John Goodman Reveals the 4 Words He'd Say to Roseanne Barr If She'd Talk to Him

John Goodman revealed what he would say to his former co-star Roseanne Barr if he saw her today. After years of estrangement from his TV wife, the actor told Entertainment Tonight he would say four words to Barr if he could: 'Hi, how you doing?' Goodman, who co-starred with Barr on the 1980s sitcom Roseanne for a total of 10 seasons, including a 2018 revival, left it at that as interviewer Kevin Frazier nodded and said, 'I hear you, I hear you.' Goodman's four-word response came days after he told The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn't spoken to Barr in nearly a decade. 'I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,' he said. 'We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' Of his past friendship with Barr, he added, 'We hit it off from jump street. She made me laugh, and I made her laugh, and wow, it was so much fun. …Things are so different now, but it was a special time.' Barr stopped speaking to her former co-star in 2018 after she was fired by ABC amid a racist Twitter scandal. Her lead matriarch character was killed off the Roseanne series. Goodman and the rest of the cast went on to star in The Conners spinoff, which ran for seven seasons, ending in April 2025. Goodman previously defended Barr to the Sunday Times, telling the outlet that he knew 'for a fact that she's not a racist.' In an interview with Variety, the actor said he felt 'bad" for his longtime co-star amid the scandal. 'I just feel terrible about the whole thing,' Goodman said. 'We had a great time. And I love her. She's just her own person. … I miss her. I wish her well.' In June, Barr, 72, confirmed that she no longer speaks to Goodman or her former Roseanne co-stars Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, Sara Gilbert, and Michael Fishman. She also expressed outrage over her character being killed off the show she helped create nearly 40 years ago. "No, I'm not friends with none of them. They're all in the past,' she told Fox News Digital in an interview. 'We don't talk. … They f---ed it all up with their greed and ridiculous stupidity …. F--k them, but I wish them well.'John Goodman Reveals the 4 Words He'd Say to Roseanne Barr If She'd Talk to Him first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 15, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

John Goodman Reveals ‘Roseanne' Co-Star Was His ‘Acting Hero'

John Goodman revealed why it was an easy decision for him to sign on to the Roseanne spinoff, The Conners, in 2018. In a video chat with People magazine, the actor said that his co-stars from the ABC sitcom are some of his 'favorite people" in the world. The sitcom, which ran for seven seasons, from 2018 to 2025, starred several of Goodman's castmates from the long-running Roseanne series, including Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson. But Goodman, 73, told the outlet that working with Laurie Metcalf, the Academy Award-nominated actress who played his TV sister-in-law, was the biggest bonus. 'My acting hero Laurie Metcalf was worth the price of admission,' Goodman said. 'It was worth showing up every day for work just to see what that woman would do. She's magic. She's just she's amazing. And God, she made me laugh. You know, my jaw would drop when I'd watch her. She's so good.' The Conners spinoff was developed after a 2018 Roseanne revival was cut short when series star Roseanne Barr became involved in a racist Twitter scandal. Her iconic character, whom she played from 1988 to 1997 on the ABC sitcom Roseanne and then for one season in a 2018 reboot, was killed off the series while the rest of the cast moved on with The Conners spinoff. Goodman, who is no longer in touch with Barr, told People that he had 'so much fun' in the early years of the show. 'And Roseanne and I have always been able to make each other laugh,' he said. 'I would try to get her to pee her pants laughing, and she obliged me from time to time.' Goodman has admitted that he has not spoken to Barr in years. In a July 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted that. 'I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me. We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' Barr, 72, has said her Conner family is in her past. "No, I'm not friends with none of them,' she told Fox News Digital in June. 'They're all in the past. We don't talk.'John Goodman Reveals 'Roseanne' Co-Star Was His 'Acting Hero' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 22, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Hollywood star shows off huge weight loss at new film premiere

John Goodman showcased his significant 200-pound weight loss at the Los Angeles premiere of his new Smurfs movie, where he voices Papa Smurf. The actor, who weighed nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest, began his weight loss journey in 2007 by stopping drinking. His successful transformation involved hiring a health coach, cutting sugar from his diet, working out six days a week, and focusing on portion control. Goodman noted that unlike previous attempts where he would regain weight, this time he aimed for a slower, more sustainable approach. He also revealed that he has not spoken to his former on-screen wife, Roseanne Barr, for approximately seven or eight years, despite their strong working relationship in the past.

John Goodman Doesn't Speak to Roseanne Anymore: ‘I'd Rather Doubt If She Wants to Talk to Me'

It's been just over seven years since Roseanne Barr was fired from her self-titled series' successful relaunch following a racist tweet about former President Barack Obama's adviser Valerie Jarrett… which she infamously blamed on 'Ambien tweeting.' It has, perhaps not coincidentally, been about the same amount of time since 'Smurfs' star John Goodman has spoken to his sitcom wife. 'I'd rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'We haven't talked for about seven or eight years.' Hall: 'I'm Not Crazy, I Know I'm Not Him' Lena Dunham's 'Too Much': A Guide to All Those Cameos - and Each Wink to Her Own Celebrity Lore Goodman, of course, went on to anchor the spinoff 'The Conners,' which garnered consistently positive reviews, lasted seven seasons and 112 episodes without Barr, whose 'Roseanne' character was killed off. 'I didn't think [the 'Roseanne' reboot] was going to go beyond the initial five or six episodes,' Goodman said. 'I thought it'd be a one-off thing, and then we got picked up, and Roseanne got fired. I thought that was it, and as soon as they dismissed the cast, I picked up 'Righteous Gemstones.' Then we got to do the show again as 'The Conners.' I didn't know how long it would last, but I sure enjoyed it while I was there.' In an expression of his goodwill to the fans, 'The Conners' ended in April with a scene of Goodman alone, breaking the fourth wall and saying 'Good night' while sitting on the show's iconic couch. 'I wanted to do it, and they let me, and they kept it. I thought it was just us saying, 'Good night, folks. Thank you,'' he explained. Goodman's career remains busy as ever. In addition to voicing Papa Smurf in the upcoming animated 'Smurfs' film, out July 18, he's also recently lent his voice to series like 'The Freak Brothers' and 'Monsters at Work' (reprising Sulley from 'Monsters, Inc.'). His HBO series 'The Righteous Gemstones' aired its final episode in May, and he's set to appear in the next Alejandro González Iñárritu film alongside Tom Cruise and Sandra Hüller, due for release in October 2026. 'There are a lot of funny moments in it,' Goodman said, describing the yet-untitled comedy. 'Tom is a force of nature, and it's fun to just hang on and see what he's going to do. He's a 63-year-old professional athlete and artist. He's got the drive and the energy, and I wish I had half of it.'
