Wegmans testing smart carts at select NY stores: Here's where
Wegmans is testing new smart-cart technology. Pilot programs have begun at Wegmans stores at 6600 Pittsford Palmyra Road, Perinton; 3195 Monroe Ave., Pittsford; and 675 Alberta Drive, Amherst, Erie County, the company said in a statement. A fourth pilot will launch later this month at the store at 6789 East Genesee St. in DeWitt, near Syracuse. Wegmans will be testing smart carts from two different providers, it said. The Perinton and Pittsford Wegmans appear to be using the same provider. Carts available to customers at those stores have touchscreens that allow users to scan items as they go. 'We are limiting the program to these stores as we gather customer feedback to drive improvements,' the statement continued. 'Our goal is to determine if Smart Cart Technology is a fit for the unique shopping assortment offered in our stores and if it meets the shopping needs of our customers.' This isn't the first time Wegmans has tested the technology. Last fall, the company tried out smart carts at three stores, including Perinton and Pittsford. In 2023, it tested an artificial intelligence-powered device at two of its New York stores, including Pittsford. The gadget resembled a tablet with handles and clipped to the top of a regular shopping cart. Using a system of cameras and sensors, it identified items placed in carts and detected items being removed. In 2022, after two and a half years, Wegmans pulled the plug on its popular SCAN app, which enabled customers to scan groceries using their smartphones, bag them as they shopped and pay for them using a single code at self-checkouts. Too many people were walking off with unscanned items, the company said, resulting in unacceptable losses. Reporter Marcia Greenwood covers general assignments and has an interest in retail news. At Home declares bankruptcy: See which NY stores are closing
At Home, a Texas-based home décor and furniture retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, June 16, citing "broader economic and retail-specific market pressures," according to court documents. As part of the filing, 26 At Home stores nationwide will close by Sept. 30, including two locations in New York: 6135 Junction Blvd., Rego Park 300 Baychester Ave., Bronx Court documents attribute the bankruptcy to a combination of rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and unsustainable customs and tariff costs. Over the past year, At Home had already closed six locations in an attempt to stabilize operations. The company noted that many of its remaining stores are now operating at "sub-optimal performance levels" due to the financial strain of maintaining physical locations in today's retail landscape. As part of the bankruptcy process, ownership of At Home will transfer to a group of hedge funds and investment firms based in New York City and San Francisco. Why are people protesting in NY today? What to know about ‘No Kings' rallies
Thousands of New Yorkers are taking to the streets today as part of the 'No Kings' protest movement, a nationwide day of defiance aimed at what organizers describe as a growing threat of authoritarianism in the United States. More than 90 events are planned across the state on Saturday, June 14, from small towns to major cities — joining over 1,500 protests nationwide. The coordinated demonstrations, which organizers say could become the largest single-day mobilization since President Donald Trump returned to office, are focused on defending democracy, rejecting concentrated wealth and power, and opposing what they view as the militarization of government. The name "No Kings" is a pointed reference to the founders' vision of an American republic without monarchs — a direct critique, organizers say, of President Trump's recent policies and public rhetoric. The movement's mission, according to its website, is to 'reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.' The protests are strategically aligned with Trump's Flag Day military parade in Washington, D.C., which commemorates the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary — and coincides with his 79th birthday. Organizers argue that the parade reflects a growing cult of personality around the presidency that is incompatible with democratic norms. Organizers have emphasized a firm commitment to nonviolent action. A disclaimer on the No Kings website urges all participants to de-escalate confrontation and leave weapons — even legally permitted ones — at home. Events are happening across New York in communities large and small. In the Rochester region alone, protests were scheduled in Irondequoit, Brighton, Pittsford, Fairport, Henrietta, and Geneseo, among others. In the Lower Hudson Valley, rallies are taking place in Yonkers, Mount Kisco, and Larchmont. For those looking to join or learn more about the protests, a full map of protest locations and times is available at This article originally appeared on Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: 'No Kings' protests in NY: What to know

Man dies after being attacked by his own dog in upstate NY
A man who was attacked by his own dog at his home has died, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Emergency responders were called to a residence on Kendall Road in Riga, New York, around 8:20 p.m. Monday, when it was reported that a man was attacked by his dog, said sheriff's spokesman Deputy Brendan Hurley. Richard L. Dambrowski, 46, suffered "significant physical trauma" to his face and neck from the encounter, which occurred inside the house, Hurley said. Dambrowski was pronounced dead at the scene, Hurley said. The Humane Society of Greater Rochester's humane law enforcement team responded to the home and euthanized the dog, an American pit bull terrier, Hurley said.
