Bangladeshi militant group crippled
Ahmad Ramdzan presenting the award to the best academic participant at the event. KOTA KINABALU (July 5): The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has confirmed that the Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB) has been successfully crippled following a series of raids and operations in Peninsular Malaysia since April. Bukit Aman Special Branch I Deputy Director, Datuk Ahmad Ramdzan Daud, said all identified members of the group have been arrested. 'So far, I can say that the Bangladeshi militant group, GMRB, has been crippled. However, we believe there may still be other militant elements that have yet to be detected, and we will continue monitoring the situation closely,' he said. Ahmad Ramdzan made the statement at the Police Basic Training Programme (PULAPOL) Graduation Parade, Series 5/2025, held at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) in Kepayan on Saturday. He highlighted that one of the major challenges in combating radical groups like GMRB is their use of social media to recruit members and spread extremist ideologies. 'Some members of GMRB were recruited through social media platforms, which have become powerful tools for the covert dissemination of radical views. We need to strengthen our technological and cyber-monitoring capabilities to detect these activities early,' he said. While acknowledging social media's role in public engagement, Ahmad Ramdzan warned that it is also being manipulated by foreign militant elements. 'Social media can serve as the eyes and ears of the public for law enforcement, but at the same time, it is exploited for extremism. We remain committed to our responsibilities, with a strong focus on community service,' he added. At the event, a total of 200 trainees completed their six-month police training, which comprised three core modules — Policing Transformation, Mindset Transformation and Policing Management.

US$1.7 million cocaine-laced vape raid: Malaysian police nab 4 men, including 3 Singaporeans
AMPANG JAYA, Selangor: Four suspects, including three Singaporeans, have been arrested by Malaysian police in a drug bust involving almost 10 litres of cocaine contained in 4,958 cartridges of vape liquid. The combined value of the narcotics seized last Thursday (Jun 19) from the suspected members of a drug syndicate is estimated to be RM7.29 million (US$1.71 million), according to a press statement by the Royal Malaysian Police Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department. Its acting director Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin bin Che Ali told a press conference on Monday that the syndicate rented luxury condominiums around Kuala Lumpur as packing facilities for the vape cartridges and narcotics before they were distributed to the international market. The syndicate is believed to have been active since March 2024, and rented an Airbnb condominium unit for RM300 a day for their operations, as reported by Bernama. "The first, second and third suspects were paid from S$100 to 200 (US$78 to US$156) per day while the fourth suspect profited from the sale of the vape liquid," Mat Zani added. 'Each vape cartridge containing 1.9ml of the cocaine liquid can be sold for around RM1,500 per unit on the international market since this type of cocaine drug is difficult to obtain in the Southeast Asian region due to its high price, and is usually used by the elite.' Mat Zani said, as reported by Bernama. One of the suspects arrested tested positive for ketamine. A review of the criminal records of the suspects found that two of them had various records of criminal misdemeanours and narcotics cases. The case is being investigated under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and two suspects are remanded for seven days until Jun 26 and can be sentenced to death by hanging or life imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the whip if convicted. The police conducted two raids last Thursday with the first at around 11.45 am, according to their statement. A Toyota Vellfire car was stopped at the exit of a hotel in Ampang Jaya, Selangor, where upon inspection of the rear seats of the vehicle, the police found 10 boxes containing the vape cartridges suspected to be filled with 9.42 litres of cocaine liquid, the police press statement noted. The follow-up raid saw a 31-year-old Singaporean man detained in the lobby area of the same hotel, who is believed to be the mastermind of the drug smuggling syndicate. A total of four men were arrested, including the driver of the vehicle, a 57-year-old Malaysian citizen, and three Singaporean citizens aged 25 to 46-years-old.

PM Anwar says open to discounts, but not full cancellation of police cooperative debt
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he is open to granting discounts on debts owed by companies under the Royal Malaysian Police Cooperative Bhd (KPDRM), but ruled out a full cancellation. Speaking at KPDRM's annual general meeting, Anwar was responding to a request by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain for the government to write off debts linked to past 'poor business decisions' by the cooperative's companies. 'On asking for debt cancellation, Tan Sri Razarudin — if you owe, you pay lah,' Anwar said in his speech, drawing light laughter from the audience. 'Right, so we can negotiate. I don't think it's right to relieve all. But I feel, based on the performance of the police and the current management, we can give reasonable discounts.' Razarudin earlier announced a dividend payout of 5.8 per cent on subscription capital and 9.2 per cent on share capital for the financial year 2024, amounting to RM36.14 million. He did not disclose the total amount of debt owed by the KPDRM-owned firms or the exact sum he hoped would be cancelled.

PDRM to investigate AI-edited gambling videos
PETALING JAYA: The Royal Malaysian Police will immediately conduct investigations if there are videos promoting gambling that have been edited using artificial intelligence (AI). Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said gambling cases currently often involve influencers and are promoted through images. While the police have not yet received any reports of artists being edited into such videos with the help of AI, Razarudin affirmed that investigations will be carried out and urged victims of these syndicates to lodge a police report. 'For the record, a total of 28 investigation papers under Op Dadu have been opened, involving the arrests of influencers in the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor contingents in 2024. 'Out of those investigation papers, 18 have been charged, while 10 are still under investigation,' he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro. He added that the police have blocked gambling websites from 2021 to 2024. Meanwhile, 7,800 raids targeting gambling syndicates have been conducted from 2024 until this year, resulting in 9,460 arrests. 'The use of advanced technology with high security levels is among the challenges faced by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in providing evidence when suspects are charged in court, particularly in gambling cases involving Online Gambling (Judi Dalam Talian - JOL),' Razarudin was also quoted as saying. Furthermore, he stated that the absence of the term 'online gambling' in Malaysia's existing legislation presents difficulties for law enforcement, with such cases often being challenged in court. 'Outdated legal provisions that have not been amended since 1953 — with penalties that remain low and affordable for syndicates — pose a challenge for the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). PDRM issues a stern warning to individuals involved in online gambling activities that legal action will be taken without compromise. Syndicates and members of the public involved in these activities can face severe punishment, including fines and imprisonment,' he added.
