More (Photo byfor Maritime Music) Billy Joel: And So It Goes — a two-part documentary about the life and career of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician, is coming soon to streaming on Max. Joel, 76, has been in the news lately after revealing that he's been diagnosed with the brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, leading him to cancel tour dates while he is being treated for the disease. Joel, of course, is the rock and roll icon behind such classic hits as 'Movin' Out,' 'Only the Good Die Young,' 'Big Shot,' 'It's Still Rock and Roll to Me,' 'Allentown,' 'Uptown Girl,' 'A Matter of Trust,' 'We Didn't Start the Fire' and 'River of Dreams.' The legendary singer, songwriter and musician came back after a decade and a half of not writing or recording any new original rock music in February of 2024 with the sweeping ballad 'Turn the Lights Back On.' Warner Bros. Discovery announced Tuesday that part one of Billy Joel: And So It Goes will premiere on Max on Friday, July 18, and debut on HBO linear at 8 p.m. ET/PT. In its press release announcing the release date of Billy Joel: And So It Goes Warner Bros. Discovery said that Billy Joel is interviewed in the documentary, as well as members of his band and fellow star musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, John Mellencamp, Nas, Pink, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney. In addition, Billy Joel: And So It Goes will feature interviews with Joel's ex-bandmate Jon Small, Joel's ex-wife and former manager Elizabeth Weber, his ex-wives Christie Brinkley and Katie Lee, his daughter Alexa Ray Joel and current wife Alexis Roderick Joel. The official summary for Billy Joel: And So It Goes partially reads, 'The two-part film is crafted around in-depth, exclusive interviews with Joel, illuminating the key moments that forged his character and the events and muses that inspired his music for more than six decades. 'Exploring revelatory new territory and enriched by dynamic video and performance clips from Joel's musical oeuvre, many never before seen, the documentary gives a window into his process and chronicles his monumental successes, while diving into the hidden complexities of his life. From his childhood on Long Island, shaped by the absence of his father, to his first bands, the women he loved, and the colleagues and collaborators who both supported and betrayed him, Joel's decades of songwriting mirror his rich, complicated autobiography. "Sharing origin stories about such chart hits as 'Just the Way You Are,' an ode to his first love, and 'Uptown Girl,' famously about second wife Christie Brinkley, the film points to the close symbiosis between his life and art, revealing the music that transformed his career, sculpted his legacy, and saved his life.' Part 1 of Billy Joel: And So It Goes premieres on Max and HBO linear on July 18, with Part 2 debuting a week later on July 25.

Mick Ralphs, founding member of Mott the Hoople and Bad Company, dies aged 81
Mick Ralphs, singer, songwriter, guitarist and founding member of the classic British rock bands Bad Company and Mott the Hoople, has died aged 81. A statement posted to the band's official website on Monday announced Ralphs' death. Ralphs had a stroke days after what would be his final performance with Bad Company at London's O2 Arena in 2016, and had been bedridden ever since, the statement said. No further details on the circumstances of his death were provided. Ralphs is set to become a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Bad Company in November. 'Our Mick has passed, my heart just hit the ground,' Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers said in a statement. 'He has left us with exceptional songs and memories. He was my friend, my songwriting partner, an amazing and versatile guitarist who had the greatest sense of humour.' Ralphs wrote 1970's Ready for Love for Mott the Hoople, later revamped for Bad Company's 1974 debut album, which also included the Ralphs-penned hit Can't Get Enough. He co-wrote Bad Company's 1975 Feel Like Makin' Love with Rodgers. Born in Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire, England, Ralphs began playing blues guitar as a teenager, and in his early 20s in 1966, he co-founded the Doc Thomas Group. The band would become Mott the Hoople in 1969. He left the group in 1973, soon after it found commercial success with the David Bowie-penned-and-produced All the Young Dudes. He would form Bad Company with singer Rodgers, who had left his own band, Free. They would be joined by Free drummer Simon Kirke and former King Crimson bassist and vocalist Boz Burrell. Kirke said in a statement Monday that Ralphs was 'a dear friend, a wonderful songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist. We will miss him deeply.'

Legendary musician boycotting Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction
Legendary bassist Carol Kaye will not attend her own induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The 90-year-old musician, who was part of a group of session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew, said Wednesday she will not be attending this year's ceremony. 'People have been asking: NO I won't be there,' Kaye wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post. 'I am declining the RRHOF awards show (and Denny Tedesco process)... because it wasn't something that reflects the work that Studio Musicians do and did in the golden era of the 1960s Recording Hits.' According to Rolling Stone, Kaye was featured in Tedesco's 2008 documentary, 'The Wrecking Crew,' about the collective that recorded songs with The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, The Monkees and more in the 1960s and '70s. However, she objected to the Wrecking Crew name, which came from drummer Hal Blaine. Kaye said she started as a jazz guitarist who 'got into recording good music' in the '50s with artists like Sam Cooke. She once replaced a bassist who failed to show for a studio session and soon found it 'easy... to invent good bass lines' — but still gave credit to the group of collaborators. 'You are always part of a TEAM, not a solo artist at all….there were always 350-400 Studio Musicians (AFM Local 47 Hollywood) working in the busy 1960s, and called that ONLY ….since 1930s, I was never a 'wrecker' at all….that's a terrible insulting name,' she wrote. 'I refuse to be part of a process that is something else rather than what I believe in, for others' benefit and not reflecting on the truth – we all enjoyed working with EACH OTHER.' The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes constitute this year's honorees in the 'performer' category, while Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon will also be inducted and recognized with the 'Musical Influence Award.' The ceremony will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the next day.
