Yankees' plans for Amed Rosario revealed — after years of trying to get him

The Yankees had tried to acquire Amed Rosario multiple times over the past few years. Now that they finally got him, from the Nationals in a Saturday night trade for reliever Clayton Beeter and 18-year-old outfielder Browm Martinez, Rosario becomes the utilityman the Yankees have been missing since Oswaldo Cabrera broke his ankle in May. The right-handed hitting Rosario, who was expected to be available off the bench for Sunday's series finale against the Phillies after arriving from the airport shortly before first pitch, could form something of a platoon at third base with the lefty-swinging Ryan McMahon. But the ex-Met will also be an option at second base and the corner outfield spots, manager Aaron Boone said Sunday, in addition to shortstop 'in a pinch.' 'He provides some defensive versatility, speed and really hits lefties,' Boone said. 'So I think it kind of makes our bench and the balance of our roster a little more workable. And hopefully, get him in some situations where he can impact us, but I think he helps us a lot.' 4 Amed Rosario is pictured during the first inning of the Yankees' July 27 game. Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images Rosario was batting .270 with a .736 OPS in 46 games for the Nationals this season. For his career against lefties, he has hit .298 with a .799 OPS, which is how the Yankees will predominantly use him. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS 'I could definitely see him playing against the lefties and with his defensive versatility, more being that guy that's a really versatile player off the bench for us,' Boone said. As for his viability at shortstop, the position he came up at with the Mets, Rosario has only started 11 games there since the start of the 2024 season, and none since last August. 4 Amed Rosario watches from the dugout during the Yankees' July 27 game. 'We got to look at short, he hasn't been there in a while,' Boone said. 'Certainly in a pinch, I could see that, but kind of viewing him more as third and second and in the corners in the outfield.'

Yankees acquire infielder Amed Rosario in trade with Nationals

James Schiano evaluates the potential of New York Yankees top prospect Spencer Jones, explaining why the 24-year-old outfielder's power production can't be ignored as he's compiled 29 home runs in the minors this season. NEW YORK — The scuffling New York Yankees added infield depth on Saturday night, acquiring Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Clayton Beeter and a minor leaguer. 'When I heard where I was going, I kind of didn't believe it,' Rosario said through an interpreter in Minnesota, where the Nationals beat the Twins 9-3. 'I mean, at some point I kind of knew I was going to get traded, but I didn't know it was going to be today.' The move came hours after New York said star slugger Aaron Judge is headed to the injured list - and one day after the Yankees obtained third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for two pitching prospects. McMahon made his Yankees debut on Saturday in a 9-4 loss to Philadelphia. New York is 21-28 following a 35-20 start and has slipped a season-high 6 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto. 'He's actually been a guy who we've tried to kind of get the last couple of years to varying degrees,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'Provides some defensive versatility, speed and really gets lefties, so I think it kind of makes our bench and the balance of our roster a little more workable.' The versatile Rosario likely will be used mostly at third base, second base and outfield corners, and he also can play shortstop. He's a right-handed hitter with an .816 OPS against left-handed pitching this season, making him a good fit for a platoon with McMahon. McMahon and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. both bat left-handed. And shortstop Anthony Volpe, a right-handed hitter, is batting just .217 in his third major league season. The 29-year-old Rosario was hitting .270 with five home runs, 18 RBIs and a .736 OPS in 46 games and 158 plate appearances with Washington overall. 'I helped a lot, I think,' Rosario said. 'Especially the young players. I kind of showed them the hard work I put every day, so I hope they take that from me.' Rosario was one of baseball's highest-rated prospects when he broke into the big leagues with the New York Mets in August 2017 at age 21. He is a .273 career hitter with 68 homers, 110 stolen bases and a .707 OPS in nine major league seasons. He also has played for Cleveland, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cincinnati Reds. 'I feel great, because whenever teams are in playoff contention they always acquire me towards the end,' Rosario said. 'I just feel really good about that.' Beeter, 26, was 0-1 with a 14.73 ERA in two appearances out of New York's bullpen this season. He was optioned by the Nationals to Triple-A Rochester. The right-hander has made 83 minor league starts, and he struck out 39 batters in 23 2/3 innings over 21 minor league outings this season - his first as a full-time reliever. He was ranked the No. 20 prospect in New York's system by The last-place Nationals also received 18-year-old outfield prospect Browm Martinez, who was hitting .404 (23 for 57) with three homers, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 18 games with the Dominican Summer League Yankees this year.

Yankees Make Another Trade, Acquiring Former Top Prospect From Nationals

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Brian Cashman pledged the Yankees would be aggressive ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and the general manager has kept his word so far, adding another veteran depth piece late Saturday night. The Yankees are acquiring utilityman Amed Rosario from the Washington National, the teams announced Saturday night. In return, New York sent two minor leaguers -- right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez -- to D.C. to complete the deal. Beeter is the better of the two prospects, at least for now, currently ranked No. 20 on MLB Pipeline's Yankees prospects list. Rosario is a heady pickup for Cashman and the Yankees, even after acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The journeyman (who has been flipped at the deadline multiple times in his career) offers two main things: more right-handed hitting depth and positional versatility. Rosario has played shortstop, second base, third base and outfield in his career, so Aaron Boone will be able to move him around the diamond to address the mounting needs. (Photo by) He could get some run in the New York outfield, especially after the Yankees placed Aaron Judge on the injured list with an elbow injury. Rosario certainly won't put up Judge-like numbers in the heart of the New York lineup, but he hits left-handers well (.816 OPS vs. southpaws this season). That might also make him a logical choice to split time with McMahon, a left-handed hitter, at third base moving forward. Rosario broke into the big leagues with the New York Mets in 2017 when he was one of the best prospects in all of baseball. He never quite lived up to those expectations in Queens, though. His best season came in 2019 when he hit 15 home runs and drove in 72 runs. Ultimately, the Mets made him a centerpiece of the Francisco Lindor trade in January of 2021, sending him to Cleveland. Rosario had the best season of his career in 2022 with the Guardians as a four-win player while hitting 11 home runs, driving in 71 runs and stealing 18 bases. He hasn't been able to replicate that success since, though, bouncing around the big leagues for stops with the Dodgers, Rays, Reds, Nationals and now the Yankees. With McMahon and Rosario both in the fold, it's worth wondering whether the Yankees are unofficially out of the running for Eugenio Suarez, the consensus top player available ahead of Thursday's deadline. Yankees trade for Amed Rosario in deal with Nationals: Full details

The New York Yankees acquired Amed Rosario in a trade with the Washington Nationals on Saturday evening, the teams announced. He provides depth as a player who has the versatility to play all around the infield. Rosario has started 20 games at third base and 13 games at second base for the Nationals this season. He's also proven to be trouble for left-handed pitchers. He's batting .299 with an .816 OPS against lefties this season. Rosario joined the Nationals this season after spending time with five other teams over the first eight seasons of his major league career. He signed a one-year deal worth $2 million during the offseason and will become a free agent after the season concludes. The trade came hours after it was revealed that Aaron Judge will be going on the injured list. New York sent over pitcher Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez to Washington. Beeter is a right-hander that's played in five games for the Yankees the past two seasons. Martinez is an 18-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic.
