Russell Martin has revealed that Rangers are closing in on the transfer of Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama and that defender Robin Propper is set to leave Ibrox. Gassama has met up with his prospective new teammates during their training camp at St George's Park in England this week, but the deal for the 21-year-old is being held up by financial difficulties at his current club. I think with Sheffield Wednesday and the difficulties they are experiencing, which is tough for them. Obviously, we've been here this week with them and I know a few of their guys and played with a couple of them and worked with a few of their staff members as well. So we're waiting on their end to be sorted, but I think we fully expect Gas to be our player, hopefully very soon. "He's different to what we've got. I think we need a point of difference in the squad. We need a few and he'll be one of them, hopefully." Gassama would become the sixth new Rangers signing of the current transfer window, following Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, Lyall Cameron, Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard through the Ibrox door. Martin confirmed that Robin Propper has been granted permission to speak to his former club Twente back in the Netherlands after a fee was agreed, while fellow defenders Leon King, Ben Davies and Clinton Nsiala are not training with the main group and could move on. 'We accepted a bid, so it's a case of whether it's what Robin wants and agreeing personal terms,' said Martin. 'But I've been really impressed with him as a guy, but we've signed centre-halves and it will be difficult for him to play.' Strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are also doing their own personal training work and Martin offered an update on the forward areas of his team amid speculation of interest from European clubs in the duo. "I think we've made a few additions, so we have a lot of players in certain positions that we're quite happy with, but then outside of that, I think the squad's been fairly not balanced in the way that we would like. But, of course, we can't have 40 players in the building, so I think we have to make sure there's a balance of that as well. "I don't know [if a striker would have to leave before we add another]. We have three or four at the moment, so young Josh [Gentles] has done really well as well.

'Gullible' Rangers reminded £20m spree is pocket change to Celtic as confident Hotline caller laughs it up at rivals
Russell Martin is now truly up and running at Rangers having secured five new signings ahead of the coming season and more are on the way. Conor Coady in advanced talks over a move from Leicester City and Wolves defender Nasser Djiga closing in on loan switch and new Ibrox owners 49ers Enterprises have pledged £20million into helping revamp the squad. But one Hotline caller has reminded Gers that their new-found wealth is nothing compared to what Celtic have in their coffers on the other side of the city. Scott Kerr, Glasgow, called to say: "The gullible mob from Govan think the 49ers with £20million in the bank are the best thing since sliced bread. That's buttons compared to the millions the Hoops have." Champions Celtic have picked up Sweden international Benjamin Nygren and rookie Japanese defender Hayato Inamura for minimal transfer fees but supporters are still clamouring for some real big money arrivals at Parkhead this summer. However, William Hutchison, Aberdeen, is relaxed about the situation given the club's success at unearthing previously unknown gems in recent seasons. He said: "I agree no need to panic over the signings but then signing players we haven't heard of maybe is a bit worrying. But then look at the other players we signed who no one had heard of, they went out, made people take notice and became legends." Gerry McDonald, Kirkintilloch, went one step further by pointing out the irony of criticism from Rangers fans on the Hotline about Celtic's recruitment so far this summer. He added: "The hilarity continues with the input from Messrs Flett, Lavelle, and co. Once again, they have introduced a new dimension to the well-worn concept called irony, with their criticisms of Celtic's summer signings (so far). All I can say in regard to the perennial swoops, coups, war chests etc from down Govan way is 'I wish we had signed household names like you'" Gers defender Robin Propper's future at Ibrox remains up in the air with the Dutchman being heavily linked with a return to FC Twente. And while the Light Blues are standing firm on their evaluations of forward duo Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, has urged the club to ensure that Propper doesn't leave on the cheap. He said: "It's obvious Robin Propper (should say Robbing Propper) is only interested in life away from Ibrox, as it shows in his in his performances. "Propper has agreed terms to go back to his previous club but he is under contract at Rangers. Rangers should play hard ball and say if you want away you buy yourself out of your contract which must cover the transfer fee paid. Footballers live a lavish lifestyle during their short careers and should be held accountable when it's clear they just want money for doing nothing. "Rangers are holding out with Igamane and Dessers but that's for profit not the loss the Gers would take on Propper should Rangers not take a stern stance on the situation." Elsewhere, Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, hopes Kyogo Furuhashi can get his career going again at new club Birmingham City after a disappointing six month stint with Lille but can't get his head around when Brendan Rodgers and Celtic didn't try to bring him back to Glasgow's East End. He called to say: "While wishing Kyogo all the best in his new venture with Birmingham, I'm still puzzled why Brendan Rodgers didn't try to bring him back. I'm also sure if Kyogo could turn the clock back he would never had left. Possibly his recurring shoulder injury was the deciding factor in him not returning. One thing for sure though is he won't need to use his passport in the near future to sample European football." The Old Firm's pedigree in European competition also continues to divide punters on the Hotline. George Wilson, West Sussex, said: "Comical to read that Gordon Ashley is not the only deluded Celtic fan on here claiming to be the world's most successful club. Henry Moffat is now saying the same and compounds his nonsense by claiming success last season against a Euro giant in fact when as usual in Europe they lost the tie. "The height of delusion. Three wins against the worst three teams in the competition sums up the fact they have been an embarrassment in Europe for 15 years. And Sean Beech is now added to these two as another Celtic fan who is obviously also obsessed with Rangers, as all three talk of nothing else." Rangers came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Club Burgge on Sunday but one caller of a Celtic persuasion was keen to poke fun at their rivals in a wider context. Scott McAdam Glasgow, quipped: "What a comeback from Martin's marvels against Club Brugges reserves who are a top European outfit. Oh hold on a minute this the mob that Wilson and Frett said were no better than Malmo or Steaua Bucharest. Keep embarrassing yourself guys."

Robin Propper transfer latest as Twente admit ‘there is no clarity' as they deliver update on pursuit of Rangers star
TWENTE ENSCHEDE have put a deadline of this week to sign their former captain Robin Propper and insist they remain desperate to land him despite him starting for Rangers at the weekend. The Dutch stopper was named in the starting line-up for Russell Martin's first official game as Rangers boss in a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge. 2 Rangers' Robin Propper has been heavily linked with a return to FC Twente Credit: Getty Images 2 The Ibrox side have been given a deadline on deciding his future Credit: SNS Group However, he still faces an uncertain future at Ibrox with Rangers linked with several replacements in his central defensive role. And Twente sports director Jan Streuer has now revealed Propper is one of their three main targets for the summer. He said: "There is no clarity yet with Robin, but we hope to get it very soon. "We have money to buy players. Is that a lot of money? Twente is not a club that is going to pay five, six or seven million for a player. We are not there yet. "But we can do something. "We are also still looking for a commanding attacking midfielder and we would like a very good left winger too. "We are doing it differently now. It is better to be aggressive in the transfer market. You have certain players in mind and you want to make the right choice." Propper captained Twente before his move to Rangers last summer and it remains to be seen whether he will be part of their plans this season. It had previously been reported that his move back to his old stomping ground was already all but done. But twists and turns in the tale have risen from the fact that there's a whole new regime at Ibrox. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked The lack of clarity over the situation, as Streuer suggests, likely stems from both waiting for the new manager to arrive and decide his squad plans, and for decisions to be made in tandem with the new post-takeover bosses. But with Martin's first game out the way and a Propper deadline set, that decision will have to come soon. The head coach has already insisted that both Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are part of his plans despite neither featuring against Brugge. Amid reports of a £15million bid for the Moroccan player Martin said it was an international visa issue that stopped him from playing, and a small injury for his Nigerian teammate. Does arrival of 'quality' Aarons mean 'back-up role' for Tavernier?
We asked for your views on the signing of right-back Max Aarons and what his arrival could mean for Rangers captain James what some of you said:Elaine: It's a start. Russell Martin clearly has knowledge of good players down south who can come in and do a job. Personally, I don't care if it's only a loan. You never know what'll happen by the end of the Can see him playing right-back and Tavernier playing further forward or Fresh energy and different qualities. Hoping Tavernier will be used as a back-up only. Would like to see Aarons start at right-back and Ridvan Yilmaz, if he stays, at left-back. Optimistic of more fresh energy and quality coming in while ridding ourselves of the deadwood, like Robin Propper, Danilo If Tavernier gets any game time this season it should be only if Aarons can't manage for some reason. Time to move along, he's served his time but his time is While Tavernier is probably a better player going forward, he was found wanting so many times last season, especially at the back post. I hope Aarons is a more solid option at the back. Given this is our first signing under Martin and he has been brought in as a right-back, Tavernier surely can't remain as On his day Tavernier was a good servant and defender for us, but age has caught up with him and maybe he didn't have his best season last time, but he can produce something when needed. Aarons is only a loanee, who knows what can come of it if it's a really good season. Fingers crossed he doesn't have injury woes like some others. Things are now moving a bit better, let's hope the rest go through Tavernier is on his last legs, but he will be a record-breaker for a long time. Aarons sounds like he is quality. Good If Aarons adapts quickly to Scottish football, his speed and strength undoubtedly pose a threat to Tavernier. Admittedly he has not scored many goals, but he can defend and gets forward quickly. It is up to Tavernier to produce his past form to keep his place. Nicolas Raskin has the potential to become a great team captain.
