Yankees Make Another Trade, Acquiring Former Top Prospect From Nationals
Brian Cashman pledged the Yankees would be aggressive ahead of the MLB trade deadline, and the general manager has kept his word so far, adding another veteran depth piece late Saturday night.
The Yankees are acquiring utilityman Amed Rosario from the Washington National, the teams announced Saturday night. In return, New York sent two minor leaguers -- right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez -- to D.C. to complete the deal. Beeter is the better of the two prospects, at least for now, currently ranked No. 20 on MLB Pipeline's Yankees prospects list.
Rosario is a heady pickup for Cashman and the Yankees, even after acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The journeyman (who has been flipped at the deadline multiple times in his career) offers two main things: more right-handed hitting depth and positional versatility. Rosario has played shortstop, second base, third base and outfield in his career, so Aaron Boone will be able to move him around the diamond to address the mounting needs.

He could get some run in the New York outfield, especially after the Yankees placed Aaron Judge on the injured list with an elbow injury. Rosario certainly won't put up Judge-like numbers in the heart of the New York lineup, but he hits left-handers well (.816 OPS vs. southpaws this season). That might also make him a logical choice to split time with McMahon, a left-handed hitter, at third base moving forward.
Rosario broke into the big leagues with the New York Mets in 2017 when he was one of the best prospects in all of baseball. He never quite lived up to those expectations in Queens, though. His best season came in 2019 when he hit 15 home runs and drove in 72 runs. Ultimately, the Mets made him a centerpiece of the Francisco Lindor trade in January of 2021, sending him to Cleveland.
Rosario had the best season of his career in 2022 with the Guardians as a four-win player while hitting 11 home runs, driving in 71 runs and stealing 18 bases. He hasn't been able to replicate that success since, though, bouncing around the big leagues for stops with the Dodgers, Rays, Reds, Nationals and now the Yankees.
With McMahon and Rosario both in the fold, it's worth wondering whether the Yankees are unofficially out of the running for Eugenio Suarez, the consensus top player available ahead of Thursday's deadline.

CBS Quietly Removes Former NFL Star From 2025 Broadcast Crew
CBS Quietly Removes Former NFL Star From 2025 Broadcast Crew originally appeared on The Spun. The NFL on CBS will look a bit different this upcoming season. The network has decided to move on from a three-time Pro Bowler. Last week, CBS unveiled its game announcers for the 2025 regular season. As you'd expect, the ton names like Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Ian Eagle will remain key contributors for the network. Former NFL running back Tiki Barber, however, was left off this list from CBS. He has been a game analyst for CBS since 2019, working alongside Andrew Catalon, Matt Ryan and a few other broadcasters. Though we're not entirely sure why, CBS has replaced Barber with Charles Davis. Here's the 2025 broadcast roster for CBS: Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson Ian Eagle, J.J. Watt and Evan Washburn Kevin Harlan, Trent Green and Melanie Collins Andrew Catalon, Charles Davis, Jason McCourty and AJ Ross Spero Dedes, Adam Archuleta and Aditi Kinkhabwala Even though Barber won't be part of a CBS crew this NFL season, he'll keep himself busy on Sundays. He'll team up with John Schmeelk for gameday broadcasts. "I am really excited to be joining the Giants gameday radio broadcast team on WFAN. This organization has meant so much to me, professionally and personally," Barber said. "The Giants have a long history of legendary broadcasters and Wellington Mara always told them to call it like they see it because our fans know better. I look forward to providing analysis and insight that Giants fans appreciate." The former New York Giants running back will also continue hosting "Evan & Tiki" every weekday on WFAN Quietly Removes Former NFL Star From 2025 Broadcast Crew first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Khabib Nurmagomedov hints at Jack Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev superfight for Madison Square Garden
Jack Della Maddalena appears to have his first title defence already in the works, with the Australian on a collision course with former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. The 28-year-old captured welterweight gold at UFC 315, stunning fans with his victory over Belal Muhammad. Now, a monumental title fight awaits at Madison Square Garden. MORE: UFC Perth main event confirmed as Kiwi gets title audition Makhachev is expected to move up a division for this bout after vacating his lightweight belt earlier this year. His coach and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov hinted at the matchup during a recent fan question-and-answer appearance in New York. "This is his deal with the UFC," Nurmagomedov said. "I don't deal with the UFC. This is his problem, but we have [a] deal with them where he's gonna fight at Madison Square Garden and they said yes." The UFC is yet to officially confirm the blockbuster showdown, but looking at their schedule in years past, a return to the Garden seems likely to go down in November. For Della Maddalena, the challenge is enormous. Makhachev enters the bout with the momentum of four consecutive title defences - two of those over Della Maddalena's countryman Alex Volkanovski. The idea of the Russian stepping up in weight class adds intrigue, presenting questions over whether or not he can implement his dominant wrestling game against a bigger opponent. If finalised, the event would put both men in the frame for fighter of the year discussions, a welcome achievement to their growing legacies.

Yankees are paying 3 players a combined $43.8 million to not play for them
The New York Yankees have always been known for having a lot of money. They may not be the richest franchise in baseball anymore, though. The New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be shelling out even more dough. But the Yankees have one financial flex going for them, if it can be called a flex. And it's this: They're currently paying three players a combined $43.8 million not to play for them. Those three guys are DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Hicks and Marcus Stroman. The number works out to $43,785,714, to be exact. MORE: Cubs' Matthew Boyd has mastered the balk pickoff move Baseball contracts, unlike many of those in other professional sports, are fully guaranteed upon signing. That means when the Yankees get rid of Hicks in the past, or LeMahieu and Stroman this season, they're still owed their money. Stroman was just released after his last start, a bit of a surprise move. And like Stroman, both Hicks and LeMahieu were better before getting their latest Yankees contracts than they were afterward. MORE: Red Sox leapfrog the Yankees in the standings for first time since March As a big-market club with deep pockets, the Yankees can afford to make mistakes in contracts every once in a while. It's still not ideal that these mistakes are costing more than $43 million to guys not currently wearing the pinstripes in any form. The $43 million might not come in handy now, but it could matter greatly down the line. That's very real money that the Yankees won't have from production they aren't getting anyway.
