Village poo bag scheme aims to cut dog waste
A Lincolnshire village has started a Poo Bag Partnership which aims to encourage people pick up their dog's waste. Community groups and businesses in Great Coates will be handing out waste bags to dog walkers. Between 2023 and 2024, more than 280 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued for dog fouling related offences, North East Lincolnshire Council said Councillor Ron Shepherd said the authority hoped to expand the scheme. "We're glad to be building these partnerships across all areas of North East Lincolnshire," he said. "We appreciate the majority of dog owners are responsible, but it is the minority that need to understand that they have a duty of care as a pet owner. "I urge as many businesses, organisations and charities to become a Poo Bag Partner and help us to stop this issue from blighting our streets." Doorbell footage plea in dog fouling crackdown
Two councils have set up schemes to clamp down on dog owners not cleaning up after their pets. East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it was stepping up efforts to tackle dog fouling and has urged people to send in doorbell videos or CCTV footage of incidents in order to issue fines. North East Lincolnshire Council said it had issued nearly 300 fines between September 2023 and August 2024 for dog-related offences including pet owners leaving dog waste. It said it would be rewarding those who pick up mess left by their pooch through a new scheme. Dog mess can pass on a disease called neosporosis which can affect other animals, like cattle. It can also cause infections in humans. Lyn Healing, an East Riding of Yorkshire councillor, said everyone needed to play a part in helping to keep areas clean. "We know that many dog owners are responsible and conscientious members of their communities, but there are a minority responsible for antisocial behaviour and unsanitary conditions," she said. "We highly encourage everyone to play their part in helping to keep their areas clean and to use technology such as doorbell cameras to assist the council in its work in tackling dog fouling offences." Anyone with evidence of dog fouling incidents have been advised to get in touch with the council. A total of 284 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) of £100 have been issued by North East Lincolnshire Council for dog-related offences including "having no means to pick up, dogs not on leads and dog fouling". The authority said offenders could be prosecuted and face up to £1000 fine if they fail to pay. It has started a "responsible dog ownership" initiative to recognise those who clean up after their pets, with people being offered the opportunity to enter a prize draw as part of the campaign. Ron Shepherd, a North East Lincolnshire councillor, said: "Whilst there are rules that need to be enforced, it's important we reward the people who are acting in the appropriate manner." Large haul of illegal tobacco seized in raids
More than £140,000 worth of illicit cigarettes, tobacco and vapes have been seized from shops in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. North East Lincolnshire Council's trading standards team, working with Humberside Police, confiscated the counterfeit products from several premises during an operation on 21 March. The haul included more than 90,000 cigarettes, 44lbs (20kg) of tobacco and 4,800 illegal vapes. The raids were part of an ongoing operation targeting counterfeit and illicit cigarettes, the council said. Officers raided premises in Pasture Street and Cross Coates Road in Grimsby and Cross Street and High Street in Cleethorpes. A number of the stores were found to have hidden storage areas which were forced open by officers following their discovery by search dogs, trading standards said. Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer communities, said: "Multi-agency operations such as these are keeping these products, that do not meet safety standards and are putting lives at risk, off the streets. "When you buy these products, you could be putting your own health at risk. Not only has no duty been paid on them but they've not been tested to ensure they're safe." Nearly £2.2m worth of illicit tobacco products have been seized in North East Lincolnshire since 2021, trading standards officers said.
