also the co-owner of the Dollywood Company, which operates Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
