New Radicals Gregg Alexander Wins BMI Pop Award for "Murder on the Dance Floor" Two Decades After His mid-2000's Song of the Year "Game of Love" Performance Is Unearthed in a Storage Unit After a Family Tragedy
Watch Game of Love performed at BMI Awards from 2005. 'MURDER ON THE DANCEFLOOR' WAS ONE OF RADIO, TIKTOK AND STREAMING'S MOST PLAYED SONGS OF 2024 SPURRED ON BY A MEMORABLE APPEARANCE IN THE HIT FILM SALTBURN PER BIG HASSLE MEDIA LOS ANGELES, June 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Last month New Radical Gregg Alexander was honored at the BMI Awards in Beverly Hills, CA for his work co-writing the iconic copyright, 'Murder On The Dancefloor' watch. The song was initially a global hit in 2001 for his co-writer, Sophie Ellis-Bextor on her LP Read My Lips, and reached #2 on the UK singles charts in 2002. But last year it equaled its original chart position and saw a global resurgence due in large part to it being used in a pivotal scene, which Alexander coined to Billboard as the 'sadly oft true to life' Saltburn. The song was also covered by Interscope Aussie indie duo Royel Otis. Their version hit #1 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became one of Australia's biggest songs of 2024, whilst sparking a global bidding war. Alexander originally planned 'Murder On The Dancefloor' to be the 1st single for his band's critically acclaimed platinum debut, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed, Too. But after writing 'You Get What You Give' not only did 'Murder' not become a single it was abandoned for inclusion on their debut LP. But in March last year Alexander shared a snippet of his original 'Murder On The Dancefloor' demo in a viral Guardian interview just before 'soft releasing' his demo's full length version on DSP's in support of Kamala Harris the week she accepted the Chicago DNC Presidential nomination. The song also honored Doug Emhoff and Michelle Obama both sharing 'You Get What You Give' as their 'walk on' music at the DNC 's August, 2024 convention when they spoke in immediate succession. This year's BMI Award for 'Murder On The Dancefloor' coincides with Alexander winning the rights organization's coveted song of the year award two decades back for his Santana/Michelle Branch 'The Game Of Love', which also won a Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals. This year's BMI song of the year winner was Benson Boone's 'Beautiful Things'. Alexander, who sadly lost his mom in March, was going through boxes and came upon a lost DVD of his band's only live 'hatless' performance of his mid 2000's Santana classic. A song both Tina Turner and Macy Gray sang, and Michelle Branch won a Grammy for, but Gregg's live version has never been seen online! Says Alexander: 'Sophie's 'Murder On The Dancefloor' resurgence tragically happened between 2024's untimely passing of my dad in mid-May and the following March loss of my heartbroken mom, as often happens when a family caretaker spouse unexpectedly passes. 'So after seven weeks by my mom's hospital bedside, alongside 'Unwritten' author and New Radical Danielle Brisebois and my big sister too, when the phone rang and BMI's Barbara Cane surprised me 'Murder' was winning a BMI award—-she also shared wise personal advice. 'Which is: anyone hospitalized can hear and feel you are there! So they will benefit from their fave music playin' and hearing words of support. So always speak aloud of life's best memories— because your loved ones can still hear you amidst your love and eminent security! 'This inspired me to drive to Public Storage to sift through dozens of 'boxes of memories.' Like 80's solo writing tapes and, to wax poetic, yoga-nurse bic pic lisa p GPP Municipal receipts! 90's reels and 'house bros' played 'Buisness!' loan gestures!? Even 2000's nut The Mob hoe 'JT5 bus assault toys!' Troll's racist voicemail rolls from years of yore—that's a quadruple rhyme! 'But most blessedly CD's of mom's fave 70's Carpenters tunes to play her—instead of the heart wrenching tapes my retch sobbing dad made weeks before passing. To frankly shed light on the 'disowned stalker heathen Aiuto,' to quote my dad and means 'Help in Italian!', and those will shake down hour vids ghostwriters visits dad encountered last May. 'So when I stumbled upon a DVD of Dani and my only New Rad-era filmed 'hatless' performance we felt a brief respite from those events. Us soon blastin' music at BMI's office whom christened it a sweet time capsule of my sarcastic 'No Mayo!' mom's fave song of mine, 'The Game Of Love.' 'Watch in memoriam of last month being the one year mark of my lovably unique dad Tony's passing. And honoring now above much missed BMI CEO Frances W Preston! And also with thanks for BMI's current 'sage advice' VP Barbara Cane (and my greatly missed mum Sharon!) please watch New Rad's one-off 'dancin' on the tables' song of the year performance from two decades back. Royel Otis Set August Release for Second Album ‘Hickey'
Indie-pop duo Royel Otis have confirmed their hotly anticipated sophomore album Hickey will arrive on Aug. 22 via OURNESS/Capitol Records. The follow-up to their breakthrough debut Pratts & Pain (2024), Hickey was officially announced on June 24. The album features the single 'Moody,' which was first released on May 9 and teased during a sold-out show in Los Angeles. The track marks a confident return that showcases their distinctive blend of dream-pop hooks, jangly guitars, and melancholic lyricism. More from Billboard Turnstile Soundtrack New Taco Bell Commercial Featuring Tony Hawk Slick Rick Releases Cinematic 'VICTORY' Short Film Starring Nas, Idris Elba & Giggs Tyler, The Creator Hates Your New Podcast: 'We Need Electricians' According to Sydney-based bandmates Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, the album's title was inspired by the emotional intensity of love itself. '…because love bites harder than any other emotion in the world,' they explained in a statement. The album's first single, 'Moody,' was co-written with Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen and produced by Blake Slatkin, known for his work with Gracie Abrams, Omar Apollo, and Charli XCX. The track is 'about a girl,' they said simply, letting the emotionally-charged music speak for itself. However, the single has attracted some criticism for its lyrical content. The chorus line, 'My girl's a b–h when she's moody,' was flagged by fans and media outlets as potentially misogynistic. In a statement released via their legal team, Royel Otis responded: 'This song is written from a specific perspective, it is not intended to convey a broader view or standpoint about women in general. We apologise if anyone understood those lyrics otherwise.' Royel Otis first formed in 2019, releasing a series of EPs between 2021 and 2023 before issuing their debut album, Pratts & Pain in 2024. Though their 'Sofa King' track reached No. 12 on the Alternative Airplay chart in 2023, the band found widespread fame last year following their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Murder on the Dancefloor' for Australian radio station triple j's Like a Version series. The cover topped the Alternative Airplay charts and also peaked at No. 41 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. The group's penchant for covers was again felt when their SiriusXM session rendition of The Cranberries' 'Linger' was released, giving them their first appearance on the Hot 100 when it reached No. 94. In late 2024, the duo picked up four ARIA Awards from eight nominations, including Best Group and Best Rock Album. Producer Chris Collins also won for Best Produced Release and Best Engineered Release for Pratts & Pain. Royel Otis are continuing their global ascent in 2025. Following a string of sold-out shows in New York City, Austin, and at home in Sydney, they're heading to Europe for a series of major shows, including an appearance at Glastonbury Festival on June 29. From there, they'll kick off their 'meet me in the car' headline tour across North America. In a recent Rolling Stone AU/NZ interview, the band spoke candidly about their creative process. 'We'll start working on some stuff in early January,' Pavlovic said. 'We've got a little bit of time away to just work on some music. I don't know how anyone has an actual schedule or a routine of how they write songs. We just work together, bounce ideas off each other.' 'It's always different,' Maddell added. 'It's like building a cake.' Royel Otis Issue Apology Following Allegations of Misogynistic Lyrics in New Single
Australian duo Royel Otis have issued an apology relating to the lyrics of their latest single, 'moody.' The single, which was released on May 9 as the first taste of their new era, was written by the pair (comprising Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic) alongside Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen. More from Billboard Demi Lovato Marries Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes in California Wearing Vivienne Westwood Wedding Gown Billy Ray Cyrus & Elizabeth Hurley Make Red Carpet Debut as a Couple Fans Choose MGK's 'Cliché' as This Week's Favorite New Music However, the track has reportedly attracted criticisms of misogyny, largely due to the chorus line which states, 'My girl's a b–h when she's moody.' In a press release issued alongside the song, Royel Otis remained relatively tight-lipped, simply noting 'It's a song about a girl,' in keeping with the text featured on the single's artwork. In a report from Australian outlet a former school friend of Pavlovic claimed the band were 'deleting [social media] comments that call out the lyrics and video, while only replying to the positive ones.' The friend added, 'In 2025, it's disheartening to hear a local Australian artist – someone I know or I knew – casually refer to women as 'b–hes' in their lyrics.' A statement received from the publication by Kay and Hughes Art and Entertainment Lawyers quoted the track's recent successes while downplaying the lyrical content present within. 'This song is written from a specific perspective, it is not intended to convey a broader view or standpoint about women in general,' Royel Otis said in the statement. 'We apologise if anyone understood those lyrics otherwise.' Royel Otis first formed in 2019, releasing a series of EPs between 2021 and 2023 before issuing their debut album, Pratts & Pain in 2024.
